By my count, he has said this is three different places: Eurogamer, Verge, and GameSpot.

He is intentionally trying to rile people up. What happened to Good Guy Phil?

This is almost as if a system coming out more than a year later at $100 more was supposed to be more powerful... ;). Given the circumstances, Xbox Scorpio performance and target HW is part for the course. It is good, but a year of extra R&D and a much higher retail price make it expected not OMG cannot believe how powerful it is.

C'mon, you got to give the warriors "something" to brag about. It's not like they can use those percentages on the tremendous amounts of exclusives MS talked about at E3 this year.

Not a good look but if they want to try that angle have at it: I expect it to hurt more than help though.

If X1X sells less than Pro he's really going to regret these quotes though: I can already image Fake Kaz twitter comments.

Racing games aren't possibly the best benchmark. Isn't Gran Turismo also currently doing this?
PS Sport was touted as doing 4K 60 with checkerboard last I remember:

Yes, this is all true, and I agree, it's power is commensurate with this years tech etc, but I don't think this is what is being argue'd..

Phil is a tool for saying PS4 Pro is competing with XB1S, it clearly isn't, but as mentioned it's still that next tier up no matter which way you cut it..

yeah his wording is dumb as fuck. It should be pretty clear to everyone that each brand has a base model and a 4k model and thats all that matters to most people out there. Only the people really into their gaming will even be looking much deeper than that. And even then the better specs will only matter so much. When Pro can put out stuff like horizon that looks amazing and 4k CB looks close enough to native 4k that most people wont see the difference that additional power speak wont move many units in the grand scheme of things.

They would be more wise to say it is competing with the Pro and tell you why its so much better. Would still make little difference really without the games. With out the reasons to buy the system in the first place (exclusives) then tech specs and resolutions dont even really matter.

By the looks of it neither side has really set the world on fire with exclusives this E3 but People looking to by a system from scratch and want 4k will look at the current library of exclusives, price and what their friends play. What your friends play can often mean you ignore all other points so those people dont even need to know more beyond that. Price and exclusives I think both are clearly better currently on Sonys side.

I really want MS to step up their game on the game side. Its been pretty dissapoitning as of late. they did so well last gen. There has been to much pinning their hopes on those old franchises for my tastes and not enough new stuff that is really shining.

Because MS on a marketing point of view is pushing for TRUE 4k. They basically need 4x the power of the OG XBOX One just for increasing the resolution from a 1080p game, and consequently don't have that much leftovers to increase the details per pixel you'd like to see to blow the competition away.

Good point, so why are they making it out to be a night and day difference between the Ox and the Pro when the proof (so far) isn't in the pudding?. They act like its a generational sized difference but they showed nothing to back it up.

I agree, but then he has to persuade people why Xbox one x is worth maybe $150 more than pro (if pro gets a price cut) and that is difficult to do. He's trying to position the x1x as its own thing but that is silly to even try

The funny thing here is that as far as "arrogant MS" goes, they weren't this er... confident about power... even back when their hardware relative to competitors actually had the gap that 1X has to 1S.

Which just made me realize that original XBox was the most powerful console on the market for full 4 years, with what as far I can recall was the largest gap in a generation.
If it weren't for last gen anomaly(which had the smallest gap I can remember), it'd be the longest too.

I always imagine how Phil Spencer and Mark Cerny hang out at a bar after E3 and laugh together about all these threads. Kind of like wrestling. #itsstillrealtome

Show me a game that looks as good as Horizon.

Let me tell you something...I can guarantee that by the end of this generation, best looking and most technically advanced games on any console will be Sony first party games (GoW, TLoU, Horizon..etc) ... Also people here are really exaggerating X power, Difference with Pro will be Native vs checkerboard period.

If MS had a studio that was renown for graphics other than turn 10 then maybe, but who ?

I doubt that most games on the XB1X will even be native 4k.

I reckon we'll see 1440p checkerboarded to 4k on Pro and 1800p checkerboarded to 4k on Scorpio for most games.

Which would render Phil's comments here even more ridiculous.

I think about this too. I imagine Phil and his team cracking up how insanely angry people get over his throwaway comment's. "Phil will pay for that quote on social media!"

"He can't keep getting away with this!"

I really can't believe these guys would try to trick us into buying a $499 console. Anybody wondering why the Metro footage looked so good? The same old "rendered in engine" trick that Sony and EA always use. It was prerendered target video "running in engine" and not running on the Xbox One X. This is Killzone all over again. How lame is that?

Phil seems incredibly short sighted with these jabs at checkerboarding competitors when we know a ton of the X games are using that method now instead of native 4k...

It's freaking astonishing how fast they change their tune once they have something to gloat about.

Yep , it's all about business since they're are business, not that "all we are friendly" competitors.

MS /Phils knows that if XboneX fails , will be very difficult to explain to shareholders the reasons. XboneX is a nice hardware but videogames is about videoGAMES and not just hardware and Nintendo proves that every generation sin pace Cube.

Phils main problem is that a second or third place is not enough for shareholders while for Sony or Nintendo it even works.

Phil changed tone because surely he promised to MS return to 1st place or at least a competitive place near Sony. But the problem is that nice hardware needs nice software and MS does not has games that can compete now against Sony and Nintendo IPs.

He is under pressure but doing some bad choices these days, it seems those friendly tweets are gone....

He is right.

I really wish Sony would have made the Pro better, because I don't give a shit about the games on Xbox One.

If you are going to make a high end product, do it.

No he is not right, he is saying that the OX is a true 4K system when its not. Not all games will be 4K native on it (same as the Pro) so he is factually lying.

You mean just like when Sony said all the games would be 1080p on PS4? They all do it and they all mean that mostly the games will hit that resolution.

Sony also said games would be 1080p on ps3. When someone says something disingenuous, it's hard to tell what they really mean because their words mean nothing.

Just thought I'd pop back in to this thread as I've read a few other threads and this one seems a better place to go over this.

I'd ask people this:

You have 2 consoles (PS4P and X1X),

The PS4P is marketed with 4K (Dynamic) etc etc

You then are about to launch an X1X, which is has the following extra 'resource' available over the PS4P:
50% more GPU TFlops
50% more RAM
50% more RAM Bandwidth
10%+ more CPU
Further cusomisations to GPU + CPU for some 'not easily quantified' improvements
UHD Blu-ray player

Now reading several threads, I see quite a few statements with the following logic:
- The PS4P has some games with compromised non-native 4K rendering, the X1X has some games with compromised non-native 4K rendering therefor the two are identical and further to that, one is $100 more than the other so poor VFM.

I would marginally defend Phil on this one and say that he is justified to get the point across that EVERYTHING ELSE BEING EQUAL, the X1X is much more capable of harnessing major aspects of 4K gaming more than any other console (by an appreciable margin)..

Still, I can't bring myself to really defend any BS marketing, including the act of making "4K" a prominant number of any console in their marketing blurb when there is so so so so much more to IQ than resolution.

I am interested in seeing screens. So far what Sony showed looked better than forza, rares game and crackdown.

A lot of third party stuff was looking better too.

Seems at this power level it takes talent and man power to pull it off and more power doesn't seem to equate to an overall better looking game.

Atleast that's what I felt during thier conference

as is the case any other time. look at ryse at the xbox one's launch. arguable a better looking game than anything on the PS4 at that time despite being 900p and running like a bag of spanners.

i've said it elsewhere, but i imagine games like god of war will be a more impressive graphical benchmark in faux-K than anything that releases on the new xbox in "true 4k" (which apparently means checkerboarding and dynamic resolutions anyway). because ultimately resolution isn't the be all/end all of great looking games. it's just an element of it. and in terms of studios who push graphics regardless of technology...well sony seems to own them all

Damn, I wouldn't want to touch Spencer's skin with desperation and insecurity leaking out of every pore like that. Somebody's shook that their console costs $100 more and has a noticeably inferior library of exclusives, all while looking (at best) marginally better than the competition.

(Please, call me a Sony fanboy. I've never owned a single Playstation product.)

It was interesting to hear god of war was base ps4 too and looked good.

Probably need a tv to notice but I think many games won't look better than s and four base games just cause they lack development ability.

Phil has everywhere recently. This guy will say anything to get people think "I'm your good buddy" and spend $500 on his new console. lie and spin, that's what he's really good at.

This makes no sense. He's been saying over and over. One X is a premium product, it will sell fewer than the S. It's there for those types that bought an elite controller, buy expensive graphics cards, have Dolby Atmos systems, buy 4k TVs, etc. The One X seems more like them having the ability to simply say they have the most powerful system.

I feel like people forget that at the end of the day this is a guy doing his job. What is he suppose to say? What is he supposed to do? He's not here to walk on egg shells cause it might hurt some fanboys feelings. I think it's simple, he's out there to push his product and these quotes will end up in some news paper or some magazine. Some random casuals will read it and say "hmm, that Xbox has the best specs. It must be the best out of the 3 and call of duty looks really good". That's all this is. Also, he works on this stuff every day. He may totally be drinking the cool aid. For all u know he actually really feels that the hardware in the Xb1X puts it in a leaugue of its own. Disagree with the guy, but don't attack him personally. U don't really know how secure or insecure he actually is. I'm willing to bet he makes a pretty good salary and has a pretty good life.
