Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

I'm really eager to play this. Watching the half-hour Treehouse stream, I intuitively sense this will be great. Samus' shooting and movement is so fast and fluid, it looks like a joy just to run and jump around blasting enemies. Those counters for critical hits are great, too — the dynamic camera really adds to the effect.

Agreed on all accounts. I really enjoyed watching the snappy traversal animations. The 3D effect in the eShop trailer seemed great too. If this runs and plays as smooth as it looks, it might end up becoming my portable GOTY. Definitely looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Hope they clean it up and bring it to switch later, would probably be more fun than prime for me.

I thought all work was going into the Switch. Now they're doing 3DS, Switch, Mobile -.-

I was like "huh, so that's why AM2R got C&D'ed" along with "I'm buying that". The Zeta fight looked a lot more interesting than the fan game was able to do, so I'm assuming the game as whole will be more varied.

You know, it just occurred to me: by the end of 2017 we'll have received revivals of both Fire Emblem Gaiden and Metroid II.

In the land of oddball black-sheep sequels, it should only be a matter of time before we see the glorious return of Zelda II.

... on the 3DS.

A Fusion sequel would mean Samus would need to fight against the Federation since she is wanted and knows their dirty secret.

Sounds cool tho so i hope that's the plan after Prime 4.

I'm so glad I avoided the Smash Samus Amiibo, oh I've been close to succumbing to it over the years even though I think it lacks punch but I thought "nah, Metroid will get a game soon and Nintendo's amiibo addiction will sort me out", and it actually happened!
The Metroid itself being one is just icing on the cake.

If this game ends up being at least good perhaps we could be sorted for a few more 2D Metroid titles in the future, come on Mercury Steam!

They didn't kill Castlevania. Lords of Shadow was one of the best selling in the series and a damn good game. Mirror of Fate was okay and LoS2 was brought down by some bone headed decisions by the lead director but still wasn't terrible and had a share of high points. There's a Netflix series coming next month and Konami has specifically name dropped it recently stating they know people want a new one and there could be one on Switch.

Even if you don't like LoS there have been a share of shitty Castlevania games before they even touched it.

I know I can always rely on you to backup the LoS not being a death knell narrative that some seem to almost want to be true.

Have you played the GBA Metroids? They're very fast.

I played them. But there's a difference between that and extreme action samus. Samus never had any twitch-reaction counter moves, or the ability to shoot enemies at arbitrary angles. By faster paced, I mean that this is moving towards more of a 'high-action', twitch reaction game, something like Megaman Zero, as opposed to previous Metroids.

Metroid II is my most played Metroid, very weird to be getting a crazy looking remake of a game I rarely even see considered worth anyone's time.

Wow! Still can't believe were getting a 2D and 3D Metroid! Its like the 1-2 punch combo of Fusion and Prime back in the GC days!

Kinda bummed out it's another reimagining of Metroid 2 (the other was AM2R)...the hunting the Metroids style of gameplay didn't click with me and unless its reworked in the remake to be more manageable...I'm not looking too forward to that aspect.

Don't mind the 2.5d graphics...and the new features in the game, especially the 360 degree aiming (perhaps made possible by the 2.5d graphics?) and melee attacking could be neat

A Fusion sequel would mean re-doing Other M or scrapping the latter entirely into the flames of Hell.

I'd prefer the latter.

Pretty sure one of the reasons we haven't gotten Metroid 5 yet is that nobody is sure how to make a Metroid game where Samus is a fucking enemy of the state.

The 3DS Castlevania by Mercury Steam played slow and clunky, so I'm not sure how I feel about the dev choice. I guess we'll see.

We're never getting a Fusion sequel are we.

That will probably depend on how well this sells. Sakamoto said he wasn't really interested in doing Metroid anymore after Other M. I'm sure he was very hurt by how it was received. But here he is again giving it another go. He had minimal involvement with the original Metroid II. But perhaps if this does well it might give him and Nintendo the confidence to proceed forward with classic 2D Metroid.

Gameplay details:
-2.5D graphics
-Based on Metroid II, you still have the Metroid counter
-Rather than the old rumbling earthquakes, there are Chozo gates where you place Metroid DNA obtained from killed Metroids to modify the world
-Free aiming of the beam rather than being locked to angles (audio cue and highlight when pointed at enemy)
-Pickups now automatically pulled in without charge beam
-A melee move that can be used to counter and stun enemies that get too close to you or charge you, boss fights have QTE counters and finishers

-Beam switching (power and ice shown)
-Place colored pins on the map
-Fast travel points known as teleport stations
-"Aeion abilities," powers that have to be replenished with pickups similar to health and missiles
-One example is a pulse that outlines unexplored parts of map in a 10x10 grid around you and will highlight things like bombable blocks on the current screen
-Another is a shield that powers up your melee and absorbs damage in exchange for draining your Aeion meter

Oh lord, it's as I feared: They're turning this into a straight-up spectacle action game! We even have super moves now.

Oh god in particular at that one 'Aeion ability'. Unless they're adding in randomly generated levels, radar-ing a 10x10 square on the map is going to trivialize a lot of the exploration and discovery aspect of the game.

People asking for Switch ports in every 3DS game thread is so bizarre, it's like asking for PS1 games to be ported to PS3 lol. You guys realize the tech jump 3DS -> Switch is? We're talking about 240p games that need to be optimized to be rendered twice for 3D.

The only other option would be a Smash 4 approach of dual release which I'm sure they only bothered with because it was Smash. It's kind of a titanic task.

Yeah, the setup is there so if executed nicely, the next Metroid game will be amazing.

I am not getting my hopes up for this one. Didn't like what MS did with Castlevania, and the game looks like it taking too much inspiration from Other M. But I'm glad this is a remake of M2 instead of a new game. And for what it is it looks sort of promising. Visually looks kind of bad, but I think all hope of a Metroid with 2D art died a long time ago. Glad to see Nintendo is still sort of trying with Metroid.

Under the same comparison, would it not be unreasonable for folks to be upset that a new title from a beloved Sony IP was getting a release on PS1 rather than than the PS3, 6 months after it released?

I'm well-aware of that, and am stating they should have taken the necessary development-related steps for it to be a dual release.

That's a pretty big ask. Resources are finite. And there are still a metric shit ton of 3DS' out in the wild, so it does make some fiscal sense for Nintendo to throw that audience a bone with what, relatively speaking, is a lower budget title than what would be required on Switch.

then dont use the radar thing. Seems easy to me lol

Am2r is excellent, it will be interesting to see how this measures up.

I honestly hope it lights a fire under them, if they are bested by the fan project they should probably hang up their boots.

one of the first things they pointed out in the treehouse thing about it is that it's optional

Instead of overreacting, how about you sit down ya ass and watch the 30 minutes plus of gameplay they revealed?

Then don't use it? It's like complaining about the steering assist in MK8D

Via emulation, yes. It's really different from what people are asking here.

I mean, I totally get people being disappointed, but asking for ports or dual releases is just weird considering how different both platforms are. This game has allegedly been stuck in development for some time, probably before the Switch was even finalized, so it makes lots of sense for it to not be on Switch. Now if they were announcing that it's in development for 3DS I'd understand.

Also a more apt comparison would be a PS3 title being announced after the PS4's release, which has happened and makes sense because install bases and all that.
