Manga News/Discussion |OTD| Oh, you're reading manga? How cute...

UQ Holder needs to ditch the romance so it can be good again, its lost what I really loved about the series.

I am glad the chapter remembered that Santa kun still exist, he even said nii chan.

What it really needs to ditch is the lewdness. It was refreshing that an Akamatsu manga was relatively light in that category and instead had good old fashioned knockdown drag out fights in their place.

I'd recomend Pandora Hearts mostly because it is a finished series and i remember a time i used to really love it. Though its been a really long time since ive gone back to it, so i cant guarantee it holds up to my nostalgia.

Psyren is great. Sadly it got axed, but it still managed to wrap itself up rather decently.
I remember liking Pandora Hearts too, but I don't think I ever finished it? Lol. Should probably rectify this.

She sure has a wild imagination.

Vinsmokes still ain't shit, but admittedly their Super Sentai Germa 66 transformation was a little hype. Are they really gonna save the crew here though? Which is what it's looking like since, well, I don't really know how else Bege holds his ground now that Big Mom has come back to her senses. Not sure if I'd like that, but w/e.

The bad guys using the power of friendship and promptly getting stomped out is sort of funny. This Suneater story has been pretty decent.

Psyren got lucky and was already closing up when it got canned. As a result all they lost was a few chapters of training and a handful of final fights in the past.

Billy Bat 165 (END)

This was an extremely underwhelming ending.
After all the escalation during the series the ending is basically an unrelated short story to the rest of the manga with a small message of hope.

There's never any real explanation about Billy Bat as a character, and while I'm not one to think that everything needs explaining, answering the questions asked through out the entire manga would be the minimum the author could had done.
It doesn't help that all character basically got a "and they died of old age" conclusion.
Though at least Kevin Goodman had some kind of conclusion to his arc, unlike the entire majority of the cast.

I'd also like to point out what terrible of a character Timmy was, there was no build up to him becoming evil, his motivations are dubious, and it was never explained how he predicted 9/11 without being able to see Billy.
Really would had worked a lot better if he could see Billy but only the black one, then his character evolution would had been justified. Instead he just turns evil simply because the series needed an antagonist.

The series was overall a mess, a fun mess at times, but an aimless mess that kept going through the same story beats until it reaches it's low key conclusion.

It's a mystery series that strings you along with questions that will never be answered.

Delicous In Dungeon 1

Does this get better? This first chapter was boring as shit. The only clever moment was when the two other characters tried to remember the past few monsters they fought and how they looked "delicious" and that just got a mild smile. Besides that it was the worst parts of shokugeki no soma (the vomit of cooking exposition) but with fictional monster food. Is this supposed to be a comedy series? It's not funny.

In the End Homura Comforts Madoka in the Nude (SFW short)
I can totally empathise with Madoka's feelings here. It's important to make sure your loved ones eat healthily, which is why I never give them any of my cooking. Ochikano showed that Homura does have some culinary talent, she just needs the right motivation, i.e. her waifu. Besides, her 'unhealthiness' is part of her devilish charm. Title was accurate, 10/Zweizer.

Murenase Shiiton Gakuen 28.5

Astra Lost In Space 34

So there were 2 things I took away from this chapter in regards to the theories on who the traitor/saboteur on the ship is
or if there is one at this point
, but before that I wanted to talk about how all the unsettling flashbacks about the kids being mistreated and unloved had not only been put into full uncomfortable and cruel context, but we had some additional insight into how twisted (and, frankly, evil) the
Originators
true intentions and designs were.

It's hard figuring out what was the most evil thing they were talking about in that meeting. In general, this is a sit down of parents/guardians that had conspired at least twice to
murder of teenagers they are meant to be protecting. But we get to how nonchalant they are about the horrific manner they let their ''kids'' die, by just sending them to space where they could die via space exposure (which, by the by, is not a pleasant manner of dying whatsoever)

The part where they saw their clones as tools through and through, to the point where Rei, Joe and Olive raised them only to make sure that they grow up in the way they see fit, and had at no point even grown attached was disturbing. On top of it, I can't decide who was more stone hearted between Joe and Rei who raised their copies themselves but never loved them, or Olive who not only grown a second clone of herself for some organs, but also went a step further and made sure that the maids were to raise her clone so that there would be 0 chances she grew to love her as a daughter.

But then we get to how Genma and Olive talk about Luca. It hit hard especially with Luca realising that he's
inter-sex
caused such a life altering result for him, to the point that during his arc he had been so unsure about what his identity is or whether or not he liked men or women.

When we learn this chapter that not only was him being born
inter-sex deliberate, but on the part of his Originals whims and on the doctor in charge just taking it like it was a eccentric request. Like what the fuck.
It just drove home how from the kids view point how much those decision the adults made for them before they were even born had affected them on a fundamental level, but the adults couldn't even spare a single thought of compassion throughout this entire ordeal
or had placed fail switches so that they never get attached.

The second part of the chapter was nice in how it didn't let the crew fall into depression about it (although I feel it isn't over for them trying to grapple with this revelation on an emotional level, but it isn't going to stop them from getting back) and was a nice way of showcasing how able Kanata is as a captain. I will also give Shinohara points for showing the sudden transition from the crew being at first shocked and numb to the news to completely breaking down crying over understanding
that their parent/Originators never loved them, and never planned to love them.

----

With that done, theory time, which I'm sure BassForever is going to have some thoughts on it with the stuff we got from this chapter.

So the first thing in regard to the traitor/saboteur is that if there is one at this stage,
it wasn't placed on the ship by any of the Originators we had been introduced to thus far, and in fact, the ship was not part of the plan at all.

From what we got in this chapter, the plan after the passing of the law was to completely get rid of the clones via space exposure some light years away from earth, so that the bodies are never found and evidence of the crime is disposed. The Clones being alive after being transported was not part of the plan, in fact it seems the plan didn't get past anything outside of sending them to space to die away from anyone who can see them bite it.

I guess this puts a kibosh on the whole Aries-is-secretly-an-android-trained/programed-to-keep-watch-over-the-crew, because it wouldn't make any sense to have an android in this murder plan, or to have it watch over a bunch of corpses after the teleportation is complete.

Now could Aries still be an android? Sure, I actually think it might still be likely, but not because of anything the Originators we seen in this chapter did and everything to do with whoever commissioned for Aries' creation.

This is the second thing I took in regards to theories, and where I need to look into the relationships between the crew and their guardians:

Currently, we have

Ulgar – clone of Gert
Yun Hua – clone of Wei Lu/Lucy Lum
Zack - clone of Joe
Kanata - clone of Rei
Quitterie – clone of Olive
Funicia – second clone of Olive
Luca – clone of Felice, grew up with Marco Esposito
Charce – clone of Vixian noble supposedly, grew up with his ''mother'' Sofie
Aries - adoptive daughter of Emma, the original is still unknown

All the originals for 7 out of the 9 clones are accounted for, with the exception for Charce (who we know is a clone of a Vixian noble from this chapter, and having meet the women who is his ''mother'') and Aries, who's mother Emma doesn't know that she is a clone and actually loves her and never wanted her to disappear the way she did.

Given the fact that neither Sofie or Emma were in this meeting, we can assume that they have nothing to do with the conspiracy. Or at least, Emma doesn't, Sofie might based on the theory I have.

My new theory is this:
the saboteur is actually Charce. But he had not attempted to kill the crew in accordance with the Originators conspiracy, but because after learning of their plans to dispose of the clones, he went rouge and attempted to save Aries, who I am going to make the call is in fact Sayla's clone.

Here's what I think:
the clone!Charce we have on the Astra right now is in actuality the original!Charce (or whatever the Vixian noble's real name is) having preformed the memory transfer in secret via underground/criminal scientists who are involved in clone research, and to add to it, this Vixian noble is also the one who contacted Olive to make a clone of himself (Charce) and a clone of Sayla (Aries).

The story Charce had told the crew was, for the first part, completely true. Its just that part about meeting with Sayla, repelling against his society and whatnot were his original's life, possibly decades ago.

The bits were he goes into how he went on to live with his mother and study aboard isn't the reality, or at least, not to original!Charce. Sofie Lacroix was the person hired/paid by original!Charce to take care of clone!Charce, while Emma Spring was sought out to take care of Sayla's clone in a more loving environment because original!Charce couldn't stand to have even a clone of the girl he loved be mistreated.

The moment he realised that the rest of his co-conspirators were about to kill the clone he prepared for the women he loves, he went on his own rouge plans and took the risk with mind-transferring with clone!Charce, and prepared the Astra on location where the crew is teleported.

This explains why they found the Astra where they did, and also where the second sphere appearing where it did when it chased them. ''Charce'' did try to get the rest of the clones, other than himself and Aries, and then take her back with him once it was all said and done. But since all his attempts failed, and Aries giving ''the traitor might be trying to help us stay alive'' speech made him have, while I won't call a change of heart, second thoughts on killing the crew.

This all comes to ahead on the chapter where he talks about Sayla. He laments in his own thoughts about how despite sacrificing everything to get where he was, he still found a new family to belong to. And then in private, apologise to Sayla for not going through with his plans.

I'll say this might very well be wrong and Aries ends up turning into the
T-1000 little sister
, but I feel that is the direction the series is going with regards to
Charce and why he is so fixated on Aries, along with us never seeing either Charce's or Aries' originals or why Aries and Sayla share so many similarities.

Series continues being pretty cool, looking forward to see what they have in store for the other big mystery of the series now as well.

Billy Bat ended up being the worst Urasawa work, despite it having some of his better writing early on. Went off the rails over time onto just topical point after topical point without any relevancy to the previous point.

I think that the manga's biggest sin is that it kept on adding to the mystery part while giving a twist escalating the series ties to human history, to the point in the end where he goes on to say ''Billy Bat is the grand narrative of the entirety of humanities existence'' without actually giving anything meaningful to the prevalent themes in the series.

It's a shame too, since I really liked it early on. But the final chapter was weak nonsense.

I really liked Rengoku's brief journey with the cast as the mentor/older authority figure. KnY always surprises me with how it manages to make me like the cast quickly after it introduces them. I thought I wouldn't be able to stand Rengoku when he was first talking, but now I feel sad over the way he is going.

Honestly your theory is so air tight it's hard to think it's incorrect. My only real issue is
I feel charce being the traitor is too obvious, especially after he explained his flash back. It'd why I initially guessed Aries since she was the character least likely to ever be suspected. Even now when nobody knows why Aries is different nobody has thought bubbles or stated "could she be the traitor". Compare this to how the series handled the plot around Charce explaining his flash back, tons of red herring cliff hangers to make him look suspicious and people accusing him of lying/hiding from them leading up to zach outright saying "this makes you look like the assassin". Perhaps Charce is keeping something from the group, the fact he knows Aries is the traitor. It could be his love for the original girl has made him bite his tounge or withhold information that if revealed would remove all doubt.

I have more I want to say, but this has kept me up over an hour already and I have work early tomorrow lol.

I mean I love shokugeki no soma, and I can tolerate the cooking garble there since

1) it's real cooking garble
2) I liked the characters instantly
3) the series focused on cooking in a competitive sense

Most of did's first chapter was focused just on "how do we cook this mushroom/scorpion". I don't think any of our main protagonist were well established outside of ladros having stereotypical "I wanna save my imouto".

That's fine, take your time in thinking about it!

What I think is
that while the points are forming the picture on the motivation and reason why ''Charce'' did what he did, and is most likely the traitor/saboteur on the ship, I do think that when Aries said that the traitor is still trying to get home made him change his mind and he is no longer actively trying to get the crew killed at this point. If anything, him thinking on his family being the clones means he already changed his mind.

The point of contention will be that the Vixian noble decided to go through and erase Charce's memories to start of with. As point out in this chapter, he killed clone!Charce so he could join the crew so he could potentially kidnap Aries, maybe mind-wipe her too, and then kill the rest of the crew. Even if he changed his mind on it, this isn't something easily forgiven.

In regards to him being the only traitor, I think it is important to consider what Olive said in regards to making Luca inter-sex. It was hard, but with her skill, not impossible. And then you add in how Rei, Olive and Joe went the extra mile and made sure that their clones grew up and developed in their image and their minds and bodies were molded to be suitable for the fields they were specialised, it means that none of anything involved to this was left to chance. Everything about this conspiracy was thought of to the most minute detail.

It's why I didn't rule out Aries turning out to have a hidden programing, some cybernetic modifications or the like. Because the Vixian noble who commissioned for both his and Sayla's clones would have wanted them to fit him and her. If they are going through with the designer baby stuff to the point where they are custom made to fit what they want, I won't rule out that ''Charce'' wanted his clone to be fully in his image and Aries to be in Sayla's.

What's more, if what he said about Sayla's condition being true, then her clone's mental status would need to be different to accommodate for a successful transfer. Maybe that's why Aries has photographic memory, so that it accounts for the coma Sayla had been in.

Shokugeki no soma 219

Yeah, poor Kuga doesn't stand a chance, no matter how bad he wants to win. Also, that's an interesting ingredient that Rindou is working with.

Thanks for all the recommendations for Dungeon Meshi, guys. The humor/concept def looks up my alley. Might have to send my husband on an errand next trip over to pick one up. Wish we had a proper bookstore here to check them out, but alas.

As for Shokugeki no Soma, I'm on chapter 7 now, and thanks to Isshiki and his naked apron I've found the strength to carry on. Somehow...

HOLY SHIT. I had no idea this was a thing, and now I'm shaking like I'm on a caffeine drip. It's an adaptation of a light novel of an RPG Maker horror game that I absolutely adore. I talked about the synopsis in that post, but in essence the titular witch is a piece of shit, and this story is about how why she's a piece of shit. Judging from this recent first chapter it'll be sticking closely to the LN's plot, which is great news, because Yuna Kagesaki (Karin, Onii-chan Control etc) is someone I'd definitely trust with the art but not the writing.

I already know how everything's going to play out, but damn, I'm still more hyped for this than for any other manga right now

The hilarious part is that Erik is like a super minor character but Mashima randomly made him into a Dragon Slayer so there he is in the final battle.

Touhou - The Strange Bedfellows of Heron and Tapir (SFW doujin)
Now I'm curious about what heron tastes like. It's the same author who did Another Lunatic Kingdom, with actual yuri this time. Even if I didn't care much for the couple, I still enjoyed it for the messily colourful art and the surreal setting/dialogue. Now do another one, using the superior amanojaku.

Guess I'll just wait for it to be translated instead of playing the game then!
If you like those kinds of games then playing it first is definitely the way to go, partially because its content is generally different from what's being adapted, and partially because some of the 'surprises' work far better in game format. But if not, the manga should still (hopefully!) be an enjoyable read. Most of the magazine's readers probably won't have played the game so the author should take that into account in the writing.
