The Wonderful World of Switch Joy Con Mods

I'm on vacation in the U.S. for the summer and I brought along my Nintendo Switch with the hope of finally digging into Zelda. Once I got here, I also decided to pick up ARMS on the eshop. Since I only have one set of joy cons, I thought I'd grab another so that I might do some multiplayer with my nephews. Unfortunately, the only joy cons I could track down in stores were the charcoal (which I already have), and those god-awful yellow ones. While searching online to find a cheap source for a red/blue set, I ended up coming across some customs. Flash forward to today and I've spent nearly $300 on custom joy cons.

First up was this right joycon modded with colored New 3DS buttons.

I love the Super Famicom color scheme, and bought a standard sized New 3DS basically just to have those buttons, so as soon as I saw this, I jumped on it.

Since I only purchased a single joy con, I still needed a full set for multiplayer. Still unable to track down official Nintendo colors, I found some other places that do custom paint jobs. After watching a video review https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GZJnTmwsioA of some of Doyle's Customs, I ended up ordering these babies from his Etsy shop:

I have been playing my childhood SNES at my parent's house in the States, so—though I now prefer the Super Famicom style—these induced some nostalgia. Still waiting for them as they take four to six weeks. They also are available with the grip:

I've also seen a Gamecube purple set which I considered, and may pick up eventually.

Has anybody else gone the custom route after being unable to track down official joycon colors? Post what you've got.

If you're interested in jumping in, here are a few links to get you started:

Edit: I guess Etsy links are prohibited as the one I posted here has mysteriously disappeared. I do apologize.

I like the three orange shades that Colorware offers, though I can't quite tell what's closest to the Gamecube's "Spice" color....

Jesus Christ $149!?

Noo....thank you.

I actually always liked the color scheme of the SNES in NA, and would love that paintjob on my joycons. Also the price is fine. That kind of paint isn't cheapest and there is labor involved. Expect prices to go down when more people start actually doing custom paint jobs for Swich.

SNES set is beautiful. SwitchForce did a review and it looks great in action.

I'm hoping third parties come out with joycons in crazy form factors, like the fan mockups. GameCube joycons, etc.

Looks like something went terribly wrong with this, and I don't mean the kerning (which is also killing me).

Nintendo needs to just make official ones. But of course they can't even stock enough of the main colours in the first place or even the switch system itself.

Nintendo really should consider making an "Elite" left joycons that can have its stupid dpad switched out with a proper one.

Not saying the price doesn't match the quality because damn they look good...but not for that much. Would hope Nintendo make official versions.

The GCN and the New 3DS button ones look absolutely loved. I really hope Nintendo comes out with multiple Joy Con variations. Would sell boat loads.

Any joycon mods with the NGPC clicky d-stick yet?

That would be amazing, I love the microswitch dpad on the NGPC and especially the Neo Geo pad. Even though it takes a fair amount of routine maintenance, lol.

But putting that mechanism in would be...complicate.

They all look beautiful!
But when the OP mentioned about spending like $300, I thought it was like 5 or 6. But looking at the prices, is just one or half if its only one side...so two.

just ordered all of them great stuff
Hahaha XD

Overpriced controllers, overpriced paint jobs.

They're real pretty, but....no. I'd consider the button mod if it's something I could do.

Some of these are quite cool - I particularly like the difference just colouring the buttons makes - but that's a lot of money to spend.
