GAF Photography Thread of 2017

Must be years since I posted. Don't remember the last time I took a picture of anything that wasn't my boy. Managed to snap a couple decent pictures on vacation. One's the boy anyway—but I like it.

Both on iPhone 7 plus.

For some reason it's like thumbnails are being uploaded. I tried imgur and Flickr and the images are showing at lower resolution than on my phone. Do any image hosts offer compression free storage anymore?

Really dig this for some reason. The unconventional compositions really gives me the feeling of open air. Well done.
Thank you.

I think if I could change one thing it would be to get rid of that house in the background. Or maybe I should mute the house color a little.

One of my favorite photos of my pup (12 years old this year). I just feel like the house dirties up a great (to me) photo.

I'd be torn, spot removing some saturation on the house might help. Also, now that you have me staring at it: it seems ever so slightly tilted. Not sure if leveling it would make any impact.

I'd be torn, the house lets you know where the photo is taking place and makes me think of taking my dog for a walk on a nice breezy day. If it was a lower angle and the background was just trees and sky it could be anywhere. Which might make a better stock photo, but I like it how it is.

Always good to get a photo of your pet that represents them, I know how hard it is to get them to stay still long enough to experiment.

I recently managed to get hold of a very good value collection of Leica R-mount kit and I've decided to do some short reviews of each lens over in the photography equipment thread. It also gives me a good chance to actually post some photos up on this thread rather than hoarding them on my hard drive, so I'm going to be posting up some of the photos I've been taking to test out each lens with.

This first set was all taken on a Sony A7II with a Leica Vario-Elmar-R 35-70mm f/4 (link to my review):

Feels like the focus is just slightly off (maybe just motion blur at 1/400), but I love that shot of your cat.

HK seems like an absolute paradise for street photographers.

Love that Cab shot in particular, but I'm a sucker for evening/night shots with lots of lights.

Here's a crappy snapshot I took in Ginza a week ago. Nothing special, but I just love night shots :)

HK is great. Tons of colors and nooks and crannies. Just wish I had more time to explore. Was there for work and mostly was inside being lame. Almost 2 weeks there and only pulled my camera out twice.

Vern, my job just asked me if I'd be interested in working the three events we have in Asia in October. Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Shanghai. Never been to Asia before.. I'm most nervous about the flight time, I'm slightly nervous about my gear not making it out of China. Are these silly concerns?

I've never had a problem with flights personally. I just sleep and watch movies (and play Switch now wooo)... but I guess that's a personal thing if you can handle long flights or not.

Your gear is no problem. There might be problems with batteries depending on what you are carrying. China has lots of rules about batteries. I doubt your stuff will get stolen though. Welcome to Asia, ask your job if you can take a second cameraman/fixer for you.

Focus is definitely soft. It looks light back there but I was at 2000 ISO, had to push the Lightroom edit a little to get it light enough to be halfway happy.

And cats are fucking quick. I think we did 4 runs and this was the best of them. I definitely want to try it again further away from sunset, but still with longer shadows.

Not worried about theft, worried about customs. And the flights make me nervousbecause of my size... 6'7". Flying east coast to west coast of the U.S. is kind of my max. I'm told I should be able to book business class, but I'm not sure what that means as far as space concerns.

Business class will be no sweat on a long haul trip. Try to fly an Asian airline if possible. United/American/Delta are garbage, get on Cathay Pacific or Korean Air or something like that, depending where your first stop is. Customs I don't see why there would be any problem. Make sure your visas are in order.

A bit of a change of pace recently, with a bit of event work mixed in with some shots of a visiting aircraft carrier and a few other odds and ends. Banger race in just over a week, which should be good - I enjoyed shooting the rallying earlier in the year, and it should be nice and chaotic to photograph :)

Guys Guys...
I've got a small dilemma. Which camera should I buy?

The Canon M10 or the Sony ILCE5000L (A5000) ?

Maybe the lone shot I will have to share after a car issue sent my vacation crashing (not literally) into the ground. My car choked on the mountain roads after an issue with the air condenser caused an overheating loop in the blistering Black Hills sun.

Milky Way over Black Elk Peak by Tyler Jacobs, on Flickr

This was a lovely hike though. Black Elk Peak, threw down a tent near the summit and spent the night being barraged by some of the craziest winds I've ever experienced. The tent was game though, and help up just fine. Made the logistics of this shoot a lot harder though. Foreground and stars were shot about 5 hours apart (and about 3-5 feet apart -_-). Lot of Photoshop surgery on this one to make everything align properly.

Might need a touch up in a bit. There are a few rough spots to work out.

Cracking stuff folks!!

One more from me. Alaska, D700 & 28-300VR

I love this! The green of the water is striking.

Might get a few more bites in the official camera gear thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1165019

I am a lover of the Sony mirrorless stuff. However, I'd recommend spending a little more change to get a viewfinder (a used A6000 is a great camera and not too hard to find for a good price). I started out with the Sony NEX-5 which is a A5000 equivalent, and quickly found myself wanting something with a viewfinder.

Man, Lightroom CC's performance is really starting to get on my nerves. Sure, the RAW files I'm working with are pretty big (20 MB ~ 50 MB), but even with an i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz 16GB of RAM and a GTX 970 in my editing machine, the thing just regularly bogs down and shits the bed for tens of seconds at a time.

I'm seriously considering giving Capture One a try to see if it performs any better.

Maybe your files are on an external drive and the drive is too slow. Or, if they're on an internal drive maybe the drive has too much on it. Or, maybe your catalog is too large and you need to create a new one. Or, maybe you can clean your cache.

What's this about catalog being too large? I have never really bothered with that, but I should more granularly split up my photo collection into tons of small catalogs?

No idea. I don't know how many photos you have in your catalog. Without physically sitting at your computer all I can do is suggest a bunch of things. Maybe you need to run a directory cleaner like CCleaner a couple times and everything is like new again. Or maybe you have 10,000 photos in one catalog. I haven't got a clue.

I felt like my question was pretty general. I didn't realize catalog size could affect performance while developing photos. Seems pretty wacky if true, but is it generally recommended to keep catalogs as small as possible?

I had viewed catalogs more as photo collections rather than albums, but I'll give it a try and see if it helps performance at all.

Some people say it works for them, but I can't tell any difference personally.

I need some help to learn raw editing. Any good online tutorials?
With one of these: canon digital photo professional 4 and Lightroom.

I like the strong theme to your stuff. I can't help but cringe at the safe gun rule violation, though. Even though it's probably a prop (maybe?) and the camera could be on a tripod. I'm just not a huge fan of encouraging this kind of behavior to people. Sorry to be a downer. Great stuff otherwise!
