The World Ends With You 10th Anniversary

Spukc

always chasing the next thrill
One of the worst games I ever played. Main character was a douche and I just randomly scribbled on the touchscreen and won every battle til the point I decided it wasn't worth my time.

you forgot to mention this game was overrated as fuck.

Happy Anniversary!
Seriously, delay Kingdom Hearts III if it means we get a sequel, no one should mind.

if you're gonna discuss 'all-time great, one-of-a-kind games', the world ends with you has to get a mention. i'm still amazed by just how clever & enjoyable this game is to look at, listen to, & play :) ...

Some of that would look really silly in motion. It'd be a nice touch for a game focused on fashion, though.

Definitely one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It's amazing how all of the game's distinct elements are symbiotic, working so well together. A lot of novel ideas that work out, too. The characters, the story, the visuals, the music... it's all exemplary. Once you get a hang of it, the battle system is pretty cool, too.

The pin designs are fantastic:

It's great how TWEWY also stands out for having actual character arcs and depth, instead of being superficial "what you see is what you get," like in a lot of other games.

bu..but, that is how Fashion works.

on a side note, if they ended up making a sequel (which they won't. For a long time. Eternity. Maybe.), hopefully there is a rarity tier for the pins, like in most weapon/items in RPG.

also to keep the pin mini game where you basically just flick pins against each other with special powers and shiz. That mini-game is actually pretty fun, sadly against mediocre AI

I remember playing this back in 2011 and it has been on of my favourite RPGs ever since. I basically played it for much of a London-Bangkok flight much to the dismay of my parents!

i'll be honset, the only experience i have with this franchise was the cameo in Dream Drop Distance. I have been meaning to play this game for awhile but i have never been able to find a copy, hopefully i can find one and get it the time it deserves

boiled goose

good with gravy
Probably high in my favorite rpgs list.

Game started a bit meh, but reaches awesome pretty quickly. And best postgame content ever

Really enjoyed it, did not enjoy the scratches on my touch screen. Ah well, that became my DS for games with heavy touch screen use lol.

Man, TWEWY is one of my favorite SE RPGs. I loved the game on 3DS and enjoyed it even more on my iPad. Unfortunately sequel is nowhere in site and mobile version will probably stop functioning come iOS 11 time.

It's not hard to come by, you can find it for about $20 online.

I really enjoyed the game but I got so sick off the walls, specifically the brand name related walls. Dropped the DS version somewhere in the first week, I then tried the android version and ended up dropping it at the end of joshua's week.

Also the iOS/Android version's soundtrack was way way way better than the DS's.

Can you believe Japan got:

FF12IZJS
KH2FM
and TWEWY

All in the same year?

It's a shame that they haven't gotten around to working on a sequel yet, cause the original remains one of the most innovative and cohesive games in the genre, and while Persona 5 is great, stylish, and incredibly well designed, even it still falls short of TWEWY in more than one way. I still think that a sequel is possible, since there are obviously enough people at SE who want one, but it's obvious that it won't be a priority for a looooong time. I don't see it even starting development until after FFVIIR, assuming Nomura still cares about it at that point.

This game is still an incredible thing. The aesthetic, how they tie it into the game design, which ties into the writing, which then ties back into the aesthetic... it's a miracle they pulled it off, but bringing every aspect of the game back to Shibuya street culture and the game's themes of redemption, resurrection and standing out from the crowd does the job. The combat is crazy interesting and makes it one of those brilliant DS games that literally can't exist anywhere else (sorry, iOS version, you tried), and the scaleable difficulty levels (you can drop Neku back down to any previous level!) is still insanely ahead of its time.

Being a handheld game means the general consensus won't ever catch up, but this is easily one of Square's finest. Shame we never got a sequel to follow up on the promise of the special reports.

Really didn't get on with this, disliked the characters, their clown shoes, the whole fashion/pins thing and the dual screen combat, I played most of the JRPGs released on DS in the EU and this was the only one I abandoned before the end of act 1. Still, kudos for trying something different, to each their own, it's clearly popular.

Sweet Jesus! 10 years?! Wow! Thanks for reminding me that I haven't finished the game despite having it for 10 years OP. I gave up at the last boss because I came damn near close to defeating her on the hardest difficulty level. I remember paying the notorious Square Enix tax and bought it a the now defunct Virgin Megastore.

I think the game was a bit ahead of its time making use of all the 3DS features although let's face it: juggling looking at two screens was too much methinks when the action was more dire on the bottom screen. I wonder if anyone got a perfect combo on the top screen in most battles. I always dreaded fighting the nine tailed fox on higher difficulties because when it transformed into the human fox, it was the bane of my existence.

But really for me, I think the fashion system (what other JRPG has a stat called guts that lets a male protagonist cross dress and embraces it?) was pretty damn cool and the risk/reward battle system encouraged bumping up the difficulty level. Leveling up pins when you're not playing the game was pretty damn cool although the game locks out at 99 days, 99 hours (I haven't played it for that long). I applaud the design choices in the game for taking risks. Plus Neku's character development was really well done as were the bosses.

TWEWY truly was one of the best games on the DS. It's a shame there was never a sequel and Nomura basically keeps saying please be excited. Maybe after he's done with KH III, he'll finally get to making a sequel. I think it would work quite well on the Switch; a 3DS sequel might be a bit too late but it would have been cool to use StreetPass to trade and level up pins ala SMT IV's StreePass feature.

Never manged to get into this game, but I do love the art and presentation a lot. It's very 2000 era Nomura. I kind of hate the music though.. so many annoying tracks with awful lyrics. :x

It's the other way round. Some terrible character designs (particularly main guy), but great music. One of the few times I didn't mind J-Pop.

Very overrated game IMO. The style makes it fun first, but it gets very repetitive. The game world is extremly small and the battle system with the whole stylus controls kinda sucks. And that TWEWY world in Kingdom Hearts ... ew.

Yeah I don't think I've spent more time on any DS game and it's in my top 10 longest played games total.

Putting 4 layers of difficulty on it (pin levels, actual difficulty tier, droprate level and chain length) was a stroke of genius.

I'm not even sure what a sequel could do better other than the graphics.
I'm not married to the second screen fight idea (barely used the attack trees, just made damage) so it could work on any decent touchscreen device.

For people who dislike the gameplay of the DS version I very much recommend the iOS version. Easier, less convoluted gameplay.

I don't know why there's so much hate for the smart phone version. I absolutely love seeing the game again but with high resolution art and higher quality music. It's perfect to grind out levels on the go.

TWEWY is one of my all time favorite games and I can't believe it's already been so long since it was released. Everything about the game hooked me instantly and I think the best part was after you beat the game. You could easily load up any past chapter and there were additional challenges which would unlock more lore via special reports. It added so much to the replayability and it the best New Game+ mode I've ever seen.

Also the bonus chapter is so hilarious!

The battle system on the mobile version isn't any better tho.

It just doesn't feel very responsive and accurate.

Enjoyed the style, music, characters and whatever about the game, but everything involving actually playing it was a massive chore.

I don't like handhelds but I bought a DS. I was looking for highly recommended games at a Blockbuster sale and this was the only one on the list on sale for $20. Played it and was immediately hooked but made the mistake of starting over at the end of the first week cause I thought the game would be short lol.

A masterpiece in every way. It's originality and uniqueness In the form of gameplay, items and writing make this an all-time favorite of mine. May we get the sequel we deserve

I played it a long time ago. Didn't finish it, got to a part where a character was attacked by a shark thing (I think??) and other games pulled me away.

Then I played KH 3d and recognized everyone except Joshua. His part in that game was super confusing so I guess I never saw him in TWEWY.

Joshua is probably the best part of the story. Such a likable character.

This is probably one of my favorite DS games. I don't even think I had a particularly wonderful time with the battle system. I just remember pressing random directions on the D-Pad and focusing entirely on the bottom screen. But I still loved the touch-based gameplay and making decks and evolving pins. I was in love with the themes and the story as well. The revelations throughout the game were such a treat, and the chapter-based structure of the game made it easy to replay my favorite parts.
