Independent said:
A diplomatic crisis between the US and Russia is threatened after President Vladimir Putin ordered 755 US diplomats to leave Russia.

The order from Moscow, reported by AFP, comes in response to fresh sanctions against Russia announced by President Donald Trump.

Both houses of Congress backed the sanctions bill, which also includes measures against Iran and North Korea.

The sanctions are over Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and alleged interference in the US election.

Uh oh, Trump has been a bad puppet.

Didn't we do the exact same thing to Russian diplomats two(?) years ago over Crimea? Or did that get rolled back?

Also, link?

Lets try and predict Trump's angle if he Twitter rambles. I'm betting he'll use this to tell us how much we're failing at making an enemy a friend and we should working towards his best interest.

I really wish we would do the same here, but Trump won't. I feel like there's no point to having any real diplomatic ties between the two countries anymore.

Trade, political, science, military, espionage(!), "visas"... Still, that's a lot of folk. Wonder how many that leaves.

When Vlad finishes having his tantrum, is he going to realize 750 of them were probably accountants and lawyers Donny sent to help him launder his money?

I'm sure in response to this, Trump will go on a tirade about China, Democrats, Healthcare and Hillary Clinton

That seems like an absurd amount of diplomats for one country to begin with.

It includes miscellaneous personnel like support staff and families. The order is intended to symbolically cut down the total size of the US diplomatic mission to 435, which is the number of people that Russia has stationed in the US.

(Meaning that, yes, the mission has included 1190 people up until this point)

Obama expelled a lot of diplomats/spies and closed down some of their complexes right after election day. Trump delayed Russian retaliation by implying that he would roll back Obama's actions.

Trump has been trying to prevent this escalation in tensions but the establishment seems to believe that we must punish Russia again for the same things. And so now Russia is actually retaliating.

Well, at least Putin didn't murder sick orphaned children again. But that's ongoing, of course.

Trump's reaction will be interesting. The US and EU must be firmer with Russia.

The new sanctions aren't actually law yet correct? Trump hasn't signed off on them.

I wonder why they didn't wait to see what Trump was gonna do...?

This is obviously a direct counter to the Russian sanctions bill sent to the White House last Friday. Those sanctions are a response to Russian active measures in a US election, not a response to the unlawful annexation of Crimea that prompted the last round of sanctions.

Trump is not some peacemaker here, he's an ostrich trying to pretend that assault on US democracy never happened.

I will be SHOCKED if Trump signs that sanctions bill before he jets off to Jersey to play golf on Thursday. It's going to be sitting on his desk for "a while".
