Latest Xbox One Update releases to Insiders Today (Fluent Design)

The more I see and or read about this new update the more I worry that they're going to go through with it...

I think they should just keep the current dash and refine that rather than dump this massive step backwards on us, what are they thinking?

This update has honestly taken away almost all excitement I had for Scorpio, still DAY1 but with great apprehension.

The reason they do this is because its a trick to make the UI faster. As they do not need to populate the full list each time you get on that tab they can download the necessary data in the background instead. People ask for a faster UI have to understand that the UI is still heavily dependent to your internet connection by the need to download the social graph from Xbox Live each time you do a new log in.

The "Social graph" is the structure all your social data is stores on Xbox Live and includes Friends, Activities and such. The "Social Graph" has to be downloaded each time you log into the system and is cached after the initial download on your console but is still updated driven by events raised by Xbox Live.

Making the UI 'faster' by making it slower to get the information you want is so goddamn backwards.

How is making us have to click more times to get to the stuff we want an improvement?? STOP CHANGING THINGS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT!

Stop adding f**king group suggestion boxes and tip boxes in prominent first things you see areas of the homepage, NO ONE CARES.

>_<

It feels like yesterday when they revamped the OS interface and they are doing it again? I don't understand microsoft when they do these things yeary.

It's a shame that I still prefer the early years of xbox one's OS, it was simple and reasonable, sure it could have done with some quality of life features they added in and the quick menu overlay stuff instead of snap but man, this new stuff is trash to me.

I still don't understand why it would slow things down. It's not data that requires low latency, reaction, so you can process it in a background task and only update the UI when it is ready instead. There is absolutely no reason to block the user input for any perceptible time just to update some text and pictures.
(to be fair it seems much better on that regard in this version of the dashboard, but it took long enough...)

Getting to your friends (and by default things like inviting to parties, sending messages, etc)
Getting to achievement leaderboard
Getting to your achievements
Getting to your last played game if you open an app (Before you had to flick down and press A, now it's flick down, flick right, A)
Getting to your notifications
Getting to your messages
Moving your pins around

And plenty more I'm sure. Seems like the only thing that's easier to get to in this update is moving more than one game to an external hard drive, which didn't need a UI change to happen.

I think the guide is better horizontally and it should be good/better than the old, I love the idea of being able to switch tabs in the guide while scrolling down without having to go back to the tabs again like you had to in the old one so that's definitely a step forward. But just about everything actually inside the guide is 2 steps backwards. Making switching tabs easier doesn't help when the information you want to see in those tabs isn't there any more without digging into menus. The old guide made horizontally would be near perfect.

Of course they'll go through with it, but from past Alpha's they've made pretty big leaps with the final product. Almost every Alpha dash I've been a part of on the XB1 has been a buggy frustrating mess but things slowly come together in time. Hopefully this will be the same.

Looks like it needs work and refinement but could be good if they listen to feedback.

Depending on your internet speed and your amount of data it can take several seconds to load all the data. At least thats my experience when programed against the Xbox Live API. If those downloads are not finished you cannot populate your views with the data aimed to be displayed.

Here is a pretty good post that sums up what's wrong with the new Dashboard:

https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/6sjmmz/the_case_against_the_new_xbox_ui/

Seriously, this needs to change. Worst UI layout ever. :(

Came to post this.

I kinda wish I was in preview just to officially submit feedback on just how awful this looks.

I'm not one to complain about the dash, as I've liked almost every update they're done so far. Heck, I even was fine with the original design. This one, however, is awful.

I'm on the fence.

It seems quicker for what I want to do although the icons all look fat. I like smaller icons / pins.

I just can't put my figure on my unease. Maybe it's just change.

i feel like it could be great with some small changes.

reworking the guide to vertical again, removing suggested friends everywhere, and more useful "add to home"

Like why cant I add my favorites to home? Not one of them, all of them? Why do i have to single item scroll through them all? Why does it take more "clicks" to get places?

at the end of the day though, if the goal was speed of menus, they got that at least

Needs a lot of work. Remove the dumb crap off the home page which nobody uses and replace with some context sensitive links. Like LFG for the current game to the left.

Are fans not upset at the ads front and center? Ms vowed to never do that again yet it seems central

Does MS ever explain WHY it changes the design so damn often? I dont get it.

But why not populate it with cached data, and update it when the new data has been downloaded ? Isn't that how most online content is supposed to work ?

One thing I do like is the new guide, although it needs some optimisations for certain tasks that should be one button presses away.

The only thing I've used on my Xbox home screen in the last several months are the advertisements/games with gold links ironically enough. Don't really care what they do with the home screen. The new guide needs some optimization, but I do like the pages structure for diving deeper into an area of functionality.

I think most of the "workflow" optimization would be easy to do. Make the friends list the first page on the friends tab and put everything else in the first item on the list that leads to a sub-page. They could probably do this for every tab pretty easily. Not sure why they changed the tabs to menus that lead to the most important functions instead of surfacing those on top. They've been pretty good in the past about maintaining or improving the taskflow of the guide.

Cached data has to be downloaded first too. The "Social graph" is updated even you are offline because activities happens, gamerscores of friends changes, gamerpics are changed. The moment you turn off your console or you disconnected from Xbox Live your locally cached data is not longer valid.

It'd be fascinating to see what dashboard usage habits actually are because I've got no idea what people actually do on them as the norm. If it's the same as me, if it's wildly different, whatever.

I think an attractive and customizable home screen is huge for a console, and I still can't believe how they thought this new design was acceptable.

The first bar under the big empty space with the massive plain text is some people I don't know and/or want to see, some tips I don't need, and promos for stuff I'm not interested in 99% of the time.

Half of the next bar is stuff other than my content. Almost everything on it is not relevant to me. Get that crap out of the way.

Let me customize it to show the content I want to access fast on MY console, not some people or crap that's suggested for me.

This redesign really aggravates me.

Why not keep the cache though ? I'd rather see outdated data for a few seconds but be able to navigate around my menus. And even assuming you don't want to display stuff that could be outdated (like promotions or things that could be deceptive), just put static placeholders in there.
I don't mind if my friends gamerscore is a few seconds (minutes) late, but I do care if the focus I'm controlling won't react to inputs, even for a few tenths of a second.

I painted it a little bit black and white for explanation purposes. With the current UI there are signs they reuse cached data but checking data valid is more expensive than just update the cache sometimes.

Needs work. I don't like the home page, the border outline on selected tiles is way too thick, why is friends not already open in guide...

Guide is really damn quick though in terms of snappiness.

I wish they would detail their rollout for more of the features of the 1710 update. I'm guessing we won't get anything significant until Gamescom to go with Xbox One X news.

Yeah dash is super quick but they need more tweaks. Hell, that's why it's in the Alpha ring! Interesting to see how it develops.

Lol. Sony's UI has been better than the Xbox UI from Day 1, and continues to be better. They have no reason to make changes.

Well, take it easy there. Have you tried to navigate it while a game is running in the background? Its borderline un-usable and becomes choppy and slow as fuck. And im on ps4 pro.

im in the beta ring, so hopefully by then they have some tweaks. After sitting on this for a while and thinking about the layout, it feels a bit like a step backwards. Sure, i can see where they wanted user customization, but looks very limited especially from what im hearing you all comment on.

Thank goodness for this preview! If this was the ui refresh for the public, oh lordy. lol

"No reason to make changes"
Hahahahahahahahaha, that's not very constructive. There are so many things PSN could be doing better, no service is perfect.

Microsoft has been killing it on these OS updates. Sony is such a dog.

Agreed, though there is still room for improvement from Microsoft with this latest release...to say the least.

I don't get how people can favor the PS4 OS, except for the lack of ads on the front page and the vertical layer of common/system tools (which Microsoft has replicated with the left-side guide). From forcing apps into a singular folder and shoving adds into the middle of said folder, to the wasted space on the front page...it's not a good UI.

Though if I'm being fair, the PS4 UI is an improvement over the PS3 UI. But not by much.

Good, its a terrible update. I dont want this update at all. Especially with the Xbox One X coming soon and THIS is what they come up with as a new UI? Jesus.

i think the preview of the xbox dash being fluent in that video a while ago had more promise than this! LOL

i wanna try the new guide tho, but that's it.

After longer use I'm starting to be okay with it.

Dont mind the extra press for friends because they finally seperated friends and clubs in guide.

One last problem I have is with notifications. Theres no notification alert under it and honestly its kinda outta the way. It should be next to friends imo.

Also the animation when look at achievements isnt that hot. Boxes need to be made smaller to fit more on the screen so it doesnt have to scroll down as much.

Other than that I like it. Really fast and doing things a lot faster like getting to games and apps and the store.

Store still needs a huge revamp tho.

These very changes were feedback given from the community. Why would he stop listening when its terrible?

Because I don't think he does listen to be honest. This preview programme has been going on for years and it's always one step forward two or three back. Even things like Upload Studio, I expected them to be bettering Sony in that regard but Share Factory is more slicker experience imo.

Nothing personal, im just not a fan of what he does for Xbox. What I should of said in my previous post is, is there anyone else to send it to who at least might recognise it.

The software devs over at MS "must" be gamers, right? Because I can't fathom anyone of them saying this update was better than the past UI. It's faster, yes, but there's so much bloat I can't give any fucks about how fast it is.

I don't think some of them are at the Xbox division. Would love to see some fresh faces join the team, they need it particularly above Phil Spencer.

I loved everything about this update but the home screen.

Don't know why Ms doesn't just make the home screen like the start menu on win mobile, but with even more tile sizes than desktop.

It would be completely customizable and in a way that is very convenient to use with a controller

I have to wonder if that's their goal but they are just rolling it out slowly? Because for all the times customizable was talked about, there are limited areas that are customizable, and what you can add to them are also very limited (no apps able to be added to the home outside of pins, which now have less spots available?).
