Nu-metal that didn't suck?

Reveille (now Genuflect) is/was pretty good.
Love these guys. I saw them so many times and got a few black eyes and lumps from the pit. Are you from New England by any chance? I've wondered how far their fanbase was spread as I pictured them as more of a semi-big local band for the NE area lol.

I remember first hearing them on the radio and thinking it was new RATM lol.

Primer 55 was another band I liked.

In some ways Numetal gets more shit than "cock rock" ever did. People still respect the likes of Guns N Roses.

I think the only genre of the heavy metal family tree that doesn't get much grief is Grunge. And that's just the first wave, not the fucking Creeds of the world.

Almost ever genre of metal I like is reviled, and at the least..ignored.

Hair Metal is maybe just as bad. It's such trash lol, even GnR.

As for grungewave, this pretty much covers it:

Very sad that Wayne Static died.

Wow, I totally forgot he died. RIP

I watched that live on TV. It was fucking crazy. Damn shameful what happened.

I was there. It was only insanely crazy in a couple of spots, the rest of the crowd was pretty much your typical mosh pit crowd. It was a real shame what happened there since 99% of the people at the show were just there enjoying the music (and eating $8 sliced turkey on hotdog buns).

Deaftones and Rage Against the Machine are legitimately good.

I still like a ton of other Nu-Metal bands, but I accept that it's not "good" music. It's just fun music.

i am a firm believer there is good music in every genre

nu metal may be the exception

Yeah, the only reason I'd revisit the genre is purely nostalgia. I can't think of anything that holds up. Except maybe Limp Bizkit & Method Man's N 2 Gether, solely for the production. And Method Man's verses. Love that piano/string sample.

edit: Wow is that Pauly Shore as the pizza man? Jesus, even back in '99 they were behind the times.

The only Fear Factory album that got remotely close to "nu metal" was Digimortal.

Incidentally it's commonly considered the black sheep of their entire discography.

It depends on if they have to still be considered nu-metal. If not, then:

Machine Head
Deftones
Fear Factory (never really nu-metal tho)

Incubus S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is a 10 out of 10 album.

Incubus was never nu-metal. I'd call them prog rock before I called them that. But S.C.I.E.N.C.E is incredible.

Digimortal is their most nu-metal offering, but I am deeply offended by people who don't like it.

Linchpin and Invisible Wounds especially are A+

My god. Wasn't water also stupid expensive? I remember MTV running for their lives.

I thought Kid Rock was country

Not originally.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Is Kid Rock Nu Metal? I mean yeah, it's not just about that.

In retrospect no. I mean he clearly did the rap rock thing, but that was at a time when a lot of white middle America got into the rap game. Then he has just slowly morphed into some modern day form of "southern" rock (though he's from the mid west).

never left the stone age
I will always love their 2nd album - The Height of Callousness. It was their most aggressive and heavy sound, their fastest and most creative set of songs and just intense from the start. They were one of my gateway bands that got me into heavier stuff. Silent Civilians two albums are good too, but it's a shame the latest Spineshank album was so bad. I never liked the first album much either. Regardless, glad to see others had fond memories.

Wait, Height of Calloussness is their second album? Then it's the second album I love

Rage aren't nu metal.
Rage, no.
RATM, yes.
;)

Also, is Sepultura considered Nu-Metal?
Some later Sepultura, yes. They really turned to shite.

But they were essential a thrash pseudo death metal band before that.
????

Pantera obviously also had a HUGE influence on NuMetal even though they are Thrash/Groove metal.
Pantera is NOT Nu Metal.
Indeed not. They weren't thrash either. They were always groove metal (well OK, they were glam/trad heavy metal early on, before they started sucking :D). But their tough guy bro metal shite with jumpdafuckup "riffs" and barked vocals was a huge influence on nu-metal, I'd almost consider them as such.

I miss Glamtera...

Pretty much everything about nu-metal makes me break out in hives. Do not want.

I like maybe one or two Sevendust songs if they count.

I know one of the biggest reasons NuMetal got crapped on by the metal community was "lack of musicianship" and "melody." Most of them couldn't play a solo if their life dependent on it. Winger probably had more guitar playing talent than every NuMetal band that ever existed. It sounds like I am joking but nope.

Saying that, I still like certain bands of the genre and I'm ok with stuff being different.

The end all and be all of the genre, as far as I'm concerned.

This is literally one of the best albums ever made. Incredibly well crafted. I still listen to it regularly.

Incubus, Breaking Benjamin, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Taproot, SOAD, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson and Linking Park were all good with their first 2, 3 albums.

Deftones were and still are excellent, they were the only ones that really improved over time imo.

Haven't seen anyone mention Otep.

Blood Pigs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B56J4v8MWPw
Confrontation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D79peD6i-rw
Rise, rebel, Resist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPVUz839V0g

I still dig this tbh, it was also the first female vocalist i heard in nu-metal, Rise rebel Resist is so fucking intense still.

No mentions because Otep are not nu-metal. Listen to Blood Pigs again.. that's fucking metal metal.

Edit: well, I guess any kinda rap metal can get lumped in with nu-metal... I'll allow it.

They were also really good live back in 05. House of Secrets tour was intense.

I'll go with SOAD too (as someone who grew up with the stuff, being 15 at the turn of the century).

Korn and a couple of other bands have their place too and they sound great to dance too on the odd night out but I wouldn't really listen to their music outside of that.

System of a Down, early Korn, and some Incubus. I frankly love all Incubus, but from like 2006 onward, most of their music is pretty bad.

Honestly, I think Byte Block might be the best song on that album. Damn it's good.

I didn't put to much thought into what category. Digimortal fell into. To me it was another Fear Factory album. I remember listening to it a lot.

Obsolete is my favorite. Even the packaging was awesome.

Breaking Benjamin has some decent music, majority of their well known songs come from Phobia.

Tool is often considered one of the first major nu metal bands, though they are a good example of why the label isn't very good.

Deftones are amazing.

System of a Down is held in high regard, though I personally can't listen to it anymore.

RED has some pretty decent suff. Atilitas Way as well.

Chevelle is Imo one of the best nu metal bands out there. Very much like Tool, no corny lyrics, etc.

And finally 10 Years is a very similar band to Tool/Chevelle.

I would classify 'nu-metal' to be a mix of the following:

- simple pop songstructures
- often a catchy chorus
- (relatively) simple staccato guitar riffs, a lot of down tuned guitars
- mix of angry & clean vocals

with some added:
- electronics (dj, soundscapes, samples, or keys)
- rap/hiphop influenced vocals
- #angst and #edge
- optional: a 'gimmick'.

Ill Nino would be a good example of the above. Or one of my personal favorites; One Minute Silence.

The very first Sepultura album was like early death metal. I'm not saying it was Morbid Angel, but it's not a crazy statement.
Please don't cite Wikipedia >_<
But yeah it was the "pseudo" part that baffled me. Sepultura weren't "thrash/pseudo death", they were thrash/death, period. :)

No mentions because Otep are not nu-metal. Listen to Blood Pigs again.. that's fucking metal metal.
But they're more extreme metal.
...No
