Millennial Average Median Income Per State

I mean, I believe it. I have a masters and I recently managed to get my job to go full time for the entire year and I'm barely above average in my state. And other people with a masters (or more) are applying for a comparable position at my workplace, so I'm not the only one.

Being a plumber, electrician and welder are all lucrative trades. Lots of politics involved but if you become a licensed electrician you are practically guaranteed a 6 figure job. I know master plumbers, running their own business, who make more than doctors and lawyers.

I had an opportunity to be an apprentice under a master plumber when I was about 18-19. He was a friend of a friend's family. I was on vacation with them, this guy knew that I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do in life, and offered this to me. Would have been able to rent a room (basically a mother in-law suite) at his family's house in upper NY for a song, and work and save money.

But, I was brought up to believe that if you didn't go to college, you'll be poor for the rest of your life. ...My how things have changed.

I do okay in my career (37 yrs old now)...but not a week goes by where I don't think about how I'd be doing if I took the guy up on his offer.

I mean, at this point, what even are options for high paying work? It feels like there's almost no real opportunities unless you're in engineering or IT or something like that

Public safety/health careers pay well and they always need people. However, most people just don't want to do it. They either can't or don't want to handle the stress that is involved with these positions.

Perhaps it's time to forcibly remove Baby Boomers from all positions in society.

Don't worry guys. Just stay the course. Appeal to old suburban republicans in 2018. Young people don't vote and don't matter. They are totally fine and just a bunch of lazy fucks. It's not like they have been justifiably disallusioned and need some sort of ray of hope or anything. They just suck and eat too much avacado toast. Get and line and vote D regardless of whatever corrupt shit heads the party puts out. Please be excited.

Congrats, now you know what it feels like being a black/minority voter from 1870* to 2017. Cry less

*That's when we were "allowed" to vote, but really didn't kick off until 1964. Why? Because this country ain't shit

I can handle them, but yeah, I don't like doing them. I've always wanted to do something in education or the arts, and that's why I chose English in college. I've liked teaching ESL abroad and I'm sure I'll like it in Korea, too, but it feels like the money just isn't there. And the arts seem impenetrable with any real money going to the top, but that is diminishing quickly. Oh well, there is always suicide, I guess, that's sort of where the train stops when there's no more rails.

I never thought about doing the trades myself. Always wanted to do research, eventually ended up doing law but finding out that being a tradesmen is a pretty lucrative career path makes me wonder why we push college for everyone.

Just another reminder that I make 10.79 an hour and have no idea what career I want to switch to so I can move out without worry.

Well at least you all got trophies as kids amirite?

You know, is this like a real thing that happened at schools? Because I never got a participation trophy or medal or anything at my school. Well, I think maybe I got one for being on the Basketball team, but it wasn't really an award, it was almost like class ring type of thing, like you were part of this class of the basketball team. There was actual like award trophies and not everyone got one.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Trade work is in demand. I mentioned earlier that I have a friend who does welding and its very in demand. He actually turns down jobs offering $30 an hour because he has even better paying gigs. Hell being a garbage man can pay 6 figures in cities.

I told someone that where I'm from you can buy a nice newish house with a pool in the backyard for like $120k and there are plenty available because people couldn't afford them. They didn't believe me. I should show them this. People are leaving, no one is replacing them, and those who stay can only afford to eat.

I wasn't trying to suggest anything otherwise or downplay what this country has done to minorities. Millennial voters include every minority demographic as well, but there was a drop off in millennial black turnout in places where older black voters mostly maintained.. I think the decrease in turnout and even the increase in third party voters amongst minorities is something we need to be looking at as well. I know there has been a lot of racial tension since the primary and some people on the left saying "don't talk about minority issues so much", but they are totally wrong. Hillary in the general election barely did it at all I think that is one reason why her numbers dropped. Instead of making appeals like she did in the primary she chased surburban republican moms, which was stupid as hell.

I was only making a joke playing up how I believe that there are still people in the party who think a better plan is to appeal to older voters who apparently don't view Trump's blatant racism as a disqualifier as if there is any chance of reaching across like that any more than recapture some young disillusioned voters who didn't turn out at all. My apologies if it came off differently.

So DC is the place to be?

Hooray for big government!

DC is often included in state-to-state comparisons but it's a city. Population density, crime rate, doctors per capita, and other measures will look extremely high in comparison to other states but not necessarily compared to other cities. Such is the same with average salary I imagine.

I think the idea that you "have" to go to college is just pretty well ingrained into our belief system now. Not long ago, tradespeople were a dime a dozen, because people with college degrees were rare. Now, boomers are retiring, young people are going to school more, and you have a shortage of workers in the trades.

That said, one should definitely do one or the other. It's going to be very tough to make it without either a degree or knowing a skill.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
umm ... well I guess I shouldn't be complaining about my salary for a bit... I'm easily making much higher than any of those, even DC.

....that's not good at all. The system is not kind to us at all.

Millennials are the first generation in human history where their level of education greatly exceeds where the majority land, employment-wise.

Not good is calling it nicely. How about a breakdown of the entire system as the gears grind hard?

This makes me feel worse than I already do. I'm nowhere near 20,000 even on a good year. I feel so sad and desperate now being jobless off and on. I'm just tired of playing this game hoping that someone will call me for an interview and if they accept me. Sometimes I cry because I feel like I'm never going to amount to shit.

I mean, I know plenty of people who are working part time jobs, or not at all, or decided to go back to school because of lack of job opportunities. I'm about to turn 30.

This doesn't surprise me much at all.

Now imagine what happens in 20 years when this generation hasn't gotten any kind of raise or economic leg up from this level of widespread poverty. When they start to hit middle age and a massive amount of people without any savings start to need major medical care, we'll get to watch the all of America's medical infrastructure implode in on itself. We are going to have an economic collapse in this country in our lifetimes that will make the Great Depression seem like a golden age.

This is assuming they don't lose their jobs to technology...which is likely.

Many work in services. This "branch" of work is where automation is evolving right now.

i am below the average because I am part time
if i was full time at my job I would be barely above the average

my wife is well above the average at least.

So what does a young person do for a livable wage? I'm not even talking about 60-70k, even 40k would be amazing. Enough for a small apartment and drinking money.

It seems that without connections, the only reliable routes are CS, nursing, and trades. I'm rubbish at math, dislike hospitals, and I can barely hold a screwdriver correctly.

I'd love to get my master's degree in museum studies, but lord knows there are too many of those walking around.

Actually I was assuming that. I also imagine that with the widespread adoption of automation in all industries, the value of human labor will be close to zero in our time. I'd actually expect the Millennial's median income to decrease as time goes on.

Hey I'm above the highest average! Nice! I still FEEL poor, though.

To be fair though (and I'm sure this has probably been said before) but most milennials are probably still early in their careers, working entry-level jobs or internships, and taking things slower than usual due to increasing student debt and all general debt. No surprise the averages are pretty low. It'd be a lot more telling if they did the survey in ten years and the averages didn't go up.

WOAH.

How are they sourcing this information?

That seems incredibly low... I am doing way too good in comparison. I had no idea it was this bad.

I mean, I knew that it was bad, but this is bad.

They're using the ACS and are looking at the income from people as young as college-aged (easily bringing the average down).
