Digital Foundry: If Xbox One X is $500 - How much will next-gen consoles cost?

Probably still $500 or less?

However the tech shakes down, both Sony and Microsoft would be insane to try to launch higher than that and it's something they are both acutely aware of.

I was under the impression that when next generation consoles launched, they tend to use what was "state of art" hardware a year or so ago but had now become cheaper to manufacture in order to keep the costs of the consoles down. I don't see why it wouldn't be any different next time around.

$300 to $400 seems to be the sweet spot based on the fantastic sales of both PS4 and Switch, and comparative failure of the XO.

It's way too early to be draw any conclusions from the XOX though, given that it's not even out yet, let along been on the market for the many months we'd need to see the consistency of sales over. This approach of cramming as much power available into an expensive box like it's doing is in no way guaranteed to be a practice worth following.

I also do t think we're getting the PS5 and Xbox Two until at least 2020 either.

Imagine spec of Scorpio by with the rumoured Zen Nov next year. Same spec with a much better CPU would be a massage centres upgrade.

Probably $400, which makes a 2018 release doubtful. I don't see a new console coming until 2020 or so anyway. Sony won't be dumb enough to go past $400. They learned their lesson last gen

Honestly, I don't really get the whole 400$ maximum stance. It's like inflation doesn't even exist, sooner or later they'll have to go up with the price because otherwise the tech will be completely left behind or they'll have to subsidize again. It already started this generation.

A 400 dollar box in 2 years won't be meaningfully more powerful than a 500 dollar one this fall.

You're assuming next gen starts in two years. PS4 Pro and XBX ensure it won't.

Give it three years and we can easily see a decent GPU upgrade, and a huge CPU and RAM upgrade, compared to XBX for around $400. I'm hoping they also release $500 versions that are fitted with an SSD instead of an HDD though.

I'm all for 500 or 600 as long as we get a proper, beefy machine without big sacrifice.
I didn't watch the video cuz on mobile, but did DF take into consideration that X was launched
1 year later and most likely got the same BOM as Sony last year in the end?
Ms isn't selling X at a loss, they could stick with 500 because of the demographic it's meant for.

Then they'll make a totally rip console, flashy cpu & gpu... But not backwards compatible... And they'll make you buy remasters of current games, or old games... Coz, they can... And will.

It will be interesting to see how much a difference it is going for a Jaguar SoC to a Zen based SoC.

The rest of the hardware and the optimizations Microsoft has done with XboneX is quite spectacular, and it's being held back by this weak ass CPU part

$400 for maximum accessibility and $500 for personal reasons.

A higher baseline at the start of the gen means better games throughout the gen. A mid gen refresh would be even better then as the base hardware wouldn't hold it back a lot.

I only buy the slim iterations so I don't particularly care how much it is at launch.

$399 / £349 is the sweet spot, so they would be crazy to push for something much higher when next gen arrives.

PS5 in 2019 / 2020 will give Sony time to make something more powerful but cheaper than the Xbox One X, as component prices come down.

PS5 - 3.0GHz Custom Ryzen CPU, 8 - 10 Tflop GPU, 16GB RAM, 2TB HDD.

Not a massive leap forward but big enough to make a difference, handle 4k gaming well and keep cost down.

The next Switch will probably have the same power as the base PS4.

Nah, I think it should be a bit higher if Ninty plans to release it between the PS and Xbox gens like they did on the Switch.

Power should be between a base PS4 and a Pro. Should be great especially on portable.

Xbox One X does not belong in the equation in my opinion, the generational leap must be compared between the 2013 PS4 and the 2019/2020 PS5. And whatever power Xbox One X have, it runs Xbox One games, not new generation games, the real difference will be here.

---

Sony is never going higher than 400$ again, I have no doubt about that.

DF insight about timing is interesting though, they are basically convinced that 2019 is too soon to see a PS5 that would be really worthy of a next gen console.

I'm still on the november 2019 boat, but I don't know anything about how processors are evolving and components prices, so if we must wait 2020 so be it, it will allow PS4 base to grow even further and maybe FF7 Remake, Death Stranding and GT7 will actually be made for PS4 ^^'

I don't see Sony moving away from the $400 price point. They have done too well at that price to make sense for them to aim higher.

Assuming PS5 releases in Fall 2019, what specs can we expect them to hit for 399$? Barely higher than Scorpio?

Same question for 2020 eventually.

Interesting article.I actually think console makers should release next gen consoles when the tech available is a huge leap over what we got now but can be got at affordable prices. Maybe wait a year or two after new technology has been released before using them in the new consoles. In an era where we now got mid-gen refreshes, I don't think base consoles should be priced higher than $399 at launch... That's just my opinion though.

DF and their clickbait question videos are really cluttering my YouTube feed.

I wish I could just get Face-Off and Analysis videos.

Price will be similar to now, might be a tad higher but not by much, anything else would be shooting themselves in the foot and asking for trouble. There's a limit for what your average consumer will be paying for these toys as we've witnessed in the past, price it too high and the stock just won't fly, simple as that. Anyway next gen will not arrive before 2019 and probably even later than that, so plenty of time for tech to evolve and prices to drop.

I really hope consoles are more powerful than a high, mid-tier PC of last year in the year 2020.

I'm not trying to sound condescending, I just hope tech has moved on past what we have now, allowing cheaper and more efficient hardware by then.

You know maybe watch the vid or read the article.

Why?

For their opinion on what might be coming in the next couple years?

Kind of worthless at this point.

Remember back before the PS4 and the Xbox One existed and people were speculating that the next gen systems would realistically have 2GB RAM. Or how about when the CEO of Crytek was saying the next gen systems would need 8GB RAM and everyone laughed at him.
And then when 8GB GDDR5 RAM was confirmed everyone was going wild with price speculations, mostly $599 but none seriously considered $400.

We didnt have a freaking clue what was possible for the current gen consoles in 2010 and we, including DF, dont have a clue what is possible for the next gen consoles today.

Price to manufacture will be cheaper because they will be anticipating selling more of them thus buying more in bulk. PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were never intended to sell PS4/Xbox One type numbers. I think Sony will go for the $400 target. It just depends on whether they take a small loss initially or just wait a bit longer to release.

2019 just screams "a tad better GPU, much better CPU" to me which sounds too small of a jump.

Even that 1 year delay could mean noticeably cheaper parts which is why I'm thinking it's fall 2020 at earliest.
