What is the pettiest thing that pisses you off in a game?

I disagree with OP on characters talking outloud to themselves, I go that at my desk at work - people do it, and it makes sense for a game.

My dislike is when games don't explain things that really should be explained. Splatoon 2, for how friendly it is, doesn't want to explain jack shit about the ranked modes. For how great Breath of the Wild is, "yeah, you totally have to google with that game" is a design flaw for me.

Loading bar animations. If you're going to make me wait, at least be a little more imaginative than a bar. This isn't the early 2000's and this isn't a Flash website.

BotW grass interaction with Link :
It's supposed to be those little details that make you feel the game is polished somehow, but it's so badly implemented here that I'd rather have Link clip through grass in that particular case.

I've spent 125+ hours (according to my Switch UI), and I literally have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

I've just started playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and everything is all well and good, and as expected in a character-driven singleplayer game, there's a lot of commentary from the lead.

Plenty of games do it - Tomb Raider, Spiderman, Uncharted, Horizon - and it's fine. But I noticed that when I hear Lara's voice, she's actually speaking out loud. Why! Who does that? I'm not just overhearing her stream of consciousness, and it isn't just the odd verbalised thought, it's constant, out-loud chat.

You'll just be walking around like this:

giphy.gif

And she'll be muttering to herself. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I generally don't talk to myself for hours at a time and it really gets under my skin when I see Lara bathing in the sound of her own voice.

What petty things grind your gears?
It's not that she's literally talking to herself. The gameplay designers are choosing to provide clues via speech. Too much hand holding and bad design. Like if you approach a locked door which you cannot open because you don't have the key yet they want to let the player know somehow that it's off limits for now so they have the character mutter something out loud. It's equivalent to too much telling and not enough showing in film. Naughty Dog games are bloated with this nonsense.

Sprint cooldowns (Friggin video game characters, who dont have lungs, are always "out of breath" after sprinting for 5 seconds... the fuck?)

Skill trees (Gee thanks for locking these useful abilities away from me, I'm having so much fun spamming the same attacks as I fill up some stupid XP bar.)

Sequels having drastically less content than the previous game. (Tekken 7 I'm looking at you especially, where the hell are my mains at?)

Character creators in games with established playable characters. (It killed Soul Calibur, nobody properly played the game because they were busy making OCs to replace the main casts).

Putting internet memes in video games (I like memes, but memes aren't a commodity to be sold with your game, so don't do it. That being said though...)

The lack of Smash Mouth in games with licenced soundtracks. (I jest, maybe.)

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Games that contain something for you to do or see after the credits roll, but require you to sit there and watch a scrolling list of credits. Like, I get that certain union rules or whatever would require you to actually give credits to the people who made the game, but the only people who care about the credits are literally the people in the credits themselves, who probably would just not skip the credits.

Also, cutscenes in which characters are ludicrously more powerful than their abilities in-game would suggest, aka Cutscene Power to the Max. Particularly when you're fighting an enemy, and you beat him, and then in the following cut-scene he just powers up and no-sells that you beat him in actual gameplay.

This made me laugh too hard! Pretty much what you said and the games I can think of from the top of my head that do this to you are three Fire Emblem games... Blazing Sword, Awakening and Fates.
When the player beats the game, everyone goes on a very short lived spree of joy that the world is saved, maybe a minute or less is spent on that... then right afterwards there are just endless dialogues of each character praising and thanking you. And in all three games, I learned more about myself than the characters in the game. Feels super awkward. Which is why I believe in Fire Emblem series, there should be no player avatar or player involvement in the story. I rather just focus entirely on the main character's legacy, than my "made up fan fiction" if I was in the game.

Lol, I was pretty much thinking about FE when making that post tbh. JRPGs are the worst about it (though I mostly play Japanese games, so Western games might do it a a lot too). It justs me feel like the devs think the people who play their games are all losers who need validation from their characters. It's a little insulting.

Unskippable videos and logos when a game is starting.

If I push ESC I want that shit to stop immediately. Even if the game is still loading, I want it to stop even when that means showing a Loading... message. I don't care whose physics engine is in the game, or who produced it, or which graphics driver is supposedly the best. Just. Stop.

And once I push ESC that choice should be saved and used the next time the game starts. In fact, how about only show the stuff once any way?

The bloody, bloody, so real screen that became prominent during the last gen. I can't see shit because you just had to put red shit all over the screen and I can't see who is shooting me or where the cover is. So fucking annoying. Luckily, most devs have been moving away from doing that so its not as big of an issue anymore but I have no idea why anyone thought that obscuring so much red shit was a good idea.

ffxiv, giving me a linkpearl to communicate with the scions only for minfilia to use the linkpearl to tell me to go the waking sands for 3 lines of dialogue

Mega Man and its related/inspired platformers: The inability to crouch.

You would think that such a series with a major focus on dodging and maneuvering around your opponents' bullets and various powers would let you crouch by pressing down. But no, it's never been an option. And it drives me insane.

I can't think of a single other 2D platformer that won't let me crouch.

Maybe Klonoa?

Haha, yeah man. I always thought the same too. Glad to see someone else who thinks the same.

Fun fact: I am someone who does an annual Fire Emblem February, where I complete each of the games from the series on the hardest difficulty(just my own form of pleasure, of course). Whenever I do BS, Awakening and Fates, I prepare myself so hardcore for their cringey story telling of "me" and the ending of "me" just so I can get through with the month... so by now it is all engraved into me and had you not make your post, I would have came here to do it myself. Lol.

Plenty of things I dislike with a passion, but the pettiest? Probably save games that keep count on how many times you have saved. Has zero impact on anything but still somehow bothers me, making me want to save as least often as possible.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Terrible frontend menu's, UI, and/or fonts.

SFV usually makes me reconsider my decision to play it the moment that sterile and lifeless menu loads up asking me to choose a mode as an example.

Not to keep specifically on the Capcom train, but MVC3's localized font text also put me right off. That milky, grey hue and typeface is used on other games as well, but I loathe it always.

Ridiculous online trophies. I'm not going to put 80 hours into an online mode, especially when it will probably go offline eventually and the trophies will become unobtainable. Not cool. At least with ridiculous single player trophies, you'll always be able to go back and do it.

Games being referred to as a Metroidvania, when it is clearly taking influence almost exclusively from either Metroid or Castlevania: SotN. Hell, Metroid's innovation of acquiring abilities to discover new areas have been used everywhere outside 2D platformers. Zelda, Banjo Kazooie, Mega Man X, Pokémon, etc.

SotN and the like, or Igavania, is just more of an Action RPG where progression is based primarily on getting strong enough to kill the next boss.

Rarely happens as it takes something mighty annoying or disappointing in a game to aggravate me. The texture work in Final Fantasy XII is one of those things.

Swing the camera round and you'll see her lips moving.

Life bars floating directly above my & my enemies' heads. Totally distracting. Just put the life bars in the upper or lower corner of the screen.

Having to press a thousand fucking buttons to load the game, or taking forever to get through all the startup bullshit. Capcom seems to be the worst offender with this shit, with so many damn confirmation boxes popping up with checking dlc and all that shit, when it should just load to main menu, "load game" already highlighted, and no need for a confirmation prompt from the game having been loaded - i know it was loaded, i was there when i clicked on it.

Lack of auto save or inability to save when I need to. Having to replay things, possibly hours worth because this was not implemented makes me angry.

When in a tutorial popup tool tips pause the gameplay, I don't know but it gets so under my skin I want to scream.

Having to hold buttons to open doors, pick up stuff, or activate something. It infuriates me.

I think it started with Destiny and I have no idea why everyone seems to be doing it lately.

Horizon Zero Dawn:

Why every NPC lay down have exact same pose?

There is Quest in Horizon
that u need to stop a guy from killing sun king. but once take him out he will send out Glinthawk after u. Now once battle against them starts this guy will repeat same damn line over and over and over until u kill all Glinthawks.

When characters talk to each other or themselves and their mouth isn't moving. I also hate that thing when games don't model the face and it's just an image. For example in Kingdom hearts sora sometimes has a completely flat face and other times it's actually modeled. Just wish for some consistency

Aren't these necessary to keep the servers as they are though? As a business hosting these services aren't exactly cheap and I imagine it will get worse not any better.
Publishers are hosting their own servers where people play multiplayer, Sony and Microsoft wont provide these. And to my understanding the subscribe fee isn't going to 3rd parties. If anyone has a source to correct this, I'd love to read it. And as you know, multiplayer on PC works just fine without any fees. So yeah, those subscriptions suck and are unfair to the consumer. It's not because of necessity, it's because of greed.

Having to follow an NPC while they're walking and your walking speed is either too slow or too fast so you're constanly adjusting your speed to match them. Looking at you, AC series.

The inability to disable post-processing effects like film grain, vignetting, chromatic aberration or depth of field. That or when they lump all those things into one generalized "post-processing effects" toggle in the options menu. SEPERATE options PLEASE, for the love of god!

In an RPG, if the main character dies while the rest of the party is alive, it's game over.

I'll never understand why this is a constant design decision.

Oh, and HMs in Pokemon (which I hope are gone forever after Sun & Moon).
