If you select it that friend will be bumped to the top of your friend list. That's all it does. You can't send messages on the Switch by the way.

You have the option of making it so only best friends can see your online status, so if you only want certain people from your friends list joining you online, that's the way to do it.

EDIT: That feature is not new, by the way.

but we still can't message friends? wtf man. Please don't lock something so simple as just messaging friends behind the subscription paywall. ugh

An actual update with actual new features, nice. And they addressed the random HDMI switch bug.

- Improvements to prevent unintended HDMI input change with certain TVs while the console is docked in Sleep Mode

HALLELUJAH! Now, I don't have to shut down my Switch when playing other consoles... hopefully. Although, I think this still happened even when my Switch was turned off. Hmm...

Does this mean I can play games in black and white if I want to? it would be cool to play BOTW that way for a bit.

Yup

But screenshot/post won't post them in grayscale if you do. I already tried. You need a capture card.

So...where's GameXplain to do a Mario Kart 8 Tournament where Andre races entirely in Grayscale to make it fair?

Nice update. Quite a few good updates.

General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:

- Resolved an issue that caused game software updates to fail and prevented the software from starting
This one I think is what happened to me. I didn't even get an error code and had to send it in to be repaired.

I just switched to greyscale and wow BOTW looks awesome! I'm gonna play this way for a while and see if there is any drawback to gameplay. Right now, it's kind of blowing my mind.

What would be the point of messaging friends on a game console without being able to invite them into a game? Might as well use your phone then, which has more messaging options.

Really good update. Eager to test whether the popup on my LG TV will stop now. Shame about no folders yet, though I guess the need isn't generally there yet.

sooo.... could you turn your joy-cons into small vibrators with the "find my controller"-thing?

just asking for a friend *cough*

Honest question: why would you want to connect a keyboard to your Switch?

Minecraft for Wii U supported USB keyboards, but that support was quite limited. I guess the upcoming Minecraft update might include full command support, just like the PE and PC versions.

Is anyone in GAF expect a Switch redesign or hardware update later down the line? Thinking about getting a Switch this holidays but maybe I should wait if they're releasing a Switch 2.0 in 2 years or so.

This right here

Weird that it disables amiibo scanning

My thought would be that when connected via USB, all wireless functions are shut down.

If you are willing to wait two years... It sounds like you don't really want one

The pause between "find my controller" buzzes is very lengthy. But for quick pervy jolts, sure, there are worse ways to void your Joy-Con warranty.

Is it possible to set the notification of online friends to only when docked (or is that the default anyway)? Wouldn't want to waste the battery having it pinging wifi while it's in a case in my bag.

I'm sure they can do some changes and improvements, but honestly, I do love the switch as is.

Nice updates.

Is 4.0 when we get the real UI more along the lines of 3DS, media apps, and a completely overhauled Eshop? Because those are sorely missing by now.

Does the thing bother connecting at all in sleep mode while not in the dock?
They've been so battery conscious with most other aspects, i guess I just never tried to see if a download continued while away from the dock.

Good to see the HDMI imput switching issue getting worked on. Would also be pleasant if maybe in the future we could get that 1080p UI.

Bah, was hoping they would fix the UI 720p problem.

Why no ARMS user icons? Nintendo please.

I'm surprised we didnt get new icons even before Arms for games like SF2 or MK8. I suspect there will be an icon shop at some point, ideally they could be unlocked in games or using those worthless my nintendo points.

If someone is saying that this is a lackluster update with nothing worth mentioning, then I'm more than willing to bet that someone would say this would have been too major for an incremental update.

You are 100% wrong. As an incremental update it would have been praised.

Pretty substantial update, if they can crank these out every 3 months I'll be happy.

Not a fan of the new touch keyboard though - the space bar is too small now.

Did anyone else get a controller update for the Joy-Con R only? Does this enable the home button light?

Nintendo doesn't do version numbers like that, for whatever reason. That's why the 3DS firmware is at version 11 or something. You'll never know what you'll get with a +1 version increase.

It seen WIFI range is better with this update, from the same range before 1 signal now 2 or before 2 signal now 3~
Also one thing I want to point out is the video player of the switch is updated, before 3.0 the colour of video player is little bit washed out, now it become as colourful as the real game!! (News video/E shop video)

3.0 is really impove many thing to the systems!

GaneXplain said keyboard support was there from day 1, but hey... my old Wii Wireless Logitech Keyboard is now hooked up and working with my Switch. But please, NIntendo... gameplay video recording/sharing next.

Nice update, though nothing much that impacts me.

Playing BotW in greyscale is a cool novelty though.

Just tried that (and inverted colors) and it was cool! I accepted some old friend requests too (and now find myself adding everyone available from Wii U & 3DS, which is surprisingly super quick and simple so much that I can add every individual while reading this thread).

Also following some channels (Odyssey, Splatoon, Mighty Gunvolt, and something else...)

This update fixes a vulnerability in the NS sysmodule. Nintendo's going after those homebrew entrypoints from the get-go now.

Wait. So you're telling me that this update is worthless because it's called "3.0" and not "2.4.0", even when it would have had the same features?

You know what? Then I'm OK with being 100% wrong, because what you're proposing is absolutely nuts. The epitome of pettiness.
