Avatar sequels officially begin filming Sept 25. Are standalone sequels.

Ascending the stage during 20th Century Fox’s presentation at CineEurope this evening, Lightstorm Entertainment’s Jon Landau offered an update on the four upcoming Avatar sequels. Production on the James Cameron-directed pics, which will be stand-alones but together form “an epic saga,” officially begins September 25 with performance capture, Landau told the assembled exhibitors in Barcelona.

The production start date has been somewhat fluid, seeming to jockey over time. In April, when the sequels’ release dates were set, the Avatar Facebook page touted, “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels.”

Landau tonight noted Cameron “has done a couple of sequels before in his career and I would argue that those sequels have lived up to, if not exceeded, the original movies.” That starts, he said, with the foundation of a script and “that’s what Jim has been working on for the last several years… Finally, we have the four scripts for the Avatar films ready.”

During the development phase, “some of the industry’s best artists” have been working on designing a world of these movies, said Landau, who then showed a premiere preview montage of some of the designs of Pandora and its inhabitants.

“At the heart of any movie are the characters,” Landau continued. “One of the strengths of great scripts are always the universal and relatable themes… There’s no more relatable theme than family. At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family. Each sequel will play as a stand-alone movie. Each movie’s story will come to its own conclusion… However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.”

While developing the scripts, the decision was made to continue to set the movies on Pandora. “We always knew that Pandora was a place as diverse as Earth,” Landau said. The original cast is reuniting for the films while Landau also noted that Game Of Thrones‘ star Oona Chaplin has joined the cast and will be involved in all of the next movies.

I thought they already filmed part 2?
You mean to tell me this man has been busy with avatar 2 for 8 years?

EDIT: Took out snarky language since OP edited to include excerpt from article.

In any event, looks like all four movies still revolve around Jake and his family and will be interconnected.

Not sure what to think of these though. It's been a long time. I'll stay cautiously optimistic.

Might as well be a reboot at this point because literally no one gives a fuck about the original Avatar movie.

He was also doing the scripts of 3, 4 and 5.

2 and 3 will be filmed back to back as well. I think.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
So is Sam Worthington actually in these movies? Because that dude fell off the face of the Earth years back

I'm super curious to see what this pans out to be, despite really disliking the first. Only James Cameron can make that happen for me.

Sully's teenage son is a dick, reckless, gets into trouble or becomes a traitor after he wasn't allowed to take his girlfriend flying or kills someone doing stupid things, banished, works for the humans as he hates his dad so much!

Unless he got one of those percentage of gross deals I doubt he is that rich or got paid loads for Avatar.

It will be an incredible fucking feat if Cameron actually manages to pull off filming four movies at the same time. Godspeed.

The woman who has two franchises going at the same time versus the guy who's last film was called The Shack...

I'll repeat what I literally just said a few posts earlier:

He was also in Hacksaw Ridge just before that, a movie that was nominated for Best Picture six months ago. Pretending The Shack is the only thing he's done lately is disingenuous.

I'm going to be genuinely excited when these movies finally start filming.

James Cameron has been in the kitchen for close to a decade, and in all due time he's going to present us a bloody ambitious meal.

Whether that meal will actually be any good or not is another matter.

You don't think Cameron got paid loads for Avatar? lol.......

edit: oh Sam Worthington. I would assume he knew that he was doing a Cameron movie and negotiated a decent paycheck.

In all seriousness, very very VERY glad Cameron's abandoning the "cinematic universe" mentality in favor of movies that happen to take place in the same cinematic universe.

Wonder how these are going to turn out, the first was pretty boring to me but so much money is being dumped into these.

As others have said, he had a % cut of box office (and DVD/blu-ray sales), and it's estimated he made about $350-400m or so from Avatar.

Hopefully my grand-daughter gets to see the conclusion of this movies in 60 years.
