Is PUBG a GotY contender?

Sorry, but Splatoon 2 is GOTY nay, GOTG.

I will give it to PUBG as the game of the year in terms in entertaining youtube videos tho. Its fun as hell to watch.

As someone who likes both PUBG is a ten times more satisfying to play, and a million times more satisfying when you win.

I agree with this so much. I would add something else though:

NOT JAPANESE

That being said, if somehow Yoko Taro or Miyazaki were listed in the credits even as serving cofee to Playerunknown and the rest of his team GAF would be:

Godlike!
Incredibly level design!
Respects the player!
Japan is back!
Poor performance is suddenly acceptable!
Ha I love this post.

I doubt it'll win goty.

- early access
- popularity didn't make a ton of moba games win goty. I doubt King of the hill games will be any different.
- Predominantly PC

Well, the big MOBAs (Dota 2, League) came "out" around 2009-2012 when being a multiplayer PC game automatically disqualified you for GOTY, because, let's face it, it was consoleland until very recently. However, Overwatch won last year in a lot of places, hence why some people think PUBG is a legit contender now.

I finally bit the bullet and gave it a try today.

Played 4 rounds, didn't see a single person the entire time and was killed by some kind of sci fi force field because I never found a vehicle each game.

Refunded. Put me in the "don't get it" bucket.

Should I never replay BF1 multiplayer just cause i died to a gas grenade? You basically just died to a game mechanic, gave up and determined the game wasn't for you...
I also find it hard to believe you played 4 rounds and each time didn't find a single person and died to the gas, but oh well..

I don't get PUBG. So janky. One more encounters. Awful third person cam and controls.

Back to Siege for me.

Just played this game for the first time today, me and my buddy got 1st place in the second game and it was really enjoyable. Gets so intense towards the end, especially when you have friends with you holding down a fort.

First time playing a game in this genre, can see it contending based on fun factor.

It will be my game of the year, I have never felt as tense in a game as I have in this.

All throughout the match you are constantly looking over your shoulder, this amplifies in the final 10 and almost becomes unbearable in the final 2.

The only game that has he ever played that I feel is better is Half Life.

FWIW, I haven't played Zelda, Mario, Splatoon or A N Other darling game.

Aside from everything else, 'most fun' isn't really the same as 'best. Games are about a great deal more than pure 'fun', at least to me.

Perhaps the fault is on my part. I thought most people put a little more consideration into their game of the year pick than 'this is the one I had most fun with'. If that is all it comes down to, then sure, I can see why PUBG might be GotY for lot of people.

Out of interest why not?

I mean you could have the most gorgeous well optimised game ever made but why would that make it GOTY if it wasn't fun? Surely having fun in a game is the base line everything should be measured on?

PUBG has problems, being unable to get into buildings and therefore get loot until the building textures load is a big one for me.

But as a squad based game it is a huge amount of fun. Solo needs work.

Install game on ssd. Fixed loading issues for me.

I could see it getting on the shortlist but not winning it.
Maybe if they fix all the jank/bugs/.. and release before end of 2017.

I get the appeal, but it's the most early access-y early access game that I've played. I can't forgive the wide variety of technical issues. Some might say that the jank gives it charm.... No. It's just jank.

On the contrary it's the least early access-y game I've ever played because of which I think this is one early access game that has the best chance of getting released.

Sure. Other than perhaps Zelda, there isnt much competition anyways.

What? This year has been pretty damn good.

Nier: Automata
Nioh
Persona 5
Horizon

All are contenders in my mind. I'd love to see Nioh and Nier do well, but I don't think they have a chance against the heavy hitters and more mainstream titles.

Winning a game of PUBG with your pals is easily one of the most exhilarating feelings in video games.

this. Yeah, the game has it's flaws (performance, door-animation not working) but hell, the game is fun. We play it exclusively right now.

Best thing is you can play it alone, or with 2-4 friends. CS:GO i.e. is a pain, if you are just two people or alone.

Plus it has the feeling "just one more game" after you lose.

"Get better hardware" is no excuse for poor performance in this case.

Also, your avatar is terrifying.

I can see it winning outright.

Yeah. I'm convinced it's already locked as their GOTY. Even Dan's love for BotW won't topple PUBG. "Yes, it's janky, it's buggy, it's missing features, it's straight up broken sometimes... but it's fun!", I can already hear them say.

It will be their GOTY I disagree the most with since Shadow of Mordor :/

I struggle to see it as one, I feel like the hype is blinding right now. I'm really sorry, but I'm having trouble seeing it as little more than a "fad game" like Pokemon Go and Five Nights at Freddy's. Hugely popular and successful games that are just going to drive off a cliff before you know it.

I know thread titles should be short. But there's no reason why someone would use PUBG on the op and not a single time the full name of the game for the ppl not knowing what PUBG means.

I'm wondering very much so why multiplayer only games are never in contention for greatest games of all time. I never hear any MMOs etc.... is it because you wont be able to play these years from now?

It will be Gaintbombs GOTY for most of them but from an industry perspective probably not due to it being early access, pretty darn janky, PC only (at the moment) and a fairly simple MP focused game.

It will probably win best MP or EA rewards but very unlikely GOTY itself from larger game outlets. I bet it will be the top of a lot of community driven awards though!

PUBG is successful because people like the came itself not because it's a shitty game with a famous ip attached to it or youtubers making LOL SO SCARY facecamvideos tho so it already has more merits to it than those two you named

I would suggest that no MMO from 2000 onward has been quite good enough to be the game of its year.

The only exception being World of Warcraft, according to google it was Gamespots game of the year in 2004.

There have also been other Multiplayer games that have taken GOTY here and there. Overwatch and Rocket League come to mind.

Overwatch is big on consoles too

At least 3 publications regularly play PUBG (GB, Waypoint, Polygon), so I think that it has a really great chance to be in many GOTY lists

Isn't it still in early access? Do early access games count?

There's no release date currently, other than they want to leave Early Access by the end of the year. I'm pretty sure unless it gets released it won't be eligible for NeoGAF GOTY.

This thread will fade of GAF wiyhin 24 hours it was created, there is your answer.

I guess if PUBG was a PS4 exclusive there'd be more than enough console warriorz to prop it up...

Unless the devs do something incredibly stupid to this game, it's going to be around for a very long time.

True enough. I'll admit Pokemon Go and FNAF were poor choices to name, I guess I was just trying to explain what I meant when I said "fad game."

I have no interesting in playing PUBG but if people are playing and enjoying their time with it then it should be GOTY contender. There's the argument it's still in early access but nowadays GaaS are a thing and even releasing complete games but later patching it and changing a lot of things or releasing major expansions through DLC, should we wait for a game receiving a "complete edition" to it be able to be a goty contender?

It's a phenomenon unlike anything since Minecraft, so it's absolutely a contender. It'll make a lot of finalists lists and win plenty of awards.

Of course it has stiff competition with Zelda and some games that haven't released yet, and on GAF it has to deal with the unique* audience this place attracts, but as long as it's eligible it'll make top 10.

* Look at the people in this thread arguing for stuff like Persona and Yakuza or Nioh and Gravity Rush for evidence. And then there's the whole Horizon thing.

I just picked it up 2 days ago and played it yesterday for the first time. My first impression is that it's insense as fuck. I was having heart palpitations ever time I walked up to an area with multiple houses. Felt like I could get shot at any time. Lol

My impression: it is only the game of the week and got a lot of relevant youtubers feedback. Sure, it is fun, but still in early access. Maybe when/if becomes a full game can we start talking about if it is a goty contender?
