LTTP: Yakuza 0, aka what black magic makes this so amazing

If that's what you truly want, more power to you. But there's some risk involved, and it also speaks for a certain arrogance on your part. How could anyone be so sure that they'll survive the next two months? Even more if you count the time that it'll take you to finish Kiwami. A lot can go wrong in such a short time.

lol, good point.

Damn, Chapter 6...

That ending scene was so fucking good. What a tonal whiplash from shirtless Kuze riding a motorcycle at you in the sewers

I'm in Chapter 5, and holy shit did the game turn into titty bar Suikoden. This is amazing.

The ending to chapter 4 was great. That twist and cliffhanger.

lmao and yeah either that or weird Japanese softcore titty bar suikoden at least :p

Club cabaret is seriously super duper fun though. I'm not gonna lie if they put out a mobile version of it I'd probably buy it. Once you hit club moon and the game starts requiring more of you on the strategy end it gets stupid addicting. I laughed when I ended a later than you majima chapter and just totally broke the game's economy by playing too much CC and was at like 1:70:0 on my end chapter cash earned though combat/business/mini games and the silly trivia bit was at like 280x of whatever hahaha

Does anyone know if the game just ends at the last chapter or can you keep on playing? The game frequently mentions the ability to switch characters that seems to hint at it letting you keep playing considering the strict 2 chapters and switch structure the game has.

It really is a testament to how great this game is that every single time a switch happens I'm pissed off that I can't keep playing as that character because it's just getting too good and I don't want to stop their part of the game. It always makes me laugh at the irony of it when examining it in hindsight because I'm always heading right back into a chapter end that I was irritated to have to switch from to begin with!

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
The side missions are consistently good to great. I loved the fake ass Yanki Band and of course Miracle Johnson was hilarious.

Yes, 2 different files are being saved. Stupid PS3 system, luckily in Y6 there's auto-save implemented, finally.

*tsk tsk* *spin* *whooooooooo*
Yeah the save system drives me nuts. Yes I want to save...yes....confirm...yes...back....

Like the fact that we ever stomached this cockpiddle for an entire 8ish year long super generation is kind of crazy to me thinking back >.<

Love how the substories aren't all marked on the map until you find them

In chapter 7,
was crossing one of the bridges when my eye caught something different and I realized there was a statue on the bridge now. But the substory doesn't start until you get close enough to investigate. A player could just run past or just assume it's environmental decoration. The stories just naturally happening in the world rather than being tons of icon in the map makes the city feel so lively

And the great thing is there's an item
that lets you see the starting point of substories that you haven't done yet
. It's useful for when there's only a few substories left and you can't figure out where to go.

Cabaret Club could be its own game

This game is crazy. Is every Yakuza this packed with content and different mechanics?

Yakuza 0 is really a different level.

But Yakuza 5 had 5 protagonists, with 4 of them having their own unique activity which you could spend like 3-4 hours in for EACH activity. "
Taxi Driving, Hunting, Singing + Dancing and Baseball
".

The games before that didn't really have side-business or activities that were exclusive to a character though. But they still had a lot of stuff to do.

Nah, the series has been getting more and more content heavy as it carries on. If you jumped straight back into the original Yakuza it'd feel pretty barebones (But still packed with a lot content :p)

It really started from 4 when the content began to overflow.

Yakuza 4 introduced multiple characters.
Yakuza 5 introduced side content "Another drama" with the indepth sidecontent.
Yakuza Ishin returned to a single character, removed another drama but gave him multiple fighting styles.
Yakuza 0 is all of the above.

Ishin has Another Life though, where you plant crops, cook and sell them to the farm market :p

But yeah, Yakuza 0 is absolutely packed with content, it's nice to see more and more people discovering the game

OK Gaf.
I've never played the series but it seems like for some reason or other I just skipped over this either due to backlog or whatever reason.
If I get 0 will I be lost or should I start from the beginning?

Starting from 0 is fine. I wasn't lost at all.

Yakuza 0 is the perfect entry point into the series for newcomers. The story is a prequel that happens before every other game in the series so you'll get introduced to the characters with no issues. The game does not assume you know jack-squat about the characters.

After Yakuza 0, you can move on to YAkuza: Kiwami which is releasing on 30th August. It's a remake of the first game, and happens directly after Yakuza 0.

The Yakuza games are mainly standalone. Some characters might show up twice or thrice but other than that, the stories don't really assume any knowledge of the past games. The only game where I'd really recommend playing the previous one, is Yakuza 4 -> Y5. You'll be really lost in Y5 and the characters and their motivations if you haven't played 4.

But other than that, it's all good.

I'm just like you and 0 works fine as a story and a good place for a newcomer

Went ahead and ordered Yakuza 0. You're right, life is short. You gotta Yakuza while you canza.

Got it for $50 with Prime. I needed something to play anyhow.

Also quoting myself with some things that you should know before getting into the game.
Remember that there is no autosave. You have to save at a phone in your home base, or on the streets.

Just play at your own pace. The game is fairly slow but starts to open up by chapter 2 so you can just follow the main story, or do substories at your own pace it's up to you.

Substories (side quests) aren't marked on the main map, but you CAN obtain an item later on for both characters that reveals the start location for them.

The game allows you to finish every single side activity before the ending of the game, as well as AFTER finishing the story so don't worry about that.

That chapter end scene is one of my favorites in the game and MASSIVELY informs the story of Yakuza 1 in a way the original game didn't even do.

Yakuza and the ancient art of getting sidetracked.

Chapter 5

Oda told me it's been a long day and we should meet at the café after I check my new office.

Then I checked my office.

Then I decided to buy a few properties.

Then I noticed I could buy that sushi place if I befriended the chef, who wanted fresh fish. So I started fishing and stayed because I really wanted that coelacanth.

Then I noticed all the people from side stories who could join my business. So I got Spielberg, I got the stop and frisk guy, I went after the Yanki, I started hunting more phone cards to please the awful libido dude.

I eventually 100%ed the first area and everything opened up. So I started spending way more real estate money.

I just beat a fat kid at Outrun and Oda probably died of old age.

What the fuck am I doing with my life.

These LTTP Y0 threads makes me so happy. The game is so good and it's nice to always see new people play them and experience the wackiness/awesomeness of the series.

What's the name of the Item? I may need to use it eventually to finish the remaining substories

Every chapter ending has been riveting so far. Onto chapter 9

Damn, I think that's the chapter i'm actually now. I really need to go back to play the game

This is probably the best game on the PS4. Or at least its the most fun and charming game I have played on it. The story is amazing, the sidequests are insane, and some characters are flat out brilliant. I've yet to decide between this and Persona 5 for this year, both Ps3 games lol.

Cabaret club was so, so, so worth it. Some of the sidequests in there are balls to the walls.

And,

Pizza.

Just started Chapter 10

Yo, that subtle reveal about Tachibana. Tell me a second to register what the tattoo was. Well, now we know how the two storylines are going to merge.

Trouble Finder. There's also Encounter Finder too, which marks fights with mooks on the minimap, plus it's invaluable for hunting Mr Shakedown.

I am on the last chapter and I am absolutely blown away by the storytelling in the game. It is my first Yakuza game and I can't wait for Kiwami.

Yakuza Ishin returned to a single character, removed another drama but gave him multiple fighting styles.
IIRC, Yakuza Ishin still has another drama. It's actually much more like a sim where you can plant crops, sell your harvest, cock food, eat dinner, etc. And it has a a story about you using your hard earned money to pay a debt or something.

Cock food? Well you can have chickens I guess...
And yeah, the another drama for Ishin is all about helping Haruka who otherwise has no bearing on the main story.

I remember slicing carrots and stuff like that, and then having to cock them at the right temperature. I always messed that up tho lol

Just spent the day playing it.

Absolutely in love. Can't believe I gave Nagoshi shit for constantly churning out sequels instead of making another Monkey Ball, F-Zero or Binary Domain.

Dude and his team is talented.

Thanks to this great thread, just bought Yakuza 0, first timer to this series.

Will jump on it as soon as I finish FF15

Just love hearing about the awesome story telling and quality side quests.

Not as much, but every game had involved multi-stage side missions. There are characters in optional side missions from the first couple games who become prominent characters and/or receive character development in side missions in the sequels

I actually thought about that one but felt it didn't feel like it fit in with Yakuza 5's side content. Yeah you're meant to grow corps, sell them directly or as food and pay off Haruka's debt. However since I played it it was really... a time waste compared to the other another dramas from Yakuza 5, there wasn't much interactivity in them and it was worse than Kiryu's estate management sim. Sort of felt half assed compared to the other content I've played but who knows, maybe I lost something in the language barrier.
