Video Game Characters you thought would make it big... but didn't

I was cleaning up some old gaming magazines the other day from the good ol' 90s era of gaming and I was amazed to see so many game characters nobody remembers or cares about gracing the cover of many magazines at the time, characters I often remember feeling would become as big and timeless as a Mario, Sonic, or Lara Croft.

But none left that impression on me more than Perfect Dark's Joanna Dark.

And all the signs were there for her to become Nintendo's Lara Croft. Her game was universally praised, her character was wickedly attractive and highly proficient, and her face was everywhere for a few years leading up to the game's release and shortly afterward. I thought for sure we'd get a new enduring franchise out of the series and a new leading lady in games to join the ranks of Samus Aran, Jill Valentine, Chun-li, and other timeless gaming icons.

Of course, things internally at RARE got complicated, but even as Microsoft bought them out I held on hope, seeing as Perfect Dark Zero had quite the marketing blitz for it as well.

Perfect Dark Zero wasn't a very good game, in my opinion, but it did sell a lot of copies, but after that it seemed Joanna's time in the spotlight was definitively over. Rather than enduring as a beloved video game icon, she's pretty much stuck in the dustbin of history alongside characters like Gex the Gekko, Glover, and Kameo.

Joanna isn't really thought of as a gaming icon now, and that got me thinking what other characters we thought were going to become enduring beloved characters that ultimately just sort of faded away after a brush with fame and attention. Nights, ToeJam & Earl, Blinx the Timesweeper... whoever it is, let me know which horse you backed and supported, only for them to fade into culture irrelevance and indifference.

OG Xbox is gonna have a ton of these characters. Since they were trying so hard with new IPs and what would stick.

if you read any publication in the early 90s you were led to believe Bubsy was the next huge thing. it's a joke now but it was going to blow Sonic out of the water supposedly

Acccolade really dumped a lot of money into magazines back then.

I remember seeing a scan of an ad where Accolade openly bragged about what a great and effective focus group they used for putting the game and character together. I guess the whole concept of focus groups didn't carry the same stigma it does today.

Wish I could find that scan again. Google hasn't really been any help.

i thought it was weird they never gave Perfect Dark another shot after Zero (which sold quite well didn't it?)

it probably would have if Rare hadn't been relegated to Kinect stuff. saturation of shooters and poor reception of Zero definitely didn't help though

I remember being a kid and wanting to buy Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg based on the character design alone. I didn't know anything at all about the game, but I saw the cover art and thought "that's a game I need to play."

But my mom said no so I never actually did play it. But I was convinced, at the time, that I was missing out on the next big thing.

I don't think there was any kind of real concensus that mascot-type characters would ever truly make it big again past the mid 90's. The trend had clearly run its course. Yet for some reason a few companies persisted. EA's Ty the Tasmanian Tiger was pretty much the final nail in the coffin in the 00's.

Earthworm Jim and the MDK character seemed very iconic, could've gotten bigger I feel.

At least Earthworm Jim was big enough, briefly, for his own line of toys, Marvel comics, and a cartoon where he was voiced by Homer Simpson himself.

His star shown brighter than most... I'm in agreement that I thought he'd endure in pop culture a tad stronger.

Sackboy, for a short while he was everywhere and quickly disappear after that. It always feels like once Sony had a potential mascot, they drop them as fast as they possible can for one reason or another.

Earthworm Jim

Wacky humor, badass soundtracks, fun gameplay only didn't prevent Earthworm Jim from lasting past the 90's. That and Earthworm Jim 3D really, really destroyed this franchise.

If this was a franchise backed by one of the big companies Jim would have made it to the 00's. He had a HD remake of his original game in the 2010's but I thought he would have been right there with the other mascots of his time and day.

Gex is a decent shout too but I get why he hasn't gone past the 90's given his games really revolve around outdated humor.

Yeah the handling of Sackboy is crazy they finally vould have had a huge mascot for playstation but killed it.

I think they just don't care for eternal mascots:p

Crash was huge. As far as videogame characters that made it big, Crash is one of them. He's just not big anymore (But still has a loyal following for nostalgia). Earthworm Jim was also huge as well, as big as a new character could get for the 90s considering he got his own cartoon TV show.

Some good ones on here though.

I thought Blasto would take off, but again, Phil Hartman's death was the major contribution and it was good that they never made another one.

Spyro the Dragon and Croc are also two decent choices. Spyro had the makings a mascot hit, great game, good character design, and a dedication to several more releases, but Spyro the character was boring and ultimately those games stopped being popular and the character died off. Croc had no character, but the games were great.

That dude from Resistance 1 & 2.
I think Nathan Hale not getting on Playstation All Stars Battle Royale pretty much said it all.

Speaking of which, surprised Toro Inoue wasn't pushed more outside of Sony Japan. Like, maybe they could have had Toro in more games as a guest appearance in say Parappa the Rapper.

Perfect Dark coulda been bigger if they didn't skip a gen with no game after the debut, and when did bring it back didn't completely redesign the star.
