Article Two, Section 1 of the United States Constitution sets forth the eligibility requirements for serving as President of the United States:

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

It was a rhetorical question.

haha. ok?

I think there might be a superseding rule where the Prez has to be, you know, American. way to miss the point though.

Trudeau is a lovely hood ornament and I think a pretty good guy but so far his actual legislative accomplishments leave a lot to be desired. he backtracked on voting reform and hasn't said shit about C-51. the pot thing is going forward so that's good but apart from being very Instagrammable he's kind of a disappointing leader on a wonky level.

I always thought this was rather limiting though to be honest..... do other countries have this rule that you have to be natural born

Bruh.

my American friends constantly chide me for criticizing Trudeau on Twitter, with this sort of you think you've got things bad sort of way... which I get, Trump is a maniac, but I don't see why Canadians should lower our standards just because an orange lump of hate got elected south of the border.

Trudeau seems like a normal, good hearted person though

He's as good of a PM as I've ever been old enough to vote for. I generally appreciate that there is no way he can fulfill every promise he made, nor have the promises he's been unable to fulfill made me particularly upset.

He gets a good amount of heat, but I think in the way that some people give ANYONE in power a good amount of heat, to hold them to the highest possible standard.

I think he's good, and I think he's getting better. Overall really happy with him as PM.

What has Trudeau done that has negatively affected Canada thus far?

Yeah he is. He seems like a really good guy.

I don't like the liberal party much though. they have problems with graft and tend to just go whichever way the wind is blowing.

Well like I said upthread, support for C-51, and backtracking on voting reform, are not great. But if you want to lay that at the feet of the party rather than the leader... sure.

I do enjoy his celebrity and sensitivity though, after the trash fire that was Stephen Harper, and the dumpster fire that was Rob Ford (i'm in Toronto).

Because he is a Canadian born pinko commie. He's not allowed to be president here. Seriously though I know some conservatives that actually are making an argument that Canada is turning into Nazi Germany. I have to roll my eyes so far back in my head it takes an hour for my vision to fully return.

He talks about steps taken to deal with the opioid crisis and mentions the country's dropping unemployment rate. He uses the original Clintonian recipe on the crowd: "We're focused on getting people into good careers and helping families get ahead and stay ahead," he says. "But we know there's more hard work in front of us than there is behind us."

Then he gives the press corps a high-five.

"The back and forth between the press and government is essential to any good democracy," he says. "When you're at your best, it reminds us and challenges us to be at ours. So thank you all for your tireless work."
Stating this would normally be fluff in the western world.

If we annexed Canada there is an argument that all natural born Canadian citizens would become natural born American citizens due to being natives of a territory that became a state. Therefore Justin could be President.

Oh please.... we all know he'd be a part of La Resistance.

Trudeau is great. Most of the hate is coming from idiots who miss Harper.

Election reform is the only thing I really criticize him for.

Trudeau is a great PM, and he's getting a lot done.

Huge progress in climate change, immigration, science and tech, transparency and inclusivity etc.

The detractors need to pay attention to more than 1 liner news headlines. And the conservatives...well theres no hope if you think Harper was better in any way.

Yup - and I say that being fairly content with Trudeau in light of Trump.

Negative or positive. Say what you will about Trudeau but a lump of fucking coal as president is a better option than fucking Harper.

Prime Minister, but yeah. Trudeau is alright, although I didn't vote for him—but I thank God every day the dark ages under Harper are over.

After port begging, we now have head-of-state begging. That's quite a whiny title from RS. And there are probably better candidates out there.

Also, for the next year or so, poor Trudeau will have to deal with "If the prime minister wasn't so busy playing rock star on the cover of magazines, maybe he would have realized that the hard working men and women of [insert city/province] are struggling because of the policies his government has put in place".

The anglosphere* is getting properly shown up by the hated francophones recently.

*for the purposes of this comment Canada is not in the anglosphere. Thanks.

Well, for obvious reasons he can't be our president, but I wouldn't mind someone like him. Younger, mainstream progressive with a congenial attitude. Seth Moulton out of Massachusetts seems close, and he's taking a very visible role as of late in the Democratic party. Not that he'd be a candidate for 2020 or maybe even 2024, but if he's still a public figure by 2024, then I think he'd be being groomed for a run.

To be honest, though, I don't know much about Trudeau. I like his charisma and personality from clips I've seen of him on TV, but when it comes to Canadian politics, I don't know much about it.
