Rocket League on Switch targeting 720p 60fps. PS4 crossplay a "political barrier".

Whew, lots of interesting stuff in here.

The goal for the Switch version of Rocket League is to have it feel like it does on every other platform. Developer Psyonix is hoping to get the game running at 60 fps in both the Switch's docked and undocked mode, running at 720p. The performance of the game, the developer argues, is more important than pure visual fidelity.

They also want every player on every platform to be able to play against each other. And right now the only company keeping that from happening is Sony. So what's holding it up?

”The honest answer is PlayStation has not yet granted us permission," Jeremy Dunham, VP of publishing at Psyonix, told Polygon. ”We are hopeful that being able to play cross network is still something we can go for, we think we've been big champions of this for the last two years trying to get people behind the idea ... we believe it's the future of the industry, and we're hopeful that maybe the community and the media can actually help get around the idea of pushing it forward and doing what we can to make it reality. It's our dream."

They're trying to make it as easy on players and the platform holders as possible. ”We run all the servers," Dunham stated. ”The way that it works is we connect everyone through our own system, we handle everything ourselves." So far Microsoft had the highest and ”most complex" requirements for security, so meeting those barriers made it easier to deal with the requirements of the other platforms. The hard work has been done.

So why would Sony tell them no?

”I wish I had the answer to that," Dunham said. ”The only thing that we know is that we can't do it yet. I can tell you this: From Psyonix, we would do whatever we would need to do to make it possible to be cross-network play with all the other platforms and PlayStation 4. They just need to tell us what that is."

He's hoping the PlayStation community is loud enough about wanting this to happen that Sony decides to let it happen. Cross-platform play, including the PlayStation 4, could happen today if Sony told them they could do it.

”It's literally something we could do with a push of a button, metaphorically," Dunham told Polygon. ”In reality it's a web page with a checkbox on it. All we have to do is check that box and it would be up and running in less than an hour all over the world. That's all we need to do."
”Technically it's possible," Dunham said. ”There are no technical limitations. Right now it's just a political barrier we need to help figure out how to crack."

As someone who is generally a big supporter of Sony platforms, I say these devs and more should hold Sony's feet to the fire until this changes. Even the "business" arguments don't hold water because they are preventing major quality-of-life types of features on their systems.

Really glad to hear their priority on framerate over resolution and visual "flash", Rocket League is definitely a game where smooth and clear gameplay is most important.

Never played Rocket League before. Good to hear we are getting a solid port, and at least will be able to play with most other platforms on Switch!

Tick that box, Sony.

Played this a lot at a friends house but never made the dive. Will definitely buy if its 20 bucks with cross play and 720p/60fps. I'm assuming you can play with bots offline?

Unsure why people want PS4 crossplay in this. It's not like you can party up with people on different platforms, right? The Switch version will probably have a decent amount of people playing online when you add in the Xbone and PC crossplay.

faster matchmaking, more players at any hour of the day for you to lose against.

Honestly, a game like Rocket League can probably hit 1080p 60fps in the hands of a more experienced developer. Not saying Psyonix is lazy or anything, but that graphics aren't that impressive in Rocket League.

Maybe if they hired Shin'en to do the port, they could hit 1080p 60fps.

Yeah, there's season mode vs bots along with just firing up a game vs bots.

Unsure why anyone would not want crossplay for all platforms? What is your reasoning behind it?

Why would people not want it?

maybe sony isn't too pleased after they paid for it to be a ps+ game and they implemented embarassingly useless crossplay between pc and ps4 back in the day?

That's actually tragic.
I won't stop complaining, you can count on me!

That also throws the "Security Risk" for lack of PSN crossplay out the window.

What would it be undocked :/

That's seems kinda low tbh, no 900p docked 720p undocked for rocket league? Shit becomes hard to see across the pitch with the way the camera is and how the stages have grid designs.

Actually now that I read it again, it might mean that undocked is 720p. I think it means 720p in both though.

I do wish the wording was clearer.

I do wonder if Sony are beginning to get annoyed with these guys, and if that will affect any future business between them and Sony.

Enjoy your competitive advantage Sony lmao

I'll be playing this, Minecraft, and more to come exclusively on my Switch even though I own a PS4.

And YES you can cross play with friends. People really need to stop spreading that misinformation.

Even if that were true, how does it benefit anyone to hold a grudge like that?

The higher the population a game has, the quicker you potentially find matches and the more reliably matchmaking would work.

Shit ain't rocket science.

The cross-play is the same now as it was then — for all platforms. Nothing has changed in that regard.

to be devils advocate for a moment, Sony is currently the lead Console Provider this gen. Why should they let their rivals get in on their platform and benefit of its size and support by allowing other consoles to play with their players?

Sounds shit but I bet they have made that argument somewhere.

Everyone knows that. That's not some super secret business secret you just unveiled to the world.

It still sucks and people have to call Sony out for it.

It's popular on PC too, Switch can cross-play with that and X1 so it isn't a huge problem.

Though I think Sony allow cross-play with Xbox and PC in rocket league :S Boxing out the switch here seems a tad weird.

Because it benefits their fans, and their fans are the ones suffering by their decision. Between all the other communities, they don't need PS4 to have lots of matches. ps4 owners are missing out more than non owners, imo.

Nah, just the PC. No crossplay between PS4 and Xbone has been a point of contention for a long time.

Isn't Panic Button doing the Switch port? That logo cropped up at the end of the trailer, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in discussion.

Fuck sake, bottom of the page

Not sure why docked couldn't be at least 900p if undocked is 720p, but 60fps is definitely most important.

Also, lol sony.
