Pachter: PS5 to be a half step, release in 2019 with PS4 BC

I don't want anymore jaguar CPU console half-steps. You could put better CPU's in the Scorpio and Pro and probably see a decent jump in what can be done with them. Just wait until a decent CPU can be made that has a low enough power consumption that it can be feasible to put in a console form factor.

Sorry but I'm not interested in hearing a prediction from the NeoGAF of video game analysts

Doubt this is happening

Eh.

I don't think he's completely wrong. I think the point of contention comes from whether you would consider the PS5 a half-step compared to the vanilla PS4 or PS4 Pro.

November 2019 is 6 years from the PS4 launch. I don't think Sony would want another 7+ year generation. The best 7nm mid-high spec GPU from AMD at that time would probably be in the 10-12TF range. The CPU would be a lot better than Jaguar. RAM isn't going to be much more than 16GB.

Whenever it comes out it needs to have a desktop equivalent Ryzen CPU in it. No more of this netbook shit.

Well broken clocks and all that.

Hmmm....maybe I'm reading this wrong, but Matt seems to be implying there is some truth to this. 2019 would be six years and about time for a new generation. As long as that half step from the Pro includes a Ryzen I'm good.

Didn't Sony said 33% of PS4 sales are Pro ? And at least in Quebec they disappear pretty quickly, seems to be selling just fine.

20% of total sales since it launched in November.

I think one thing these discussions needs to clarify when talking about the power uplift is whether people are using the Pro or the Base model as the power baseline.

Using the Base, going from 1.8TF to 10TF is a 5.5x power increase, using the Pro it's a 2.3 increase, essentially making the 'PS5' the same power step up as the Pro (at least in GPU terms - this doesn't include any benefits using Ryzen or custom components bring).

PS3 - PS4 was 4.5x uplift on GPU, so if Sony are using the Base model as their starting point for PS5, a 10TF machine in 2019 isn't an outside bet, and again CPU improvements driven by VR (something I've mentioned previously as being a potentially major design consideration for PS5) mean that even a 10TF console will be significantly more flexible in power for devs than the 2.3x over the Pro specs indicate.

Responses in Pachter threads are so annoying.

I read them because I hate myself. Same reason I check in on Breitbart once a week and read the comments.

To stay relevant to the topic at hand, I agree with him in this case.

All I hope is Devs PLEASE focus on 1080p 60fps FUCK more pixels it's unecesessary waste of system resources which that can be used to enhance visuals (better draw distance, better visuals settings etc)

If I do get PS5 I'm only buying 1080p 60fps games day 1 brand new support it

While games that don't reach this I'll buy it later cheaper and used.

They are not going back down to 1080p after the pushing for 4K. I don't even want to see a 1080p game right now.

They have to make a ps5.

The half steps will be for the hardcore and to keep competetive midcycle.

And everything will have to be BC.

Hmm, sort of agree.

I think it'll be more than a half-step though, it'll be at least enough to advertise a clearly visible advantage over the Xbox One X. I expect backwards compatibility though.

I would guess 2020 and a pretty hefty improvement under the hood. Sony and MS are deep in graphics warz at the moment and this is probably about the time that they're making crucial decisions regarding the direction to take with the PS5.

In other words, I think Pachter is right that there will be a PS5.

This just tells me that I need to finally get off my ass and finally build that desktop I've been thinking of.

how much faster can it be? It will surely support 4K. Will it support 240 frames per second? Great. Will it play games that were made for the PlayStation 4 PRO? That’s the question. I think it will.

I... don't think he understands how things work currently with consoles. Thats some weird phrasing, like he knows the talking points but doesn't know how they really fit together

i think in terms of GPU, the pro is pretty capable...and when paired with 'coding to the metal' 1st party console devs used, can be pretty incredible...so the GPU is not a problem. CPU is the bottleneck holding all the consoles (not just the .5 consoles) back. I think the CPU is the 1st thing Sony will upgrade so i dont think ps5 a 'half-step'. I don't think Sony will go back to using archaic CPU architecture so x86 will be a given. I don't think Sony will go with Intel as Intel's chips are way too expensive (and i don't think intel got an APU solution). So it's 99% confirmed back to AMD. So hopefully can produce a powerful and affordable enough Ryzen for the console makers to use. Let's not beat around the bush here...both MS and Sony chose Jaguar is because it's cheap. So i thin AMD will have to make Ryzen reasonable cheap enough before the console makers decided to jump full on to next gen.

If Cerny hands are involved, I think it will be a leap not a half step for PS5

Maybe whenever PS5Pro releases in like 2023-2024 that will be the half step

This lines up with reports that Sony didnt show new games at E3 because of PS5, which does make me think PS5 is 2019/2020

A 1070 is only 6.5 teraflops. That would be absolutely pitiful for a new generation 2 years from now.

Maybe in 2 years we will finally have games that push a 1070 :p

I think it comes down to when they can get the next die shrink on the zen apu more than year x or y. If that's 2019 then it'll be 2019, if it's 2020 then it's 2020.

Doesn't this fly in the face of what Cerny said? Didn't he say that the next gen system would not be compatible with the previous PlayStation?

I mean that makes this gen 6 years.
More than plenty.
Consoles can't go another generation of 7+ years with how much has changed

They can and they will lol. Releasing consoles every six years is a problem because games take at least half that time to be developed these days.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
10tflops at 16GB RAM and 600GB/s with an 8 core Zen CPU(the baseline minimum i expect from PS5) is no small jump from base PS4, it can absolutely give a next generation experience without a doubt

Doesn't this fly in the face of what Cerny said? Didn't he say that the next gen system would not be compatible with the previous PlayStation?

He said that Sony's interpretation of console generations is a clean break in how developers make games from the previous generation and the console hardware, nothing about compatibility of software
