Manga remains the beat medium for Death Note. I expect this to be better than the Japanese live adaptation at least...

That's quite a lot of moneyshots for something like Death Note.

Still doesn't look too great, but will watch for Dafoe.

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Not really. He was a sociopath, but everyone around him thought he was pretty much a perfect specimen.
Dude called himself a god. Even him eating a chip was portrayed as a cold and calculated move by himself.

Light Turner ≠ Light Yagami

I have no idea how you can critique Light Turner in this American movie adaptation without seeing how well his character fits within the context of the setting and story.

I mean, this doesn't look a whole lot like Death Note, but I'm still in. I really want this to be awesome, and I'm not hating what I see. It's just different. Fingers crossed!

His reading of his lines were very stiff and unnatural. Im not critiquing the character but the acting.

L wasnt the subject.

Light turner and Light yagami was.

Y'know damn well they were never going to cast an Asian American in the lead. Truth be told, the thought probably never crossed their mind.

LOL I wasn't specifically addressing you, only those who keep comparing Light Turner to Light Yagami and using that as part of their critique.

Not a fan of this halfway localization. Either go full American or full Japanese. A pasty dude called Kira? Death God? That doesn't work if you don't have a culture of Kami, would be better off calling him a demon. A couple of other things make it look kinda eh too, though I do like some of the photography and of course Dafoe hamming it up.

i really like the shot of L in a white shirt, holding a phone by the top, with skittles(?)... haha. other than ryuk, probably the most anime-thing in the trailer.

I dunno. Considering KIRA is just "Killer" written in Katakana, it doesnt make much sense to still call him that unless Light is obsessed with Japanese stuff in this movie.
Because a killer being called "killer" is stupid in an English language movie.

Same reason why the dub of the anime still called him "Kira".

Light looks and acts way too different.
I bet they won't even have dramatic chips-eating, and
L will win

doesnt change the fact they should have. if they got some big name/good actor who actually looked like Light.... maybe I'd give it a pass. but they got this no name scrub who who didnt seem like light at all. gtfo

Looks alright. Not a direct adaptation, but adapting some of it's core themes and ideas.

Changing Light is most likely to make him more ambigious. Original light was completely unlikable ass.

I don't like this at all... I hate to be one of those people who whines about it not being true to the original, but none of the character personalities except Ryuk even remotely resemble the original characters. That would be fine if was an improvement but they all just look way cheesier, which is really saying something.

But I'll still watch it.

LOL Y'know the industry is made for them.

That's the only thing I don't get. I don't understand how they're using Kira or Shinigami in this version. I can only hope there's a good explanation.

Straight from Masi Oka...

“Our casting directors did an extensive search to get Asian actors, but we couldn’t find the right person, the actors we did go to didn’t speak the perfect English… and the characters had been rewritten,” he said. “They could have gone [with an] Asian [actor], I can’t deny that. The studios were adamant about trying to cast Asian actors. I mean, this was a difficult one. It was something we were definitely conscious about.”

first of all, there are a ton of young asian american actors who speak perfect english cause u know, they were born in America, also
the studio is full of shit because they literally told asian actors to their face that they werent looking to cast an asian. (which happened to Edward Zo). hell, Ki hong Lee would have killed as Light and hes been in bigger movies than this random nobody.

He is still Japanese in the anime. Anime characters often call Japanese things by their original Japanese name in English dubs even when there is an English equivalent to the word. Ex. Bento for Lunch box. Onigiri for Rice Ball. Sensei for Teacher.etc

In anime it makes sense for Light to call himself KIRA, as he is still Japanese. in an American movie it doesnt, unless as I said he is obsessed with Japanese stuff.

I really hope they don't try to humanize and soften Light in this. The trailer gave off the impression that Misa is the one that pushes him over the edge. The best part of Light's character is that he always a monster that no one would suspect except for L.

Yeah, I know the story, and I'm pretty certain it was the producers who made the final decisions for their movie. Ironically 3/4 of the producers are Asian American. The truth is they were probably only ever looking for White actors to play the part of Light.

then 3 of the 4 of those producers need to get snuffed in the face.

edit: theres 10 producers. 6 of the 10 are white.
