Nope. I'm calling GAF overwhelmingly male, 20-30, nerd/geek-ish and American (but then again maybe I am calling GAF dumb).

Im actually offended right now

*goes back to watching Dexter

wait... shit :(

So not worth it
I never post about Netflix shows on GAF outside of maybe a post here or in the Netflix thread. I would imagine it is the same for most people. With the release format you just watch it on your own pace and don't spend time dicussing and theorizing between episodes since there is no point to that, since you can just watch the next episode and see the conclusion.

Don't think I posted about Ozark yet anywhere and that is my favorite new show so far this year.

We are finally getting some info on Katrina: American Crime Story and it is bleak as hell.
I have learned that FX’s Ryan Murphy limited series Katrina: American Crime Story is moving full steam ahead, acquiring the book Five Days At Memorial by Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink as source material.
...
In Five Days At Memorial, Fink, a physician as well as a writer, takes an unflinching look at the decisions doctors made at Memorial Medical Center, a hospital in New Orleans that was overwhelmed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina.

The doctors, who lost electrical power and backup and were not supported by hospital owners who had no generator mechanic on staff or even an evacuation plan, were forced to make calculated decisions on which patients to save.

Some of those who were not expected to make it were shot up with morphine and left to die. This was four days into a devastating hurricane where generators failed, the intensive care wing sweltered in darkness and chaos and gunshots rang out in the areas outside the hospital. A day later, the entire hospital was evacuated.

The book focuses on an attempt to prosecute Dr. Pou and two nurses for homicide after an investigation showed elevated levels of morphine and other drugs in 23 patients who died at the hospital.
‘Queen Of The South’ Renewed For Season 3 By USA
Three weeks ahead of the Season 2 finale, USA Network has ordered a third season of its hit drama series Queen of the South, from Fox 21 Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions, for premiere in 2018.

The series has been a solid ratings performer for the network since its 2016 premiere.

NBC is trying their hand at a Munsters reboot again~

Inspired by the original series, the half-hour single-camera The Munsters, now in development, follows members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn. (In the original, the Munsters resided at the famous 1313 Mockingbird Lane address in the city of Mockingbird Heights, a fictional suburb in California.)

Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman will write the script and will executive produce with Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions’ from Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker. Universal TV is the studio.

First they came for Seeso...and I said nothing because why the fuck would I watch anything on Seeso?

There's actually quite a few great shows on Seeso, though the best are British imports.

I highly recommend every fellow American watch Flowers on there as they have the exclusive rights in this region. 6 episode Channel 4 dark-comedy-sometimes-drama starring Julian Barratt (Mighty Boosh, Nathan Barley) and Olivia Colman about a really fucked up family.

Seriously good.

It's a $4/mo sub but you can get a free trial. Honestly well worth $4 to just binge the best stuff on Seeso before it closes down.

I've heard great things about Flowers but I always forget it exists. Maybe Netflix or Amazon can get the rights to it now that Seeso is dead.

Like, just use the free trial?

Anyway, here's some other good stuff on there I think everyone should watch if they haven't yet:

Monty Python's Flying Circus
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
The Mighty Boosh
Nathan Barley
The Kids In The Hall
Fawlty Towers
Black Adder
The Office UK (is that on netflix too?)

Lesser shows that are more hit or miss but I have found enjoyable:

The IT Crowd
Snuffbox

I never really got hooked by any of the original shows but people say good things about Take My Wife. Bajillion Dollar Properties has a lot of Comedy Bang Bang regulars but I thought it was just okay.

Just in general, there was Walking Dead/Breaking Bad before Game of Thrones, but I don't see any shows that could possibly replace Game of Thrones in the zeitgeist.

Stranger Things dominated the pop cultural conversation last summer - we'll see if they can keep it up come October.

I'm fully expecting a True Detective type arch on the audience response to that one. Though obviously they don't have to do the "itssamaaaaaze!!" thing now anymore, so maybe the second season will fare better.

But then I am not even remotely interested in watching it either. Might binge it if good.

It'll be interesting to see if the writers can pivot the show from being a vapid puzzlebox into a truly compelling drama. At any rate, I doubt the audience will care as long as they keep the spectacle and mysteries going.

The Deuce may pick up a lot of viewers, especially with the cast it has - James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, created by David Simon (The Wire).

I don't see anything non sci-fi/fantasy/genre becoming the next Walking Dead/Game of Thrones.

I mean, I guess there's a chance that The Deuce breaks out if it's especially pulpy or whatever, but Simon generally isn't interested in making things that appeal to the mainstream. The only shows that he's ever produced that have gotten viewers are Generation Kill and Homicide Life on the Street.

Like, just use the free trial?

Feels like this thread failed me, I am just now hearing about The Deuce. NYC in the 70s-80s is one of my favorite things to learn about

But seeing how this comes out next month and the trailer only have 90k views, HBO isn't doing much promotion

Surprised were getting two shows with autistic main characters close together (ABCs Doctor show, and Netflix's one later this month). I dont know if another attempt at the miracle worker doctor dramas will catch on for ABC

HBO generally doesn't really do much social promotion beyond sending things out into the world. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I feel like Simon gets a free pass anyway - no one will watch the show, it will get some critical acclaim, and he'll get another show a few years down the line. Whether it's because HBO believes in him or he has some dirt on everyone there is another story. lol

Certainly, I doubt HBO goes into David Simon projects with the bars for success set terribly high. I imagine expectations are modest, and they know Simon's stuff is valuable as one corner of their current and past catalogs, particularly for audiences who care more about grounded dramas than fantastical shows.

Counter thought: Less theories, more shock & awe style popularity. House of Cards was huge, mostly due to a proficiency in delivering gif material and having Fincher on board. Stranger Things was, for about a whole month, too. 13 Reasons Why and Orange Is The New Black as well.

And somewhat curiously, despite the onslaught of 'people talking about' Westworld looking bigger and lengthier, it almost immediately died with the finale. So when correcting for broadcast schedules, I suspect you'll find that the enduring conversations are actually the more important one when predicting whether people will watch following seasons.

Sense8 for instance, had basically neither, to my knowledge. Meaning it simply didn't generate clear attention (using only the 'talking about' HBO method in this argument, obviously Netflix and Amazon also use user viewing data) to validate its budget.

The 'talking about' HBO thing is a quote from Aaron Sorkin btw, as an answer to 'wtf' HBO's business model is. Apparently they only care about whether people are talking it. If they do, renew. If they don't, cancel. It's a prestige model, but also surprisingly effective.

Also, on the topic of Netflix, I do hope all seasons of Twin Peaks will eventually make it back onto it.

I shit talk the quality of a lot of these Netflix projects, but Ozark was a nice hidden gem. I figured it would be basura the way Netflix just dropped it with little fanfare. but it ended up being one of the stronger original releases I've seen from them.

I would love to get a peak at just a few of their metrics. Like how GLOW did compared to the 1st season of Orange is the New Black in the same time frame, how many people actually watch(ed) Stranger Things, etc.

Ugh, now we're reviving shows that not only ran their course, but that did so only a couple of years ago.

Traditional TV really is dying now.

It will probably be even bigger, although I think they should have released in the middle of October rather than on Halloween. I think reading an interview of theirs said they will only only have a few seasons, possibly only three or four.

I get wanting to bring back Frasier, but I don't get wanting to bring back 30 Rock at all. I mean, I loved the show and it won Emmys but it never got good ratings at all during its original run. I'd be thrilled to see more if the quality was still there, but it doesn't seem like a good choice for NBC.

But what if Jack Donaghy is now the president.

Nooo, I wanted a season 2 eventually :(I love boyband

Dungey said she remains bullish about the prospects for American Idol—“I can’t wait; I’m so thrilled,” she enthused—despite the soft ratings for ABC’s music competition series Boy Band this summer. “Boy Band was a creative swing for us that we were excited to explore. …It didn’t connect with audiences in quite the way we’d hoped,” said Dungey, explaining that by definition, Boy Band has a “narrow” appeal, while Idol is far more “broad.”

Netflix cancelled Gypsy. *crickets* *tumbleweeds*

I find it weird that as cancellation-happy as Netflix is getting, they still haven't officially killed Flaked, but I can attribute that to them forgetting the show exists, just like everyone else.

I couldn't be bothered with Gypsy. It didn't seem to have an interest in hooking you as a viewer. The first episode would do stuff like have a character almost get hit by a car to artificially beef up the tension.

Plus it reminded me too much of Chance on Hulu. I didn't hate it...yet, just wasn't strong enough to justify my time with so many other options these days.

It's smart, but I honestly think even 4 seasons may be pushing it for this particular story. They're positioning season 2, not as a second season, but as a sequel to the first, so I think 3 seasons would be perfect because they're clearly aiming for a more filmic story structure and most film franchises go the traditional trilogy route.

GLOW renewed for season 2

Oh cool! Seemed kind of on the bubble, good critical reception but the social media response seemed tepid. Didn't explode in popularity like supernatural kids or suicide high school. Good to know quality will keep it alive at least. Sorry Gypsy.

Putting all that aside, I wouldn't want to see these kids getting much older any way.

Oh look, Frasier and 30 rock are really on the wishlist
http://tvline.com/2017/08/10/frasier-revival-nbc-kelsey-grammer-cast/

Love Frasier, but the show had a great run where everything wrapped up satisfyingly without overstaying it's welcome (yeah S8-10 were weaker, but S11 went out a winner). They told an arc in the character's life and he'd moved on by the end there's no big unanswered questions or whatever the fuck Will & Grace needed to fix. Plus showrunners aside, Chris Lloyd is still on Modern Family and you'd need the GOAT Joe Keenan, whose talents have sadly gone to waste since then.

Plus the nostalgia level for Frasier isn't exactly Friends tier. Slightly older audience I think.

I agree with you tbh. I'm not really sure on the differences between a Season 2 and a sequel, because I feel like those should be the same thing.
it's not, it's on 10/27.
Oh! Close enough lol.

I can watch all of it before Halloween ;)
I think I'm going to divide it to two episodes a night and finish on Halloween...although I haven't looked at a Calendar, and it's a little early to be making Halloween plans. Is it even confirmed it's 8 episodes again?

Jeez, RIP ABC?

This HBO hack is getting serious.

They've leaked new episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Barry, and The Deuce.
Like I said in that thread, The Deuce will get more PR from this leak than from actually coming out next month. lol

So I'm Dying Up Here ended. No idea if it'll be renewed, but it's like a 10 hour Marc Maron podcast where you don't give a shit about anyone involved. At least Melissa Leo was being Melissa Leo-ey, if you're into watching her act.
