Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is up on US Netflix

Ehh. It's decent and enjoyable, if only for the action alone. Some of the action set pieces and space sequences were AMAZING, but aside from that, completely forgettable movie. I felt NOTHING when
the ensemble cast died (aside from the robot)
, and that's one of the biggest sins you could ever commit in a character driven series like Star Wars. Shame, cause the set up was actually pretty well done, but it suffers from the same tonal flatness and "oooh but we don't want our audience to FEEEEEL baaaad" attitude that people accuse Marvel movies of being.

Good film. The first act is a bit slow, but once it gets going there are some great set-pieces. Unlike a lot of people I liked most of the characters as well.

How's that? The entire main cast dies.

C- Movie

Some great scenes. Terrible movie.

Use Netflix to click through to the cool bits, because the characters/story are awful.

It's not even in "Trending" or "Recently Added" yet. But then again, it took Captain America: CW five months to show up in those categories.

Netflix getting movies like this and Civil War is ace.

While I didn't like R1 as much as TFA, I recognized the strong action sequences and admirable representation of ship designs. In general the cinematography was done well.

The only true problem with it is CG Tarkin and
CG Leia
. Crimes against humanity, those.

I wouldn't put R1 anywhere near the same category as CA:CW. Rouge One is more like Finding Dory. *gags* Which, imo, is just more crap on Netflix.

Sure it does. You kinda gotta watch a movie first before anyone gives a shit about your opinion on it.

And even then, results vary.

(I've seen a lot of movies and people tend to give only the slightest of fucks about 13.4 % of my opinions on them)

Glad to see you took something away from the boxing thread.

Oh shut up. It was overall great. It was how I remembered Star Wars as a kid, but updated for now. Fan service aside it's the Dirty Dozen of Star Wars films and we'll never get anything like it again.

We will almost assuredly get something like it again sooner or later on account of there being one Star Wars movie per year until the franchise is no longer popular, which should happen right around the time Hell freezes over.

I like it better than Force Awakens.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to shit on TFA, completely apropos of nothing. It’s like clockwork in RO threads.

Instead of defending RO on its own merits, it becomes “well I don’t like this other thing.” Who cares? Why is RO good in your opinion?

I swear, it’s like debating a Trump supporter before the election.

“Why do you like Trump?”

“Because Hillary sucks!”

“Right, but what’s good about Trump?”

“Lock her up! Lock her up!”

Saying RO is better than TFA isn't shitting on TFA. They can both be great but you like one a little more. Steak and pulled pork are both awesome but steak is better.

That analogy doesn't really work though.
The use of "I like X better than Y" in regards to games, movies, people, etc is used to discredit one while propping up another, without actually having a defense or points to back yourself up with.

Sure, but TFA isn’t part of the discussion. What’s the point in shitting on something else to try and uplift what you like?

I mean, in and of itself it’s nothing. But this happens every single RO thread. Literally every single one.

Third best SW film and I am not sure where the hate on gaf comes from, some would make you believe it is of prequel quality it seems.

It's a league above the prequels but it's a shit movie [edit: i take that back, it's not shit per se. It's just thoroughly mediocre]. Boring, two-dimensional (and often unlikeable) characters (funny robot aside), uninteresting execution of a potentially very interesting plot.

Nice music, beautiful cinematography, some great battle scenes. But I need compelling characters in my Star Wars.

It's definitely not better than any film in the OT and I would argue 7 is better simply for characters alone.

It's just natural to compare the two. I would say it's strange that some get so defensive about TFA.

Direction, acting, and cinematography put it well above the prequels.

But the characters are literally just a slight notch above. In the prequels, they’re one-dimensional cardboard cutouts dressed as clowns with murky motivations and give you little reason to care about whether they live or die.

Rogue One just removes the clown outfits.

It's a great movie. I cared more about these characters that any in the prequel trilogy. I went in with low expectations but was blown away by all of it.

The fact that the new doofus of a Darth Vader wannabe villain is not in it (he's not is he?) alone makes it eons better.

You read that right, but it doesn't matter. If Emo Darth Vader wannabe doofus is not in it than that alone makes it far better personally speaking.

Well of course but... i loathe LOATHE the new villain they introduced in TFA, so honestly not having him in Rogue One already makes it that much better than TFA for me.

I'm not sure why, but I kinda sorta get this feeling, you probably don't like Kylo Ren, maybe?

I really enjoyed seeing the iconic Rebel Alliance and Empire ships rendered with modern effects. Not sure how much of that we'll be seeing in the Han Solo spinoff.

It's more competently made then the prequels, which is the only thing I'll give it. It's a boring slog of a film that wasted a potentially interesting story line. I have no desire to watch it again as is. That being said, I hear the Rifftrax is pretty good, so I might buy that and then watch the movie on Netflix to see Mike, Bill, and Kevin riffing on it.

How's that? The entire main cast dies.

I can't remember who pointed this out, it might have Film Crit Hulk or Jenny Nicholson, but none of the characters actually have a tragic death. All of them basically end up dying on their own terms, closing their eyes peacefully before they go. The pilot guy, Donnie Yen, the friend of Donnie Yen, Cassian and Jyn all basically go out with a smile on their faces, having accomplished their goal. Nobody ends up cut down still having regrets.

They're the two most recent Star Wars movies in a decade. How could you not expect them to be compared?

movie was fine i just feel like it was C-tier among hypothetical ideas for the first standalone. maybe if this was like 5 or 10 years later i could get more jiggy with it

I'm glad if you enjoy the movie but I found it to be extremely boring. I was waiting for a reason for it to get exciting or giving me a reason to care about what happens to these characters. It never quite happened so it quickly became a slog of a movie to get though.

Once again, more power to you if you liked it, but I wouldn't touch it again anytime soon.

Why is the quality so terrible on this? Max bitrate is 1100; looks like watching a low res jpeg. Is this the max quality for this movie or is there something I'm missing?

edit: apparently have to watch on "Edge" instead of chrome..... what? Anyway it works, now bitrate is 4420.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Still not got round to watching it yet. Obviously won't be on UK Netflix either!

Though I refuse to believe that anything with Mads Mikkelsen in it could be bad.

Not only is it bad but there is not a single good performance in it.
