Why am I enjoying DMC (Devil May Cry) ?

I don't get it Gaf, I thought I was supposed to hate this game as soon as I played it due to it not being made by Capcom and the fact they made Dante look like some skinny emo kid. I'm having too much fun with the combat system and the setting is dark and moody which I'm digging. The story isn't half bad and the only thing I'm having trouble with tbh is the camera system which can suck at times but other than that it's damn good. Oh and don't get me started on the OST for this game, it's badass. I honestly feel ashamed of myself for waiting this long to play the damn game. What's wrong with me?

Because it's a fun, unique hack and slash game with good mechanics and killer art design.

One of the best hack and slash games of last gen. I'd pay $60 for a sequel right now.

Is it DevilMayCry? Weeeeeellll. No, and I don't care. It's a fun game.

Lesson learned: don't let whining on the internet dissuade you from trying a game.

Edit: In a perfect world we will get both a DmC2 and a Devil May Cry 5 so everyone is happy. I'll take the latter as long as it has the former's gameplay.

DmC? I like how you think you're supposed to hate the game, and then you play it and are now confused because you like it. This is why it's important to play stuff yourself and form your own opinion.

The game taken on its own is pretty good imo. Easily the best title from Capcoma efforts with Western Devs. Though some of the edginess will vary by person (I didn't mind it).

However it's always going to have the stigma of carrying the DMC name and for a time being a potential threat to the old style and characters. Which is where a lot of the hate stems from. Once DMC5 is revealed. You'll see a lot more people coming around on the game knowing it isn't the future of the series. Much like how people as of late have been easier on RE6 after 7s release. I expect the same thing to happen with Other M to a smaller scale after Prime 4 comes out.

It's fine to enjoy it, just don't dismiss the people who didn't like it out of hand. DmC DE is also a lot better than the original release of the game, as well.

I thought you were talking about the PS2 game, and I would have had no answer for you. But since it's the new DmC game, the reason is that it's really good.

sorry not sorry

DmC is a really great game. Even better with the Definitive Edition.

I'll even go as far as to say that DmC: DE is the greatest western character action game ever made, but also superior to DMC4 and its special edition.

It's one of the best Western action games ever (okay that's not a high bar, but it's still very good) and the DE makes it even better. Though it was always a good game. Some questionable design choices doesn't change that. Not being the same as the original games doesn't make it bad either, just a different kind of great.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a continuation of this version of Devil May Cry. It has its own thing going which I'm digging albeit I haven't beaten it yet (I'm on Chapter 10) but if the story allows for a continuation of it, I'd be all for it.

Well nothing is ever as bad as people online make it out to be. I personally thought it was a good game, honestly liked it more than the first two Devil May Cry games. Just falls short of the likes of 3 and 4 but I find that only Bayonetta is as good as those ones

It's one of my favorite of that style of action game. I never got the general dislike for it, outside of it somehow "ruining" a character that, frankly, was pretty fucking lame to begin with.

Because gameplay-wise it's not nearly as bad as people have claimed

It's totally solid outside of the annoying boss fights

The story gets really, really bad, though. There is a pivotal moment that is just astounding in how hilariously awful it is.

You nailed it dude, that was the only problem

Baffles me why they didn't just patch the hair

But I noticed he started to get his silver hair in chapter 9, they even made a skin for that version of Dante if you wanted it that bad :l

Yeah DE is much better as someone who didn't like the Vanilla version at all. Turbo + Hardcore mode made the combat a lot more satisfying along with the pages long balance changes.

It's a good game at least the DE version is to me not great but good. It isn't as deep as the older titles mostly and the bosses basically suck but it's the best effort of a character action title I've played from a Western Dev. I don't like the new Dante or any of the new characters that much but that's a secondary thing that I can look past by skipping cutscenes and I also had an issue with the level design + platforming. I was looking forward to NT's next game until Hellblade's combat was shown off and looked like they didn't learn from DmC.
If I had to choose between the two I'd take the old DMC with some of the good ideas from DmC lifted.

IHonestly, I wouldn't mind a continuation of this version of Devil May Cry. It has its own thing going which I'm digging albeit I haven't beaten it yet (I'm on Chapter 10) but if the story allows for a continuation of it, I'd be all for it.

Seems very unlikely since it bombed hard and it seems like Ninja Theory moved on already.

Because it shares a lot in common with the later Dead Rising games in that they've siphoned out a lot of the core aspects of the game that made it fun resulting in a hollow-feeling experience for fans of the series.

And similarly said Dead Rising games are not bad but they do miss the mark.

Fans only hate it because it is so different, EVERYTHING is different from the old Devil May Cry, even the tone of the game is completely different.
I can totally understand why fans are angry, I WAS angry too.

However, deep down I always know this isn't a bad game, in fact, I think it's a great game.

If only Capcom made this a new IP, call it something like ''Heaven & Hell'' or something, it would've receive much more positive feedback and maybe even become a huge success.

But they have to cash in on the name Devil May Cry, and that casue the game to fail spectacularly.

It wasn't

but you know, when people who like a video game, have to lie about people who don't like a video game. You know they don't have confidence in the video game they like are chatting shit.

Maybe you should have more confidence in entertainment decisions and not create us vs them delusions that only serve your ego.

You don't remember people screaming bloody murder that it wasn't Metroid?

This Website?

The critical reception was also a notable step down despite the game being generally considered superior in hindsight.
I don't remember that continuing at all much after the game actually released, compared to something like this game where both sides kinda always go after each other. Especially when you still get driveby posts like this one when the game first came out 5 years ago parroting the same arguments people were making against the people critical of the game. Tropical Freeze also didn't have a press cycle that involved various interviews and some outlets kinda antagonizing the fanbase of the old series. Let's not forget the unforgettable "The feel of 60FPS." quote.

Yep definitely would have done better as a new game. Not sure why companies feel they need to rely on an old name when they're trying to reach a new audience to begin with.

Its a fun game, outside of the story which i thought was try hardy shit about "the man". It would have made a good new combat action IP under a different name.

As Devil may cry though...? LMAO, that's the entire reason it was not a success, they called it Devil May Cry. Its not a Devil May Cry game

It is a pretty good game, one of the better character action games made by a western dev imo.

I think a lot of the issues come out when you compare it to the previous entries in the series., but as I said, its a good game on its own merits.

This is awfully rich considering what you described is exactly what the core DMC did while this game was in development. You couldn't offer praise to this game without having hardcore DMC fans jumping down your throat while sending insults and hate messages to NT and Capcom about the game.

The whole situation was toxic, unfortunately. Which is why we're not getting a follow up, even when the initial game was a million seller and the DE outsold Capcom's sales expeditions.

it went both ways. NT and Capcom were constantly shitting on the old games and characters before launch.

Well it didn't help when the developers essentially mocked Japanese game design at every turn while expecting returning fans to like their new IP based on a Japanese franchise.

Those slides about gakt and brokeback mountain were some of the shittiest things i've ever seen

I actually am starting to remember this, when the first trailer showed people were livid about it and doing as you mentioned. It got to the point if I'm not mistaken that they buffed up Emo Dante a little bit more which pleased some people but still left the ones who hated the game since the first trailer with a sour taste in their mouth.

I prefer the camera/controls of DmC to those of DMC1-4.

The rest of the game is okay, but the combat is certainly not as interesting as DMC3/4 and the tone of the game is different from the series proper (which is fine, but may not be to individual taste).
