Nintendo Switch: new Firmware update available (Ver. 3.0.0)

It seen WIFI range is better with this update, from the same range before 1 signal now 2 or before 2 signal now 3~
I have experienced this too.
Not your bar range but I wasn't really able to connect to the net in one room and now I can and even played a few lagless rounds of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online.

Is intelligent systems still on OS duty?

I wonder if the major OS overhaul will come with whatever DeNa is building for the smartphone app.

I can't believe it took them this fucking long to fix the HDMI thing. That should have been fixed a week after launch. Slow as molasses Nintendo.

It's been 3 months since launch. 3DS is at 10.something, version number doesn't mean shit. It's not like they'll end support when they reach 10 or something. If we don't get cloud saves by the time the paid online thing launches it's time to worry.
Yea I agree.

Can you move games to SD card from internal and vice versa yet or just redownload?

Still waiting for a way to access the full power down menu using a controller, that or a way to change the standard sleep mode to power down in the options so that a quick button press on the console would be enough (instead of having to hold it down).

That said, the wired communication using the pro controller is definitely nice for those that want to minimize lag for fighting games. Hopefully arcade sticks will be able to benefit from this as well.

Just tested this:

"Find paired controllers within communication range by activating the vibration feature"

This may be mentioned already but this has some potential to have sex games with you're partner :D

Good shit.
That entitlement.
Entitlement is wanting basic features you come to expect in a mobile device you paid $300+ for? Okay.

You can't even set a background image on this device. I could do that on a Nokia phone from a decade ago. The lack of basic features on the Switch is mind boggling.

The one thing I want is being able to select my eShop language, or have it so the eShop language is the same as my system language. Right now I have my console set to English so I get to play games in English, but since English is not one of the three official languages for my country, it defaults my eShop to French. Definitely a case of trying to do too much, to the detriment of the user experience. If they had made the system dumber, this wouldn't have been an issue to begin with.

This used to happen on PS3 loads. People would assume that just because it's an integer, it's a game-changing update. Bear in mind that trophies and in-game music came in update 2.40 haha

That's because software version numbers have a certain format for a specific reason. It's supposed to be along the lines of; A.BC. Where A is an overhaul to the entire software suite, B is a large addition of a feature or sizable change, and C is bug fixes and fairly minor revisions (C can also be a letter rather than a number, 7.01b/7.1b). It's really only game companies that just release new versions all willy nilly with a complete disregard for that format, and a lot of them still adhear to it--every expansion for WoW increases to the next integer (Vanilla = 1.xx, TBC = 2.xx, WotLK = 3.xx, etc.) and major content patches are normally the first number after the decimal (first major content patch for TBC was 2.1 for example).

Use the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller via wired communication by connecting the USB charging cable
To enable, head to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication

Please tell me this will be possible on PC!

Obviously Nintendo will keep developing the OS, but the fact that they see save data backup as something that is not needed from the get-go is a big point of concern -- making backups of save files should be something that was included in the 1.0 release.

The online service is not launching until 2018, and why should I have to pay Nintendo to backup my save data? It's time to worry now.

I'm not saying we need cloud-based backups right now, just the ability to do so locally in case the Switch is lost or gets sent in for repair.

Does the lack of not being able to set a background image on the Switch limit your enjoyment with the system? Is that really a basic feature when the game icons take 80% of the screen real estate? It's not a "basic feature" that it doesn't have, it's just "missing" because there's no use for it and I'm sure Nintendo and Nvidia never said to themselves "You know what would be great? Being able to put your low resolution screenshots as backgrounds. I'm sure everyone would like that!". Complain all you want about not having achievements and system wide voice chat or not being able to record video and invite friends to play games from the OS, but not being able to have a background image? Come on now.
It's all the basic features it lacks. I mentioned background images because it takes almost no effort on Nintendo's part and they couldn't bothered to add even that. Never mind themes, friends messaging, save data backup, Netflix/app support, music/video player. Basic shit that should've been here day one and still no sign of any of it.

I'm just guessing here, but I'd say it's probably likely that we'll get cloud save backups before local save backups. Once saves can be moved off and back onto the system hackers can start trying to edit saves to inject code.

I think your first mistake was buying a gaming system and expecting it to have a full Tablet feature set.

Not that I wouldn't like most of those features too, but they've been pretty clear about the fact that they want to push this as a gaming system right now. If it were viewed as a "mobile device" by the public then it could potentially be seen as a competitor to iOS and Android, and Nintendo isn't winning that fight.

Yes, I suspect this is their reasoning too. There must be a solution though? I think both the Wii U and 3DS are able to backup save files, although they remain tied to the specific consoles the files came from originally?

Call me crazy, but I bought a gaming system expecting it to contain the same basic features as any other gaming system, including Nintendo's previous one.

The Wii U, 3DS, PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One all have these features. Granted it took them time to get them, but in their defense it's because most of that functionality wasn't developed at the time they launched. Nintendo launched a barebones OS and has been very quiet about what they plan on adding to it.

One feature that seems to be overlooked is the ability to flag/like News articles. Looks like Nintendo is serious at basically doing what Valve now does in suggesting content or games or news that users would like to see.

In the future when there's enough content and news articles and Switch users I wouldn't be surprised to see eShops become tailored to user preferences like how Steam has "your store" as the default store.

The Wii had it since launch too, you were able to copy saves to an SD card and store them wherever you like. I'm not all that fussed about cloud saves (since Switch is a hybrid anyway) but I want a means of backing up my saves locally at the very least.

Edit: Is this actually possible right now if saves are on your microSD card?

Is it confirmed that the 8bitdo controllers also work in wired mode?

I'm eyeing the new SNES controller and the NES arcade stick announced at E3, and if they work wired then that would definitely seal the deal for me

Played some Garou with my Pokken controller; so goooooddddd!!

Also I'd love to be able to use my Wii classic controllers, because I have the SNES classic controller. I know there's a Mayflash adapter for them, but I'm assuming that won't work (now). I don't have one so I can't test it.

Keep in mind that this will affect what the console's theme is

Someone could tell me Inverted Wonderboy was a 1980s metal album cover and I'd believe them.

Edit: And Inverted Zelda's a prog rock one.

Saying that you want X feature in the OS is one thing.

Saying this update is worthless because it doesn't have that one thing you want is another completely different thing.

Also, it's not like there wasn't any information about what the Switch had or lacked at the time of release. If you wanted those features so badly, you should have waited until the Switch had them. You can fault Nintendo all you want for lacking "basic functionality", but it was you who bought the system based on a promise of things to come (that they never actually made, as far as I'm aware).

So we're at version 3.0 and we still can't backup our game saves to external storage. This is quite concerning to me.

The Wii U got hacked through backing up your game saves to external physical storage. Expect Nintendo to be extremely cautious of having this option with the Switch.

I moved from Switzerland to UK, so I changed the country my MyNintendo account - which unlinked it from the NNID. Now I can't add my friends from my NNID because the NNID is still "Switzerland" and not UK, so it wont let me link it.

Is there any way to change the NNID's country settings?

Greetings
Ryan

Uh, didn't know that (haven't really followed the whole homebrew stuff on the WiiU), do you happen to know if there was some heavy encryption in place or something like that?

I'd be fine with cloud as a storage/backup solution on the Switch anyway.

Is there any way to change the NNID's country settings?
Not sure if there's actually an option there (never had to), but have you tried tinkering with http://accounts.nintendo.com settings?

EDIT hmm, I stand corrected apparently :-\

Wired io on the Pro controller is awesome, though the NFC disabling is weird. Maybe NFC and Bluetooth share the same chip and it shuts it off?
It's almost certainly because they don't want people sending fake Amiibo data down the USB cable

Yeah in the spot I usually play in I would get 2 bars, now I get full bars.

I wonder if the Switch's wireless antenna wasn't running at full power before this update but Nintendo decided to up the power to the max even though it will drain the battery faster.

Wifi signal is drastically improved, I hope they fixed local play because it was so terrible that it was unplayable, it is my main problem with the switch right now.
