The worst part is they didsn't even shop him around. They could have done way better than Bourque, but they literally called only Calgary and made the deal.
Shows you how fucked up Montreal is. Subban has a big personality. Gets traded. AGally is a typical 23 year old. Probably getting traded. Cammalleri made a comment the night before about the team not competing. Traded mid-game the next day.

Well that's disappointing. The mistake was the Oilers didn't trade Eberle a year ago when he actually had some trade value. After a disappointing season and invisible playoffs, there was little interest and it became evident that it was going to take some serious salary retention to move him. Many in Edmonton even said he should have been exposed in the expansion draft, but at least this way Edmonton gets something for him.
Even after a stick change Eberle had problems hitting the net. He became a soft perimeter player who didn't want any physicality on the boards. So he struggled on the 2nd line and 2nd powerplay and wouldn't even be a top 6 forward next year, so how do they get rid of that salary?
Just Strome? *groan* How can I polish a turd? Strome can play center, badly. His crappy FO% will fit right in. Perhaps he can play wing with McDavid? Perhaps there's still some potential? He definitely can't play any softer than Eberle.
But no doubt about it, this is a pure salary dump. It's something the Oilers desperately needed. Salary cap space is gold and teams give up good picks and decent players to get it. That's what the Oilers did here. They can now sign Russell and plan ahead for long term McDavid and Draisaitl contracts. That would have been very difficult dragging that Eberle contract.

More Duchene to Nashville murmurs...I had heard enough of this shit around the trade deadline.
There is pretty much no way that Nashville gets Duchene without losing a top four defenseman, which Poile would be absolutely insane to do.
