The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (PC) |OT| Enter Erebonia

Agreed. I actually prefer English dub for this game. Especially with all the English VAs already did a top job for SenI/II on PS3.

Also it is somewhat amusing seeing weebs crying about the lack of JP dub in Steam Community forums.

Wrote this in the Steam thread about the dub:
The dub is fantastic btw. I've watched an undub of the beginning on Youtube to compare, and there's like only one of the japanese voices I think I prefer over the dub equivalent so far (Alisa). On the other hand, I also now there's Koyasu later on....
But dubbed Sara alone is amazing and the additional voiced lines were already noticeable in the beginning, so I guess I'll stick with the dub.
It's really good.

For everyone affected by the Intel / DoF / MSAA issue, there is now a build available on Steam that fixes it.
Select the intel_msaa_testing branch in the BETAS tab.

Good night.

This and turning off high DoF worked perfectly, thank you.

The game still isn't picking up my controller properly though, so I can't use the d-pad or control the camera. Any updates on that?

Sorry if it's a lot. I really do think it's a fantastic port. Spent the evening playing through the intro and a bit into chapter 1.

Popping in to say that thanks to this thread I solved the stuttering cutscenes issue. I set everything to max at 4K and if you uncheck the high quality depth of field the cutscenes go from stuttering mess to butter like the rest of the game already was. That setting must require some beast rig if my 1080ti can't handle it but honestly I can't notice a huge difference (but uh i'm not very tech savvy).

Durante, again, I can't thank you enough for the work you did on this. It's a freaking miracle. I remember playing through the PS3 version just imagining what it could have been like had it been on PC. I had no idea at the time that was even a remote possibility but here we are. Please just work on every single PC JRPG going forward. You have ruined me. Also, some smart company needs to offer you a stupid amount of money to work for them. Need you to stick around forever lol =)

Do we know if Cold Steel 2 is coming to PC yet? I own it on PS3 but I'm only about 5 hours in, and if it's coming to Steam with you working on it, I'll wait however long that takes!

Any update or fix regarding the diagonal movement being bugged Durante ? Three of my DS4 plugged with a usb cable when I move diagonally the character slows to a crawl. Nothing game breaking. When I get back from work I'll try with my Xbox one controller to see if it does it with it too.

Using Windows 10 post creator update if that change anything.

Yes, Cold Steel 2 is coming. Probably very late this year or early next year.

Thank you, will be fixed.
Thank you!

I've also noticed that there's something weird going on with the shadows cast by characters wearing long skirts.

Am I missing something obvious with iglute garm? On hard he wipes my party around 2500 hp

Wouldn't be asking if it wasn't still in the prologue.

Oh, the prologue boss? He's a little spongy. There isn't really a trick to him.

First form is weak to all four elements. Second is week to earth, so if you've got Needle Shot and Golden Sphere (Jusis has it), use those. Buff strength with Rean's Motivate. Lower his defense (you can do it with the craft for both Jusis and Machias.) Use your other crafts to delay and impede him as much as possible. Just keep using them, you have no reason to be banking CP that early.

Yeah, just go ham. I'm playing on Normal, but this isn't my first time playing the game. You really shouldn't have much trouble with that fight.

Oh, use Resounding Beat with Elliot. Use that and you should hardly even need to heal. I think it boosts Def by 25%? It might be 30%, but I don't recall. Anyway, cast it twice so you can stack that Def+ buff and give them all 50%. This works with STR as well actually, so also use Motivate twice with Rean.

I'm no expert, but I hope this helps!

Edit: WELP

Good night.

Played an hour this morning with the beta branch and I didn't experience a crash but will play a more to see.

Not sure how I'm feeling about the story so far. Just handed out the class books. Seems like a class of anime clichés. :/
The whole Alisa falling on him and being upset about it seems to be done 1000 times. Plus it's very obvious that
her last name is Reinhardt or however the old emperor name is spelt.

I wonder how quickly the truth gets out.

Part of the appeal is how these characters grow, keep playing. For your call on Alissa
you're wrong but that was a good try

Yeah I was was completely ignoring the individual abilities in favor of all out art attack, my bad.

Explore that dpad :p

It's real fun! Wait until you get all the tools in the box.

It's funny because
your guess is honestly far more complicated than the actual answer.

Lol at the massive cell phones

They're orbments, just newer units you can communicate with. If you look at your orbment display in the menu, that's what the inside of those things looks like, so that's why they're sort of big. Room to lay out your quartz.

The orbment has to be the most thought-out version of the pokedex/digivice/shounen doodad, I think.

Lol. This game boots up at 800fps and runs at 400fps with unlocked framerate :p

Not that this game need any, but I have some luck with SLI, it's scaling decently using The Witcher 3 compatibility bits. No graphical glitches during gameplay, but the pause screen is flickering a bit.

Frametimes spikes from time to time but not often once I locked it down to 144fps using RTSS.

I just finally identified and fixed the text button prompt issue that happened on some systems. It will be resolved in the next version.
(Likely released within the next 24 hours)

I've also noticed that there's something weird going on with the shadows cast by characters wearing long skirts.
This (and some other character shadow oddities, like broken self-shadows in places) is a known issue related to how the game does shadowing. (All of them were present on consoles, and some were worse)

Resolving it would require completely replacing the shadowing mechanism. I've considered it and ran out of time.

Also, the Alt-F4 issue is fixed in my build, will be in the next version.

Huh, not sure if I'm just dumb, but I can't even get the game to start for some reason.

I got to the config and chose Portable/Console settings (running an Lenovo T410), but the game just opens for a split-second and closes in both windowed/full-screen.

I don't suppose my laptop is simply too old?

I had the same controller issue with Steam using a DS4. Changing the controller configuration to the "gamepad" template fixed it. Though I'm not sure why that wasn't the default!

How crazy are hard and nightmare?
Nightmare is perfectly manageable if you're a veteran jrpg player. Keep your equipment up to date, prioritize SPD over everything else, and abuse cheap tactics like Rean's delay spam and Fie's dodge tanking. Also, Laura is overrated.

I disagree slightly for CS1, due to the last boss being kind of BS on Nightmare.

CS1, Hard is definitely realistic for first time playthroughs. Some slight difficulty spikes, but all of them are fair and rewarding chapter-end boss fights.

CS2, Nightmare is definitely realistic for first time playthroughs.

If you use up all your Shining Pom Bait right before you fight the final boss, you should be able to get your level up high enough to stand a chance on a fresh run of Nightmare.

At least that's what I'm hoping!

also do so by
going back to the first floor of the old school house. Fighting shining poms in the final dungeon is a pain.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Just wanna chime in here and say how fucking happy I am that this game runs so well on my ULV i5 laptop with Intel HD 5500 graphics.

Running this on 1080p with a mixture of console/high settings (medium shadows, 1080p/4XMSAA, anistropic filtering on and default draw distance).

Sticking to 30 FPS because it runs without a hitch that way. Also, there's voice acting in the intro scenes which were text only on PS3 ! Gonna love waiting for Cold Steel 2 after this.

Actually, how different are the quartz/orbment/battle systems from TiTS?

This is far simpler. You don't need to worry about formulas like in TiTs, you equip arts directly via quartz and Master Quartz give you a set of arts that you gain access to as the MQ levels up.

What's the point of the separated lines then?

they are absurdly simplified. Quartz now directly give you spells. So choosing quartz is just pickign which one gives you the stats or spells you want, instead of mixing and matching to get the right amounts for the spells you need, you just slot the best shit.
What's the point of the separated lines then?
Lines just dictate how many of the same type of quartz you can have. Can't have more than 1 attack effect quartz on the same line for instance

You can put Attack 1 on one line, Attack 2 on another, and Attack 3 on a third. You can do the same with quartz that inflict status ailments, like Seal or Blind.* So the lines are more for the sake of the physical attackers, this time around.

*Don't underestimate this. Stacking status ailments and debuffs is the bread and butter of fights in this game.
Unless you're abusing AT Delay, you coward.

You're advised to lean into strengths with this, too.

3rd has Fast Crafts Man, but this game has Evade and Counter Girl and End Very Late Game Fights With a Single S-Craft Girl, too. ;)

anyone notice some delay in sound effects? like when breaking box or doing a slash in battle, the sound sometimes played after the animation ended

Using a DS4, after playing with the controller plugged in to charge and unplugging it, the game doesn't recognize the controller anymore (even after closing/relaunching/rebooting PC).

I had this same problem in TitS, I think it's because DS4Windows uses Xinput over bluetooth and Directinput over USB, and the way Trails PC ports switches between the two is a bit iffy.

Is there anywhere in the launcher that lets you choose if you're using Directinput or Xinput? That was how to fix the issue in Trails, but I don't see that option in this launcher.

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Time to double dip!

I'm single dipping, if only to support XSEED and you all should do the same. Don't plan on getting around to playing this until all three CS games are fully out on Steam(aka a few years from now).

Does "Hide DS4 Controller" in the DS4Windows settings tab not work? You could also use Steam instead of those programs (BPM > Settings > Controller Config).

I'm trying to play the GOG version of this and it's consistently crashing after the Launcher for me with the ed8 has experience an error popup. There's a white screen , then a black screen immediately before hand.

No crash happens if I have Skip Logos and Skip Intro turned on, If I only turn Skip Logos off it crashes straight away, if I turn Skip Intros off (but not Skip Logo) then I see the System Data access screen before the crash.

I did have the CCCP coded pack installed but I've uninstalled it and that doesn't seem to change anything. Going to reboot to make sure that everything was properly removed.

The AVI's play fine outside the game in either case.

Using NVIDIA graphics card (980M) doesn't seem to make any difference if it's SLI or not SLI.

ETA - Restarting didn't help. Just double checked and the movies for Tales in the Sky , and Tales in the Sky 3rd both play fine in those games , so it doesn't seem to be programs playing AVI files generally that's causing the issue.

Durante
If you need any files / logs / want me to try a debug version and send you logs I'm happy too. Since I can just skip the Logos / Intros and watch them outside the game that's not a big deal but unless those toggles also skip the train journey AVI's I suspect I'm going to have a bad time off it pretty quickly.

Looks like someone on the Steam forums already has a Clear Save Game up for those that wanted Infinite Bonding points from the get-go. I would recommend it for anyone playing their first time, so you can get all of the dialogue/relationships you can eat from the start without concerning yourself with the stupid Bonding Points limit.

Yo Durante:

AMD cards seem to be affected from the x4 MSAA crash as well - at least my R9 290 is : P
With 4x MSAA it crashes reproducably after 1 or 2 minutes running around in that one town where you end up at the beginning of the game - both in the normal and test branch. 2x works totally fine though.

Is that a ps3 save? Otherwise that's some dedication.

Thanks! I turned off DS4Windows and I'm just using Steam, Do you know if I need to launch BPM every time I want to play something with a PS4 controller?

That sounds great! Those types of mechanics always stress me out, especially in long JRPGs. Do you know if it gives any other bonuses that break the game, or is it just infinite bonding points?

It's not. I think it's a speedrun save on PC. 25 hours or so (in-game), which yeah, is some dedication. I'm sure Turbo Mode helped a lot. lol

Supposedly Turbo Mode runs the in-game timer faster too?

Oh, there's a whole list:

(This image has No Story Spoilers, just Carryover Options). You usually only get 5 points a playthrough, but with a certain popular program, the player in the image upped it to the max. Regardless, the default 5 points will be enough to afford Infinite Bonding Points.
