I was lucky enough to get a Switch and it doesn't even work properly.

OP, I feel you, take a deep breath.

Have you tried a different tv/monitor and a different HDMI cable? I mean, calling Nintendo's good, but try that first, if you haven't already.

Every piece of hardware has failure rates, if you bought a 360 at launch you already danced with fate on failure rates lol

Me and my friends had a Switch day one with no issues
Yeah true, I went through several 360's during that time lol. I'll probably pick up a Switch anyway once I can find one in GameStop. I have like $500 ready from the recent trade-ins.

How old are you to not know how store returns work?

Also, does Nintendo at least pay for shipping? My screen kind of pops out and I was considering a repair

In the amount of time it took you to be an angry little man on the internet, you could have called Nintendo and they'd have you troubleshooting and/or outright replacing the console. Chill, dude.

2 360s and 1 PS3 from me last gen. I think that's what made me stop caring lol

If you haven't figured it out from all the comments yet

- Relax
- Call Nintendo Customer Support
- Bro relaaaaax :p These things happen and, while they can be frustrating, are mostly easy fixes for Nintendo.

Hey OP, do you have any friends, relatives nearby with the Switch and a dock? Easiest way to isolate the issue is to grab a buddy and pop it into another dock.

Yeah, I suggested buying an easily returnable spare dock, but this would also be a good route to go just to isolate whether it's the system itself or the dock.

Please someone tell me there's a fix to this and I'm just being over dramatic.

I don't even know if you can return shit like this back to Walmart.

You can return a frozen pizza as a turd to Walmart if you bitch about it enough. I'd say you are definitely being over dramatic.

Because of helpful posts like this:

Very helpful! Surprise, he asked the support and get it repaired by Nintendo. Who had thought of such an unlikely method for a faulty device?

Next thread should be about how to use a phone and contact support. ;)

And I bump this thread up with every post too, seems I am part of the problem 😎

Oh wait, actually... You should totally test out your joycons and make sure the left one has good range and doesn't disconnect or struggle to connect. You can do this in tabletop mode.

I would hate for you to get the system repaired only to discover the annoying joycon issue.

Yeah, I suggested buying an easily returnable spare dock, but this would also be a good route to go just to isolate whether it's the system itself or the dock.

But...given just how expensive the dock itself is. Not everyone can just get up and go get a spare dock. That is a lot of run around, time spent, gas used for something that may-or-may not be related to the problem. Sure, it can be returned, it's still a lot of running around to try and solve a problem that may not exist.

At this point we're just pulling at strings, the OP would need to higher educate us on what the CS agent told them over the phone, in regards to the issue they encountered. We're not right next to him so all we can do is guess work.

But why would he do any of this?
Actual solution:
- Send both dock and console to Nintendo, Nintendo figures out which thing is broken, Nintendo fixes or replaces thing, working console at OP's home in a few days, the end

CS only asked for the console and Joy-cons, not the dock.

I wouldn't do that either. If it's a system that's broken out of the box, it goes back to the store. I'm not taking chances with a possibly refurbished unit.

Wait, so they wouldn't give me my exact system?

I'm assuming he doesn't want to deal with having to wait for the store to get stock again

This too, yesterday was the second time I've seen the Switch in person at a store.

OP, I feel you, take a deep breath.

Have you tried a different tv/monitor and a different HDMI cable? I mean, calling Nintendo's good, but try that first, if you haven't already.

I will try that in a few hours.

Hey OP, do you have any friends, relatives nearby with the Switch and a dock? Easiest way to isolate the issue is to grab a buddy and pop it into another dock.

Nope, closest friend with a Switch lives hundreds of miles away. Next closest friend with a Switch lives in another state.

lmao, just saw your post in the stock situation thread, I was gonna tell you to return it. Personally, I still would. I got a Switch a couple weeks ago from one of those Gamestop bundles, and it had dust under the screen. I thought I might get a whole new unit back if I sent it to Nintendo (based on some other posts I saw on this forum), but I got the same one back. I could tell where the repair tech had pried the screen off cause he left a nice indentation and rubbed off the finish. Back had some surface scratches too. Keep in mind this was a brand new unit that I took out of the plastic, turned on, saw the dust, put back in the bag and left there til I called Nintendo + shipped it. I was not pleased.

A lot of people think you're overreacting, but I get you. This is a console that sells out immediately, so you don't really get the luxury of being picky with your unit when you find one in store. It's also a $300 console that's defective out of the box. You have the right to be upset. Return that shit fam; Walmart is pretty loose with their returns.

Wait, so they wouldn't give me my exact system?

No way to know for sure

You are def. being a bit over dramatic - worst case scenario would be sending the unit to Nintendo for them to fix/replace it for you.

Or at least contact the CS if GAF cant help you - maybe its a known issue.

I think he's being the exact right amount of dramatic. It sounds like he has been trying to get a unit for some time, and having a serious issue like this upon setting it up would really suck.

Doing a return at Walmart for an item with no stock mean having the funds returned, so he's back to having to wait for a switch again.

You could buy an extra dock and test if everything is ok, then return the bad dock as defective, or just make sure that everything is plugged the right way, maybe it is a cable that is defective.

I was lucky enough to get a Switch yesterday at Walmart. Including the one I bought, all 5 Switches at Walmart were bought up in 3 minutes.

I finally opened it up today cause I got some games for it and it doesn't fucking work in docked mode. It froze numerous times, the UI is completely unresponsive and the image quality looks dreadful. It's literally unplayable in docked mode.

In portable it works perfectly. There's no issues with slow down, it looks great, sounds great all that. The system is fully updated as well.

This is such bullshit. I finally get lucky enough to find one in the wild just for it not to work. I bought it to be a console not a handheld and now I'm out 300 fucking dollars for something broken out of the box.

Please someone tell me there's a fix to this and I'm just being over dramatic. I don't even know if you can return shit like this back to Walmart. And even if I can then I got to hope and pray that I see another Switch in the wild again.

You are definitely being over dramatic, contact nintendo. You are under warranty.

Sure. Everybody is different. I'm not saying that this is the solution. I'm just saying it's a possible idea that can rule out a potential problem if you are desperate to not be without the system for a week or two.

You've never had to return anything? Are you like 8 years old OP or just very lucky?

You'll be just fine.

What do you mean by "image quality looks dreadful"? The switch UI is stuck at 720p at the moment, even in docked mode. Could that be what you are seeing (other than the freezing)?

Walmart will refund you in full if it's defective. I had to do it twice because Nintendo quoted me at four+ weeks return time and that was stupid. I literally just refunded and bought another one. Replacement joycons took weeks as well.

For what it's worth, the default settings my newer TV used when I first plugged in the Switch were absolutely dreadful (both bad picture/color quality and bad latency), but a quick config in my display settings and it looks much better now.

Except someone pointed out the low-res home menu a while back and now I can't unsee it

I'm on hold right now as CS files the repair claim. He said it will take 3-4 weeks, really hope that isn't the actual time frame. I was so excited to play the damn thing.

Just FYI, I was quoted 2-3 weeks on total repair time, but I just got an email a few moments ago that said they're already done with the repair and are shipping it back to me. They received the unit yesterday and I should expect it back by tomorrow night, so the turnaround was way quicker than I thought it would be. Your results may vary of course.

I see no reason why Walmart would not take it back. They sold you a defective product.

The last thing I'd do is return the Switch there, because they wouldn't have a replacement, and he'd be out a Switch. He has the system, which is the hard part. Send it into Nintendo for a repair, or go with the mod's suggestion of buying a dock to test.
If that were the issue and there's no serial number on it, I'd return the defective dock. I know it's the dick move, but let the poor guy enjoy his Switch. Best Buy's just going to return the defective dock anyway.

There were jaggies everywhere and image looked blurred. Little to sound was playing as well.

So you can guys can see what I'm talking about. Sorry for the shitty camera work I was recording off my S7 with one hand. But you can see the lag, the blurred image and unresponsiveness. And you can see how it works perfectly undocked. This video can only be seen with this link.

looks like your tv or the dock is cutting the refresh rate in half

try changing hdmi ports, cables and try a different tv before sending the switch back

Sorry you're having problems, OP. Sucks to get something you've waited ages for just to end up defective. I actually had problems with my Switch seemingly overheating in docked mode. The sky and other reflective surfaces would turn purple in all my games. I was dreading having to send it in to get repaired. Luckily, one morning the problems went away and I havent had an issue since. May have been a firmware update, don't remember.

That seems weird enough to me to be worth experimenting on. Have you tried the dock on any other TV's? Otherwise, return it or file a repair claim to Nintendo.

Tried it with my Wii U HDMI and I tried it on a different TV, same results. Guess I have no choice but to send it in.

I dont Have a Switch yet, but is there like a TV output resolution in the settings or something? Or maybe the Switch isn't properly seated in the dock? Just my 2 cents
