Game soundtracks on vinyl | Analogue Gen 33fps

Keep an eye on this thread, SL9 newsletter, twitter and instagram. They post whenever they have something announced.

This thread is how I got word that they had the limited DS vinyls.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely will do all of your suggestions. Sincerely appreciate it!

It's always baffled me how accepted bootleg stuff is when it comes to vinyl, even before this new surge of popularity (I grew up with my dad collecting vinyl).

If someone lists a bootleg record on our local auction site, it's completely acceptable. If someone lists a 'bootleg' video game though, it's removed immediately and sometimes the account suspended.

I guess it's more equivalent to a repro, but still.
Weird. I was just wondering when my Bananas was going to ship.

I'd find Square-Enix's lack of interest to put more game soundtracks on vinyl weird if they weren't a Japanese company. If I had to guess, there is more demand for the soundtracks in the West than in Japan, and they don't really care what their customers in the West want (like TWEWY 2, for example).

yeah this whole post bums me out & also makes me want a TWEWY vinyl too

Apparently this was shown at some Korean StarCraft event + Blizzard's merch store is down for maintenance until the 8th. Hopefully it's not an event exclusive. Anyone in here who can translate Korean by chance? :p

I received my copy of Hero of Time last week. Both sleeves are damaged by the vinyl discs though. Looks like shit :(

Does anyone else have the same issue?

Those of you who preordered the P5 vinyl there was a email with the first making of video or you can just hit this guy https://youtu.be/QcDBAmbaQHM
God, Persona 5 is one of my most wanted vinyls but I just can't justify that price, especially from iam8bit...

If it turns out good, I hope the markup isn't too bad.

Tons, mainly about out of print expensive records and stuff that is not available officially. Like all the Moonshake game soundtracks or Akira and Ghost in the Shell soundtracks. (That finally got repressed legit)
Oh wow, I'd assume pressing bootlegs would be impossible due to the process involved.

Interesting...

Haven't received mine yet (but hey, the Kickstarter version just shipped yesterday, so maybe soon), BUT I'm hearing a lot of people havng the same issue as you. However, I'm also hearing that iam8bit is being pretty helpful with sending out replacement sleeves for this one. I'd try shooting them an e-mail (store@iam8bit.com for US, store.uk@iam8bit.com for UK/EU).

Bootlegs have been around forever. I remember seeing a hilarious video of Neil Young in a record store in the 70s, finding a bootleg of one of his shows, and getting pissed at the owner of the shop.

Back in the day, bootlegs were usually rare tracks (B-Sides, etc) or live shows.

A lot of bootlegs were recorded by the bootlegger and printed in very limited quantities and shared mostly among friends (think 10s not 100s). Today's bootlegs are even worse (though this wasn't always the case). People like moonshakes and whoever that Taiwanese guy is who makes all the illegal anime vinyl soundtracks are much worse. Little to no effort goes into them (moonshakes supposedly grabs sound files for free online) and then they profit in huge margins.

These are effectively counterfeits while bootlegs had some merit as it was the only way you could hear a recording of some live show though still were illegal.

Edit: I was being unfair and hyperbolic on the mp3 comment. I adjusted my wording to not misrepresent what moonshakes does.

So I'm not sure if this is an issue with the Vinyl or my turntable (Denon 300F) but the Castlevania 4 release sounds noticeably slow. I've put in other records, and I haven't had any issues with them. I'm comparing it to the ost on youtube at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL79DA330B8AE4C836

I feel like I'm either going crazy, I have a mispress, or my Denon is slowly trying to kill me, cause I can't afford another player. Has anyone else had any issues like this? my turntable is not even 6 months old.

Are you playing it at 45RPM? That's what it should be. Not 33-1/3RPM

Slaps head. I had no idea it was a 45RPM album. My denon is known for slowing down and then giving up the ghost (a random manufacturers defect) so I just thought of the worst possible situation.

I think I also thought that RPM meant size, but that's clearly a separate thing.

Thank you!

Glad to help!
I've spun my fair share of records at the wrong speed...
and sometimes didn't even notice until the record was over... :D
But some of them aren't even labeled as 45RPM, although I think the Castlevania ones all are.

My Dark Souls 1 lp is a bit crackly too, but it's also pressed very loud (compared to the lp I was listening to before it), so at least it's not a quiet pressing with loud crackle.

It had a rather dramatic noise happen in a very quiet part but playing that same track again it was totally silent at the right time so I suspect these are slightly dusty and crackly from static electricity.

So what's the concensus on Moonshake? Haven't heard much discussion here regarding his work. There seems to be some who really dig what they're doing, and others who vehemently dislike their operation. Obviously it's bootleg stuff, but is there something else I'm missing? Or is it a combination of that and it being poorly mastered, low-quality rips?

Agreed with pretty much everything here. I avoid 'unofficial' releases for these reasons.

Obviously based on my history I'm not a fan but for most of his releases he does use high quality sound files so that's not really an issue. However, he's pretty much stated he goes and downloads them from a vgm database website and then sends them to be pressed as records. The exception is his Pokemon release which used the terrible pikachu CDs of the music. Really it's more that he uses other people's music to sell his artwork and make a very pretty penny on it while claiming it's for the fans. I don't see why his stuff can be linked here but a piracy link would get removed.

Edit: He has claimed he's sent money to the original composers of the music after selling the records so whether you want to believe him on that is up to you.

Finally getting some tea to start listening to DS, and I have to say it's incredible. I've never really listened to the soundtrack on anything near a high quality set up, and I must say... It's quite enjoyable. Hearing little bits I missed while playing the games is fun.

Quick question for anyone interested; do most of you guys just use the original sleeves with your LPs? I bought some Master Sleeves when I purchased my record player. Would it be better to switch them out with those? Do any of you guys keep your vinyl in the original sleeves for sake of keeping everything together? Basically just want to know what your guy's personal preferences are.

My record collection is finally outgrowing my two-stack cube. Thanks a lot thread!

I would like something bigger, either 2x2 or 2x3, that I can set both my turntable and speakers on top of. Any one have any affordable suggestions?

From the most recent email:
All music has been sourced and mastered from actual SNES, Gameboy, NES and Famicom Disk hardware

Also, he's donating to charity:

As always a portion of all sales will be going to two charities, The African Wildlife Foundation (www.awf.org) for DKC and Penny4NASA (www.penny4nasa.org) for Metroid.

So yeah, it's certainly illegal, but at least there's something good coming from them?

It's piracy and should be banned on gaf.
No such thing as a consensus if it's your personal opinion. I really like the guy and have all of his releases. According to him, he tries to get licenses for his releases, but he rarely gets any answers at all. It's technically piracy, but it doesn't pirate an actual available product. If I could buy the stuff he does on licensed vinyl, I would.

I had an issue with my FTL album sleeve a while back (the record itself was fine but the sleeve arrived dented and creased to hell) and they replaced it for free once the initial shipments were done. Took about a week. Give them the time and consideration to make good on it and they probably will without much friction. To be safe, I would be nice and polite when reaching out. It helps.

He'll never get licenses. At least not for anything major. He burned that bridge when he started doing pirate releases of huge titles. He'll probably continue blaming labels like STS and SL9 for not being able to get licenses, but the truth is that it's noone's fault but his own.

EDIT: Also following Discogs' definition in their 'Unofficial Releases' section, then his work is textbook piracy.
Bootleg: Unauthorized recordings of live performances/broadcasts. Counterfeit: Recordings which are copied or distributed without authority, and which are packaged to resemble the original as closely as possible. Pirate: Recordings which are copied or distributed without authority, and which are usually packaged differently to the original.

sound quality's gotta be pretty bad then, right?

This. While he was making bootlegs companies like STS and Data Discs were spending two years or more negotiating license rights. And the crazy thing is he has a huge persecution complex when some pressers decided they didn't want to work with him anymore because they learned he wasn't doing legit releases.

I made the mistake of saying literally when it's not literally so I went back to just say sound files. He does use high quality rips (his words though because I don't own a copy of any of his releases) directly from the consoles so there's no lack of quality there (I forget the file format but it's definitely not mp3s). However there's a vinyl collective thread where he was a part of the conversation and it was insinuated that he just goes to a site that contains all of the files and uses those for his releases.

All of them. His titles fall under the definition of 'piracy' according to Discogs (see my edit above), whereas the orange vinyl Super Mario Bros (and its black vinyl repressings - not by Moonshake btw), for example, is a counterfeit.

I don't know about your budget and size constraints but I'll be buying this for my bedroom very soon, I know it's pretty popular among vinyl collectors as the compartments are 1-2 inches higher than a record.

Here's the range...

I use two of the cubes mixed with 2 of the 4x1 units stacked on top of each other. I'm pretty much tapped out on size (though i might be able to build up one more 2x1 on each side if I need to.
