Is it just my imagination, or are the number of prevalent adverts on the Xbox dashboard increasing?

There's no more ads than there were on the last/current dashboard. The home page is basically reorganised of what we have now.

Not super encouraging first impressions on the rest of it though...

I think the idea is 'add to home' replacing pins

not that I think its a good idea

and you can't add apps to home

same ads, but they're much more prominent now

I don't see how both of these things are great.

- The New Guide is Horizontal, which is already a huge minus. Additionally, you need more button presses to access things now. Friends are not listed immediately anymore... No, you actually have to click on them again, to access the list for example.
- When they said "Customize Home", I thought you could have the Customization all on one screen and not have an endless list of things that you can access faster with the Guide anyways.

Still the same. One promoted game advertisement, the one for games with gold(don't see this as an ad personally), and one suggestion tile.

I don't see it as a problem personally. The promotion spot is good for visibility, discovering content, and it's always relevant to content you can purchase in the store. The games with gold tile is good because it drives people to actually download their free games. I'd rather they put the free games front and center like that than try and hide them away.

Which is a horrible idea, not only does it take up way too much space compared to just a small tile it's just MS way of forcing streams/mixer. Mixer having it's own tab was bad enough now it'll be all over your home screen too. The achievement tile is neat but that's it.

Honestly this whole update screams "how can we promote our ads and mixer better" not "personalization"

and they might as well remove the option of bg colors at this point

This is the first time Xbox does a UI update that i dont want. I wish i could just not update to it. I absolutely hate the new UI.

MS is incapable of doing something functional and sleek anymore. And it doesnt even look that functional. What a terrible new design.

Why is the horizontal layout a huge minus ?! Imo its much better than the vertival layout because you can use the bumpers to switch tabs.
One more button to press is not the best solution, but it doesnt bother me that much (and I have the feeling it loads the friends faster now)

I was confused at first thinking you'd censored the background for some reason.

Goodness me.

Make sure to leave feedback on the forums and whatnot. I doubt it'll make any difference, but you never know if there's enough outcry.

It's worth noticing that the new avatar editor seems to be pre-installed too (it appears with "beta" on its icon), but it doesn't do anything yet, only displays a "work in progress" page. I guess it means we'll get to test it soon. :)

Anyone know how to force this update? I am in alpha preview.

Go to Settings / System / Update, you can trigger the update manually if you have access to it.

Yeah, ideally Oneguide should display the last TV frame in the app image buffer (there is alwas one, since when you resume the app you can see a still picture of the last thing you were watching).

I sent it directly to Mike.

This looks terrible.

They should just keep the existing OS and keep optimizing it.

And add new features like: ability to remove 0g games and... I can't think of anything else heh. I just really want that feature.

Played with it before dinner, seems like they just moved things around again for the sake of it.

Why do they keep changing it unnecessarily? I was finally just getting use to the current one. :|

All I keep asking for is a completed Achievement section, something for finishing a game, why do they keep ignoring it?! :'(

I have been posting quite a bit about Achievement completion for a while in feedback , it is bizarre they have removed that from 360 , they know there are many cheevo hunters out there! Even Mike Ybarra talks about completing games 100%, surely it's crossed his mind at some point? I find the way they think to be odd on occasion.

Seems to be an issue with this months GwG's store pages, it acts as if you don't have them with GWG. Paniced for a second thinking I didn't grab them but as they still appear in RTI and on the website store so they should be fine, for now I would probably avoid getting the GwG's through the console itself just incase

I really like the current UI. It's slick and very fast. Everything I use takes no more than a couple seconds to access. I'm not sure a drastic overhaul is called for.

First impressions are that it looks rubbish, I really, really don't like that the home screen doesn't have the dash/guide bar thing on the left side of the screen. It looks so bare and unfinished now.

I'll see if I've got the update later and hopefully the customisation options will make up for the poor first impression.

This dash is a broken mess.. trying to rearrange sections/tiles makes the whole system completely unresponsive... I know this is alpha branch but man, this is the worst I've seen it.

You mustve never been a part of the alpha for NXOE a couple years ago. My XB1 was damn near useless for a week. Get out the alpha and go beta if this is a problem for you.

Why's it still a chore to close a game? Or is it just me that can't find the quit option easily?

Reason why I opted out after being a beta tester for about 3 years. I am fine getting the updates when they release.

I have a feeling the UI is going to annoy me one way or another because this is still Microsoft we're talking about here.

I usually mash the home button and then with the app/game highlighted, I just press the Menu Button and down to quit. Easy.

Press the start/view/menu button (whatever the one on the right is) on the tile from either the guide or the home screen and the option will be there.

That's what I do then. I thought there was a quicker way. Why couldn't they just add a quit/close game option after a long home button press.

After watching the windows central overview, I have some impression.

First, the horizontal layout of the guide seems counterintuitive, when it was vertical it looked like an extension of the of the screen. Really dislike what they compressed to the friends and messages lists, one of the great thing of the current Xbox UI is that I can easily access to friend while playing without interrupting much of the game screen.

The home pins looks useless, there is too little information and most seems useless. It would have been better to have a selection of LFG for homed games. The way out is presented, overimposes the game image over my background image.

Again, to many adds. It's incredibly confusing to have adds by your current game. That spot should be for your recent apps. And, for god's sake, reduce the adds.

I guess because they have the resume feature running. Maybe they could add a full quit option instead of resuming but I am not sure that many people would want that.

Guide is fast as hell now. Home is ugly as hell now.

This is my problem. They seem to be focusing a lot on speed and customization, but no focus is actually on the sleekness of the design or how intuitive is it. Its fucking ugly. It being fast doesnt make up for the fact that everytime a look at it i wanna vomit. I mean imagine if Apple did something like this lol, theyd get trashed. Theres no attention to detail.

The customizable pins are way too big, why is taking all that room this necessary?? Then they force the mixer feeds in the friend pins, as if having a dedicated mixer tab wasn't already enough for that....

Then that top image of the last thing you used, so ugly when its an app. Everything seems to take way too much room and isnt even visually pleasing. Literally no effort is put on the visual appeal of the design. The way it is now is fine, why change it to make it ugly......who liked this?? Who approved this design?? It looks like it was made by amateurs. This is still microsoft isnt it?? I already despise the minimalist win10 design and this seems to shove that even further down your throat, only much much uglier.

This honestly makes me wanna just keep using my ps4 pro as my primary platform, and im not even joking.

All I want to do is boot a video game console and have a list of my games sorted alphabetically or by last played and maybe have folders if I can be arsed to set them up. Why is this so hard for them?

Spot on, never been much of a fan of PSN and Live was always my much preferred preference but with Xbox One as the years pass, more and more I find faults with it and it ruins my experience of the console. I'm sick of it to be honest.

I don't think it has been posted but here are the known issues for this first build:

KNOWN ISSUES:

Installations may fail

Apps may fail to install immediately after taking the update
Workaround: Reboot your console immediately after updating to the latest system update

Pins on Home

Moving and editing pin blocks may cause console to crash to Home
Workaround: None at this time

Xbox Insider Hub loses focuses

Upon opening ‘Quickpoll' from the main menu, the Xbox Insider Hub will lose focus, impacting use of the app
Workaround: Return to Home briefly before re-opening the Xbox Insider Hub

Xbox Insider Hub may not launch properly

You may experience sign-in or launch issues when using the Xbox Insider Hub
Workaround: Remove your Profile from the console in Settings and re-download prior to launching Xbox Insider Hub

I understand and agree with most of the criticisms, but I hope you guys in the alpha are submitting feedback on the site so the development team gets your views of the new update directly. I mean, it's a work-in-progress, but this thing needs some serious tweaking from preview members' input with only about three months to go before they likely roll out. Maybe we can get them to seriously rethink the home screen and improve pins.

Boot, Xbox button, my games and apps... Massive list.

Not really a boot and full list on the dash, but it's as close as we will get until/if MS increase the number of pins.

It's because the native apps don't have a 'game hub' and therefore don't have any artwork uploaded. They should sort it out, it was the same in the last dash.

Been doing that since preview programme started, feels like a waste of time these days.

Am I the only one who hates the new window/tab system when using the guide? I don't see why they would open new windows and take up more screen space instead of the old one window way.

Calm Killer

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
I enjoy the layout so far.

Pros:
Quick and snappy.
Easy to navigate.
Compact and simple.

Cons:
Less Pins now. I wanted more.
Home screen. If I pin something to home. I can not organize them in the order I want. I want pins to be the first thing I get when I move down. I have to repin everything in a specific order to get this currently. This means I will most likely not use the Home function at all.
I wish the tile on the home screen was transparent so I could see the background.

Shouldn't be too hard, just use screenshots from the applications storefront if the developer didn't set a hero background.

I believe this is a bug. There was a tutorial on moving blocks, but when I try myself the X1 just crashes to a black screen. For moving oins themselves within the block I think they made it so now press start or menu or whatever that button is called?

Press X to remove it - it's an option, not mandatory.

You can't actually remove the one that is in the marketing materials. Currently that tab is an Xbox Insiders section asking for feedback.

I agree with him though. There is no reason that should be a high priority on the screen. If I want to follow someone, I will go into the friends section to do it.

Maybe the fact the reaction to the new UI has been almost universally negative will encourage them to pull it, because I have to admit what they have there is a clear step back from what we currently have.

The current vertical sidebar that pops out when you hit your home button is pretty much perfect as it is.

Universally negative? I hate this update but I've seen plenty of plaudits for the team on social media today.
