Football Thread 2016/17 & Offseason |OT2| Wenger In Fam! Wenger Out Blud!

Still really crap for a player if they want to be gone and forced to stay. Its very rare for a player to stay at the top of their game in those circumstances. Especially if they have agreed terms with another club.

The only time I have ever seen that situation work out well (that I can remember) was the case of de Gea where the deal failed to go through on time. But the rumours of him leaving have never stopped.

You see this is what I don't understand about players. Why sign a 5+ year contract if you know for a fact you don't want to stay at the club? Virgil and Coutinho both signed contracts keeping them at their clubs until 2022, so why sign if you know you didn't want to stay at the club. Makes no sense to me.

Phil may well end up leaving but that celebration was fairly standard for him. He barely ever smiles and isn't naturally expressive, at all.

He does celebrate but very rarely like you said.

Improved wages, re-signing bonus, etc.

Payet got a million pound loyalty bonus off us for not leaving during the Summer transfer window with his contract extension and left 5 months later.

5 years is less to do with a player choice and more of a clubs choice, unless the player is old five years is the standard deal. With a four or five year contract it means they have better negotiating power when it comes to transfers. It drives the price up and places the employment club in the seat of control. As contracts aren't servitude a player knows that a club can not keep them if they don't want to be there and they can get loyalty bonuses on longer contracts.

but the amount of money you'd get to reinvest in the squad would be great. Is Coutinho leaving the end of the world with Mane, Firmino, Salah, Sturridge, Lallana, Origi...?

Arguably Coutinho makes those players better seeing as he creates chances for them too. Last time we made the CL and sold our best player before it we ended up sacking the manager. Plus they're offering £80mill and nowadays you'd not easily find a replacement at the level of Coutinho for similar amounts - I'd say he's worth more like £130m if Neymar is at £200m odd.

I think we could persuade Coutinho to stay another year with a promise to let him go next summer if that's what he wants. He has a good relationship with Klopp. With Neymar staying, he's going to have a harder time displacing one of him, Suarez, or Messi. He's on big wages already, Barca wouldn't be able to offer much more. It's a world cup year - he could stay our star player showing what he can do in the CL and guarantee his selection for the seleção. He only just turned 25 last month. Depends how desperate he is to win trophies cos that's the main thing that moving to Barca would give him (aside from the nicer weather, language, being with his childhood friend etc).

Hmm, I dunno about that, Suarez was by far the best player in the league the season after he tried to leave for Arsenal. It depends on the player really.

Well, the player could have had every intention of staying when they signed - or they could be fine with both staying and going if the club decide to sell them, there are plenty of reasons really

I don't even remember that to be honest. I don't think I ever even payed attention to Suarez until the season he was ridiculously good.

Ronald Koeman has confirmed Ross Barkley will leave @Everton this summer. "he is looking for a new challenge. We'll see what happens"

Why does he wear the mask!?
In the bonkers transfer world we have now, as well as the English tax, what do we expect he'll go for?

And what silly club will pay the fee?

Disagree - think he has all the tools to be very good, even great. But he needs a new manager, new challenge and to get his head out of his ass.

Sick of seeing young English players squander their abilities and chances.
History will show that Barkley was just another overhyped young English player. He's nowhere near good enough to play for a top 4 team. You're throwing the word 'great' around pretty loosely and it will never apply to Barkley.

BBC reporting that Monaco are in talks with forward Kylian Mbappe over a contract extension

Monaco are in talks with Kylian Mbappe over a contract extension for the 18-year-old striker, says the French club's vice-president.

Mbappe, one of the most sought-after talents in football, has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Manchester City have also been linked, but BBC Sport understands the club are reluctant to pay the 180m euro (£160m) asking price.

It would be a massive blow. We've got a better selection of attacking options now than in the last few seasons, but Coutinho's still our best player. Firmino's partnership with Coutinho was one of the strongest aspects of our play last season and losing that would be a big dent in our attack.

There's no doubt we need to strengthen in defence and midfield, but if it came down to keeping Coutinho or getting Van Dijk and Keita in, I'd choose the former.

If we want to be challenging for the title again we need to keep our best players or at least try our very best to do so. If he refuses to play and really wants to leave, then obviously there's not much that can be done to stop him and we're better off taking the money.

History will tell - I'm just saying he has, on paper, all of the attributes. He's strong, he's quick, two great feet, good skill - but, like so many English players, it's between the ears that will cost him.

Barkley won't go anywhere, that can afford him, that will play him more than Everton do. So it's a downhill slope for his career from here on out.

Same season! Although he was pretty good in Rodgers first season (the one before that) too - he got 23 goals in 33 games and was 2nd top scorer behind RvP

As an Everton fan, I have to say I won't be unhappy to see the back of him to be fair. Never lived up to his potential and his lack of drive last season was just sad to see.

Klassen looks 10x more dynamic than him and he have been in this club for 1 month

Barkley is making a big mistake.

He's not as good as he thinks he is. He should stay put.

He has a problem with Koeman not kissing his arse all the time. The prick. See you at Sunderland in 5 years.

Well I'll be glad to see coutinho out if the league. One less chance of Pool competing.

They really do need to start holding on to the very best players though.

looks like he had a slight "correction" done to his previous tattoo

Wasn't that goal basically meaningless too? lol what the hell Sané?

Person: "What's that tattoo of?"
Sane: "It's of me celebrating a goal in the Champions League."
Person: "Really? Was it the winning goal?"
Sane: "No, someone else scored before me but I thought it was a pretty cool moment."
Person: "What kind of goal was it?"
Sane: "A tap-in."
Person: "Who was it against?"
Sane: "Monaco."
Person: "Oh. At least it was in the final, right?"
Sane: "No."
Person: "Semi final?"
Sane: "No..."
Person: "Quarter final?"
Sane: "No. Last 16."
Person: "Ah. I'm guessing you made it to the quarters though, right?"
Sane: "Nah, we lost the second leg."

At 23 I think the time for that has come and gone tbh. I agree he has the tools, but he's shown very little sign of using them right. Everton are doing well to cash in.

Holy crap!!

It's almost as bad as the one Mauricio Pinilla got after his shot against Brasil during the last WC.

Ralph Rangnick on Keita: "The player isn't the problem. The problem is the entourage around the player, the whole village in Guinea or some other people that tell him why he has to do that [change club] right now.

Apparently Guineans aren't very happy with Rangnicks comments.
