Games not known for their high difficulty you found surprisingly hard

Yeah, replaying that game kicked my ass

Not sure about the SNES version but the Genesis version throws so much random bullshit in that game it's hilarious. First-person section inside the claw machine? Done! Side scrolling shooter (without actually shooting). Done!

Yeah I should have clarified that most of the issues I have in that post are with the Genesis game. The SNES version has its problems too, but it's way easier overall. If I recall, you do start off with a continue in that game, and you even get passwords (except in the u.s. version). The claw boss fight doesn't have that wire that can hurt Woody, and the stars dropped in boss battles last way longer than the Genesis version.

Sadly, the whipping just does not register well in that game, and the lack of content, including pictures, songs, and the daytoyna level (the only one where RC controls decently) make it the weaker version for me.

State of Decay. The initial few hours are pretty casual then shit can and usually does go south fast. People start dying/disappearing/breaking down, resources become harder to manage as you build your base(s), good weapons can get scarce. And the hordes of enemies never decrease unless you've got shitloads of traps around the perimeters.

I found Bloodborne exceedingly hard the first few hours. Then I came to love it and was able to beat it comfortably.

I've only beaten Mega Man Legends and ZX... despite playing many. So I would say this series is way too hard for me. I just can't do platformers.

Also Castlevania The Dracula X Chonicles. I bought it so I could play Symphony of the Night again and holy shit, I can't even get to the part where you unlock it. Game is too hard for me. Once again... platformers.

Kirby's Epic Yarn is actually hard even if you cannot die.

No way. I perfected this game in like 10 hours with no guides or walkthrough. I loved it, but it's definitely so easy that I can understand people not playing it for more than a couple hours.

I came in to say exactly this. I was completely surprised by the hard difficulty.

Same, I played it on hard because I didn't want to play the "Baby" game on normal if it's for "babies." Man, Hard made me question my life. LOL

Crash 1 in remake is genuinly harder than original due to slightly off collision detection. Not an age thing.

Battlezone on PSVR is very much a roguelike in difficulty (and permadeath).

Farpoint on PSVR isn't a pushover despite FPS tunnel design.

The last boss in Bloodborne The Old Hunters on NG+. Tried for several hours across two days. Even with extensive co-op we didn't manage.

FTL is a hard roguelike but incredibly satisfying. Goty that year.

I got stuck on the "1st boss?" of the DLC, not sure. The horse face dude. NG+ is rough. Bloodborne was my first Souls game outside of Demon's Souls which I didn't play that much though, so I could just be bad.

Ori and the Blind Forrest.

I hope Ori 2 gets rid of those terrible "escape" sections. Took me days to beat because after wiping out so many times I was incapable of doing any better without taking a long break.

Pokemon. People always talk about how easy they are, but I always end up running into some really tough sections and struggling at parts. Maybe it's how I do my team (I just grab whatever pokemon I like the look of and want to see evolve, though I try to keep a spread of types) but I actually find the games on the more challenging side.

I get what you mean. The fact that so many Pokemon stat-wise are garbage compared to the others and it's not (or wasn't) easy to compare in-game meant that you could get yourself stuck in some spots until you found another Pokemon and power-leveled it up. Was really weird reading through a strategy guide for Crystal version and how its recommendations for playing the game were counter to basically everything I had done in the game.

The Rhythm Heaven games. I have the worst time with the offbeat mini-games (damn you clock monkeys). Though Megamix seems to be more forgiving.

When people name "HARD" games, nobody ever says Sonic Spinball. Yet nobody has ever beaten the damn game.

I have also beaten this. Great pick, it's pretty underrated. It is tough though.

I had to stop playing Ni No Kuni because I was getting my shit pushed in by basic mobs that were my level.

I'm certain I must have been doing something wrong, but I have no idea what. That, or the game just expects me to grind and grind and grind and grind and grind and grind.

And I don't fucking want to.

If you're wondering, I got to Castaway Cove. Sucks too, because I was enjoying the shit out of the world and story and exploration. Maybe one day I'll go back and try to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Also had to stop playing Xenoblade X after about 50 hours and right after getting my first Skell, because the gear/equipment system in that game gave me a headache as is- so many different kinds of gear, the weird license system that unlocks better gear as you increase certain manufacturer objectives, the amount of money I was spending on making sure my party had what I thought was good gear, but still trying to guess whether or not it even was good gear, etc. Once I got the Skell and realized that the exact same equipment system appeared to also apply to every single part of the Skell, and the thought of having to manage that shit for every part member some point.... nah, thanks, I'm out. I just want to play your goddamn game, so please make it simple. I don't want to spend hours in different menus, comparing numbers, and figuring out the exact thing I need.

Forgive me for saying something reductive but were you paying attention to the sun moon star Rock Paper Scissors mechanic with the familiars? I've been playing Ni no Kuni every night the past couple weeks and whenever my familiars are getting fucked up ill realize I'm fighting with the wrong one.

I like that people were complaining that "hard/hero" mode was locked behind DLC in BOTW before the game was released. There just never was a normal mode.

I can think of a couple licensed games that I played that were so simplistic that it made things difficult because I would be too advanced.

Not really sure how to clearly explain that but take Super Smash Bros, a game I find myself pretty good at. I can beat the computer at level 9 1 vs 2 and hold my own in a 1 vs 3, but sometimes I'll put them on level 4 or 5 and then actually struggle with them because they are so unpredictable and I end up trying a lot harder than I actually have to.

I've even lost a couple times...

I started paying the first couple of Phoenix Wright games, and they were harder than I expected. Game 1 case 5 and most of game 2 were pretty hard. It's not a very fun difficulty either, because when you lose you have to replay everything you did before.

Shovel Knight. It's regarded as an easy game, but I suck at it. I always thought I was good at platformers. I lose a ton of gold everytime I play. I probably am not patient enough with the bosses and just try to attack them without learning their attack patterns.

I consider Shovel Knight easy primarily because you don't really have to learn attack patterns in order to win. You can just use phase (the invincibility relic) so you can approach bosses easily without having to worry about dodging their attacks.

Of course that only works if you have enough magic. In general, I would say Shovel Knight get much easier the further you get into it, because you can upgrade your magic more and more. The relics are overpowered, so if you have enough magic to spam them carelessly, the game becomes pretty easy. The game is harder at the beginning, when you don't have a lot of upgrades.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
BotW is that game for me at the moment. I played about an hour and half, and just quit. It sucks because I'm see the stuff my buddy who beat the game has, and I want all of that, but the game is way too frustrating for me.

Mega Man Zero games; They always put a huge wall at the end of the games as you always had to fight nearly all the bosses before facing the last boss. You had to be on absolute fucking point to get through all the bosses and hopefully have your back health tanks full or at least at a decent level for the final boss(es)

I don't know think most people are parrying guardians, let alone near perfectly. You've got some skills man!

It's way easier than bb or souls though. Getting the guardians down gets pretty easy. The shrine combat guardians are much harder. The lionels though I stay the fuck away from. Too much of a time suck and weapon breaker.

I had no idea this was a thing. I'm a big silly billy.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. These games are underrated in my opinion and Superstar Saga ( the 1st one) really wasn't a challenge until the end boss. This game kicked my butt with a hour long boss fight against a literal volcano that made me rage quit a few times. Later on in the game having consistently perfect timing on attacks and counterattacks is absolutely crucial. It's not unbearably hard, but I didn't expect it to provide as big of a challenge as it does.

I find 2D Mario games basically impossible. I didn't grow up playing 2D games, so I guess I just don't have the chops, and these days I have too many other games competing for my attention to bother putting in the time to learn. I'll get a few levels in and then get too frustrated at the instant deaths to continue.

Newer 2D games don't give me the same trouble, though. I loved Guacamelee and Ori and the Blind Forest, for instance, so I guess the difference for me is mostly in the checkpointing. If I can retry something instantly I'll stick with it, but if I have to do the whole level over again I just move on.

I never did get past the first colossus in Shadow of the Colossus despite coming back to the game a few times.

I stopped playing Batman Origins because I just couldn't beat Copperhead.

I also couldn't beat the final boss of Borderland the Pre-Sequel.

I found the first difficulty spike in Mega Man Battle Network to be impossible. I was loving the game and then couldn't get through standard battles

Sky Crawlers I thought was considered a bit easy but I kept getting stuck not being able to finish missions in time. Part was just me having fun flying around but a couple missions forced you to use a plane with terrible maneuverability and then maneuver to take down a set number of planes in a certain time. I checked what faqs I could find but they simply said what order to take down planes which I already knew. I eventually quit.

I don't know think most people are parrying guardians, let alone near perfectly. You've got some skills man!

Oddly enough once I learned about parrying guardian lasers I did it spot on the first 2 times I tried. Haven't been able to do it in the 12 or so times since.

The ease comes from making use of the ample health potions and the cheap invincibility item. Most of the bosses can be beaten by a simple cycle of using invincibility and then attacking them until a potion is needed whereupon you start the cycle over. The later levels require actual platforming skill and the last boss requires both that and pattern recognition (
in its first form at least
).

Save for one time, I couldn't turn a profit on Planet Coaster's free mode on Normal. About a dozen structures in and I was deadlocked.

Not "hard" per se, but my dumb ass found the combat in Xenoblade Chronicles to be utterly incomprehensible. I could mash my way through the first few hours but I had to throw the towel in (despite loving the story) once the fights started getting serious.

As someone who has been playing both FPS and RPGs for several decades Mass Effect is the only game I've ever had to turn the difficulty down to easy in order to beat it.

Crash 1? It's kicking all our asses.
LOL I would have definitely known better had I played more of this game back in the day, so I thought it was going to be a pretty simple romp. By the time I had game over'd for like the 5th time on Native Fortress, I knew I had underestimated it. And by the time I got to Road to Nowhere, this was in my estimation, as they say, the Dark Souls of 3D platformers.

And yes, Kingdom Hearts. It was the only time I had to use a cheat disc to get through a game 2 gens ago.

Demon's Souls, not that it's not considered a hard game, but a lot of people say it's easier than Dark Souls, which I beat without much difficulty. So i played Demon's Souls and found it much harder than Dark Souls due to the scarcity of checkpoints, it's a very punishing game

everybody thinks Super Castlevania IV is a relatively easy Castlevania game but I found it very frustrating and difficult. Meanwhile I thought Dracula X wasn't too hard at all outside of the troll ass last boss...which still gave me less trouble than SCIV's Death. I guess I just couldn't wrap my head around the way it played.

I came here to post this. I love a lot of things about Super Castlevania IV but the game just kept giving me a lot of trouble back in the day...even during the early stages.

Ori was tough but didn't bug me too much.
Wolfenstein: the New Order gave me a lot of problems.
This is it, nobody ever talks about it but the new order kicked my ass, had a much easier time with the old blood.

The final boss of TNO is complete bs

Really would appreciate a PC port of the GOTY version of State of Decay. Want to play the game but I've no interest in an Xbox one.

I had no issues with TNO (though London Monitor was annoying) but Old Blood's the goddamn final boss... Took me forever to get the routine down.

Never noticed anyone say how hard Prey was. You turn a corner without thinking in that game and you're either dead or you blew all your resources. It feels very rewarding when you overcome a combat scenario though.

I beat the old blood boss on the second try lol, meanwhile for TNO I just turned it down to easy for the final boss and it still took me 2 or more tries

Right there with you on this. I tried playing Super Mario Bros. a little while back because I thought I was the only one in the world that hadn't. Even using save states a little, I think I gave up after world 3.

Recently I beat Shovel Knight, but it was an extremely brutal experience for me. Same for Hollow Knight (regular ending). I found Ori a lot less frustrating due to the save system.

Darkest Dungeon, I know the game is considered a hard one, but I just die even on the easiest difficulty, no matter how much I read about the game, how handy the wiki is, I just explode and never got past hard dungeons.

It is most certainly considered a very hard game. Especially the DLC. I knew this going in and it was so horribly frustrating. I think the OP is talking about games that are considered more casual or "normal" in difficulty.

I thought parappa was really hard but then I saw my friends play it and they all breezed through. And it turns out I was just bad at rythm games. And I still am. They are all pretty hard for me.
