Cave Story coming to Switch [June, $30, new local MP mode, new bonus stages]

I always forget that Cave Story has one of the biggest difficulty spikes any game I've played.

Going from a basic walk in the park with some curves here and there, to a barbwire covered mountain climbing adventure with dental floss and a tooth scraper as your gear

So, which soundtrack are you guys using?

Famitrack, Organya, Cave story+, Remastered?

Famitrack, it's different enough from the original Organya tracks without sounding too Sega Master System FM-ish as with the other 2 soundtracks

So question, does the Gamestop pouch/keychain come seperately or in the case? and what about the Mini CD is it also an exclusive?

Did this get a physical release in Japan, as well? Wanted to get it physical if I can but I'll have to download it if not :/

Also I guess I should ask if the same language rule applies to this game as other Switch releases? Like, all languages are in the game and it auto-selects my system language, right?

I feel regretful not having gotten it at GameStop. My Amazon order arrived, but I so want that keychain + pouch. Should I return my order or is it too late to walk in a GameStop to see if they still have a copy bundled with the keychain?

If they have extras they might give you one.

It's all in the case. Fits well, too.

I don't think it's too late. Call some stores!

I might try visiting one early tomorrow nearby. There's also one inside the mall area, but I'm wondering if Amazon will let me return the package back considering its been open.

Likewise, I don't mind buying the keychain/pouch off of someone, too (provided they aren't scalping prices).

Famitracks as well. It might just seem like an "enhanced" Organya version, but it manages to remain the most faithful while also adding a sprinkling of unique qualities to the composition thanks to the MMC5 instruments. Also not all of them are straight up note-per-note transfers from the Organya: there are subtle flurishes here and there that differ from the original.

If you broke the shrink-wrap they might give you a hard time. But ask! Amazon has amazing CS.
Thanks alot, gonna try tomorrow in the hopes that it's more of a first shipment bonus than strictly preorder only
It's a first run thing, not a preorder thing as far as I know.

I think the Switch version might be my new favorite way to play Cave Story, behind the DSiware release. DSi version is still king though!

A Japanese physical release is happening, but no release date yet.

Man, buying this game and reading the instruction manual really makes me miss the days where I'd crack open a new game and read the manual on the way home. I miss that so much.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Yeah, and the manual being like the same size as the ones that came with Game Boy games kinda drives that whole point home. It's cool.

Played this non-stop with no issues at all today. Can't wait to finish it again after all these years. Don't think I've touched this thing since the freeware version was released. I've forgotten so much!

Totally agree with you! It's probably really sad how much manuals make me smile, especially this game's. I got a big kick out of the "STOP! If you turn this page you may place yourself at risk for spoilers....." page and the page right after. Had a real "Startropics" moment with that thing! (took me about 10 seconds, and then I giggled like an idiot when I saw it).

When does the spike hit? This is my first time playing (so no spoilers) and I'm maybe halfway through the
labyrinth
.

It's only if you
go for the best ending and play through the Bloodstained Sanctuary
where that massive spike happens,
playing the game normally without going there
is a moderate difficulty curve that won't feel sudden

woo just got it, first time ever playing cave story... I am sucker for 2D games with sprites XD
I see alot of talk about sountrack, not sure which one is the original or for that matter where
each one comes from. Just curious since i plan to just change it on a whim every time I boot the game

Organya. Original and best version. Don't know what these guys are talking about.

Picked mine up after a long day of work. So stoked on the Tuesday release! There were two preorders for the game in my very dinky northern Alaska town and tons of copies around the stores here. I can't wait for 1001 spikes. Nicalis is doing the Switch proud.

so the cave story+ soundtrack is well a special one made for the + edition
Then the remaster is from 3ds one? or from cave story+ (its pretty much a remaster right?)
famitracks are just an 8bit remake of organya which is the orginal.
Hopefully i got that right, even though I phrase them as questions lol

So I know this is probably a very dumb question, but my only method of playing CD's is in my car. Will putting this mini CD in my car stereo be a bad idea? Or do I need to hook up my GameCube to play this? Please go easy on me GAF. :(

As a previous Organya purist, I actually really like the Famitracks remixes.

I tried. Some caught my ear and weren't too overt. But if the Scorching Back is bad, the rest of the soundtrack is considered ass. I don't know why so many fail at covering or converting That particular track to my liking.

I hope 1001 spikes gets a physical releases, I'll be supporting it day 1 if it gets one.

With Binding of Isaac and Cave Story both getting retail releases, I would have to think that 1001 Spikes (and Hydra, as well) would get a retail release. And the game totally deserves one.

I'll buy it.

Package for Cave Story lists it a a 120M gamecard...unless I'm reading the image wrong.

I love getting inexpensive physical releases like this.

I had no way to play the mini-cd but then realized it works on my tray-fed 360.

I wouldn't risk it. Slot players that are compatible with them are pretty uncommon.

They really are. I regret missing Isaac, wonder if a first press edition is impossible to find now...

Someone should definitely make an OT. I'd do it myself, but I've never made one before - so I'm not sure of the procedure?
Never done one. Maybe I should start practicing for when the next time this game gets a rerelease.

Don't put it in your Car's CD player. Too risky

If you're a first time player, choose Organya (which was the original synthesizer module used in the free/initial release). After that, pretty much pick whichever you prefer.

I myself prefer Famitracks. And yeah, this is another Organya purist person who got converted. Second choice would be (3D) Remastered. Last choice is Cave Story+ tracks, although I feel those could be more considered as remixes than rearrangements.

Anyone else note the similarities between this game's manual and the original Metroid's manual? Pretty cool touch.
