I've been watching some of this Invitational stuff that Nintendo is hosting for Splatoon, Pokken and ARMS. Nintendo hired this dude that's hosting and commentating all three tournaments, Jordan Kent. https://twitter.com/jordanrkent, a person who already working as a host for the Portland Trailerblazer pre game show, and all around host for the Oregon Ducks. And a former College Football and NFL player.

I guess this is the future of eSports, at least when companies feel like they need to spend the money. Hire already professional talent that can adapt to commentating the game instead of relying on solely grassroots commentators who may not have the skills and demeanor to handle being professional all the time on screen.

I mean, you can hire Smash commentators who are trying to unionize, or this guy.

That splatoon tourney actually turned out super well and the commentary was definitely a big part of that. Surprised at how much I enjoyed it

Any good impressions on either DBZ or MvCi?

DBZ:

*Pretty much everyone seems to love it. Mix of GG and Marvel with a dash of Arcana Heart thrown in. Stuff just flows very well into each other and is surprisingly easy to pick up (though this is coming from people who have been playing FGs for decades). Fast, fluid and fun. Over the top cinematic, nice little touches around and looks great. No complaints around the internet for it, people are all aboard the hype train especially FG vets. Controls are great, game has a burst system, no incoming, throws are forward + H, LMHS control scheme, no dragon punch motions, you can use 2 assists at one time, it has DHCs (but you are limited to a specific super with your partner character), comeback mechanic is toned down, lots of GG-esque stuff like getting meter from dashing forward etc.

Heavy usually does a wall bounce so you use RT which is the homing dash to follow up into an air combo. Seems like it's pretty intuitive and people are already getting the hang of it.

Don't know what else to say, most people are pretty high up on it.

Marvel Infinite:

*Most people seem to agree that it at least is fun and has most of the Marvel DNA. It's fast, chaotic, hectic and best of all it's very open ended because of the tag system and will lead to creative/broken stuff.

A lot of the issues with the game come from 3 things:

*Input leniency which is resulting in a lot of cluminess/sloppyness in the game. It's very easy to do a super jump tri dash and get a random air super instead. We are talking about players with super clean execution like RayRay here, not someone like me with bad execution although even I could tell something was off about the input leniency.

*Dashing is more limiting now. You can't really do dash forward into dash back which hurts the classic Marvel "footsies". Furthermore, wave dashing/pllink dashing is nerfed because you have to wait a few frames before you can dash again otherwise you just stay in place. In most cases it really is better to just do a regular dash as it goes about the same distance in the same time like Captain America. You still have fly into plink dashes but there is some jank to it with some of the restrictions in place.

*The Tag system leads to a lot of scramble/"random" situations. The Tag system can be used at any time with a very low cooldown meaning you can always just throw something out and then Tag to make it safe and do mix ups/pressure. So a lot of the game feels very scrambly because of it but I personally think this is a new system that needs adjusting to and I think because the point character stays on screen for so long, incessant tagging can get punished easily into big happy birthdays. Tag system is a double edged sword, it leads to a lot of crazy, creative open ended stuff that Marvel is known for but also doubles down on the scramble/random situations that pro players don't like.

I have been following both games closely so you can ask specific questions. I also have the story demo for Marvel Infinite if you want to have certain things tested though I do have work until like 8 so I can't check it until I get home.

That's the one part that I didn't expect. It's like ASW was like, how can we put this element of Arcana in it and make it work.

I've been saying for AWHILE how much homing dashes and DBZ would go together. I was thrilled it made it in. Now I'm seeing Stones in Marvel essentially trying to be Arcanas and what do I see so far...the actual arcana moves and abilities cloned lol. Glad this shit finally made it into some mainstream games. Nobody was given AH enough attention to try this shit. Maybe now they will get to enjoy some of what they inspired one way or another..

Yay Counter Switching for 2 bars. We TVC now. No megacrash blowback. You just pop below them so dont get airdashed on and overheaded.
EDIT: Oh shit KOF hops are in!

Okay every button in MVCI during Reality stone Infinity Storm does an extra elemental attack and its one at a time only...unless you tag in. Then you can summon a beam tag and go with a low for the ground ice and have both simultaneously. This is probably the best Storm I've seen out of a stone so far. Pushblocking projectiles back and forth is all kinds of Athena mirror match nonsense lol. Reminds me of my KOF 11 Oswald matches :)

The thing with that is. If only a small amount of players took the time to learn how to do it because of working at it then leave it in. It becomes irrelevant to casuals (outside of playing online? But it's a fighting game so of course there will be Hella good players online).

The casuals don't even know it exists and the people who practice and work at it can push the characters further.

This was seriously one of the best things about Marvel 3, too.

Remember how wave-dashing was actually kind of strict in Marvel 2? You really had to hit the buttons at the same time in order to get it, else you'd just flub and get a normal instead. So in Marvel 3 they added some timing leniency to make dashing easier. You could press the buttons with slightly looser timing and you'd just cancel the normal into a dash, making wave-dashing way easier.

But the side effect of that leniency was that you could just skip the crouch-cancel altogether and plink for even more efficient movement if you were consistent with the timing.

That's some "accessibility" that I can get behind: make the standard techniques easier while also adding a reward for those who put in some work. Both low-level and high-level players get to feel a little more stylish as a result.

And I fucking suck at plink dashing.

Quick summary of the MVCI stream for folks who missed it to use as clif notes later. Correct me if I got anything wrong.
  • -Okay so combo breakers exist now. Just like TVC you can spend 2 bars and hit the tag button and they'll keep combo-ing your first dude but you'll tag in on the ground as your other guy so you can break it up. No burst to knock em away.
  • -They Also added KOF hops, super hops, and the ability to negate vertical movement on a jump so you can short jump. Thats good stuff so folks dont ALWAYS know where to protect the air or where you'll land like in god awful street fighter or something.
  • -Plinks and wave dashing be gone. 8 way air dash is in for Nova and Cap. Marvel. It looked like some backwards plink dashing was still in though.
  • -You can use infinity storm to cancel blockstun like xfactor canceling to punish stuff. You can double tap to activate lvl 3 and blow the entire gauge instantly if you got the bar. Counter lvl 3? OUCH.
  • -Reality Stone is LITERALLY the Love Arcana's love ball homing attack. You can call it tag and call a second one to have two. The infinity storm for it makes it so every attack button also summons a different elemental attack like a fire beam, wind shots, low ice or lightning overhead. Only one at a time though but like the balls you do an attack and tag into another you can have two for shenanigans.
  • -Pushblock can be used to reflect projectiles. Theres no limit I think..they just bounce faster back and forth till one of you blows it so its like Athena or Oswald reflects in KOF.
  • -Captain America got a new shield counter move that causes crumples on the ground or launchers if it counters air folk. He also has a run move .
  • -Nova can do magneto air dashing, and his moves are all air okay now. Dude is super good now. He's the new Magneto.
  • -Captain Marvel has flight, drill attacks, floaty stuff, command grabs, and the ability to absorb infinity stone projectiles and some other stuff so she can dash straight through some attacks. They say she's like the new Storm.
  • -Hulk can now wall jump horizontally and its fast. May have a wall cling.
  • -Thanos has teleports, armored attacks, eye lasers, big damage...looks dope.
  • -Dante's bold cancels changed. You do an attack and you can cancel it up to 3 times by hitting that attack button again at the right points to change which attack it is. He also got air guns
  • -Anyone can simply do an overhead and tag in with a low normal for a mixup. All tags come in on the ground for high lows too.
  • -Ultron has a beam thats horizontal on light but on heavy he aims his hands in an X pattern to catch jumpers. He has some sick hit grabs that cause bounces and neat air to ground combos. He's gonna be good.

Sounds like the MSH version.

Fixing the bad faces is a lot less work than what KoF had to do to look like a current gen game(changing engine basically). Capcom didn't care about Ken's face, but the backlash now seem much stronger.
Do you think they'll fix chuns walking animation too? Cammy's SFV air throw is still there.

Most of this stuff we knew from the demo that was released.

Also Dante still has bold cancel and it is mapped to two kicks. What you are referring to is crazy combos where you would mash a button and a different move would come out. They just altered that, not bold cancels.

Plink and wave dashing isn't gone, it's still present in the demo. It's just clunkier especially wave dashing. You can still do fly into plink dashing around with someone like Thor, it's actually pretty fast.

https://clips.twitch.tv/DeterminedAlluringAlbatrossPrimeMe

It should also be noted that this game has Skullgirl's unblockable protection system meaning you can't be hit by a high/low on the same frame.

There's no real comeback mechanic in the game aside from the DBZ meter charge when you are done a character. So both games used a similar comeback mechanic though Marvel still has the infinity stones which technically count as a comeback because they fill up as you take damage. You just don't have to be down a character to use it.

Thanks for the assist here.

I dig the reflects. I'd like to see them try it on multihitting beams.

It doesn't work on beams, you can try it in the demos against those jobber bots.

I THINK it negates out some of the beam damage because it's like a partial reflect.
