Undertale (PS4/Vita) |OT| Sans Keyboard

I'd definitely implore people to stick with it as long as they can stomach it. It's a very demanding game but very rewarding and extremely worthwhile by the end (and long before that, but it really makes good on what came before with its conclusion).

It's ok for people to not like things.

It's also ok for people to recommend another to keep trying for a little while longer.

Were it not so I would have never continued with Final Fantasy XII after getting turned off by the combat system and interaction. Now I love it.

Of course it's not always the same conclusion for others but you never know.

I think I'm nearing the end half of the game and I have to say there is a hell of a lot of personality and charm to this game in all aspects. It reminds me very much of Earthbound but at the same time is not merely mimicking that series, but is it's own game. Great dialogue and the characters are pretty memorable for what they're supposed to be.

Nice little game and I've enjoyed it immensely thus far. I'm so glad that games like this exist. Glad I am able to experience this with no preconceptions.

$20 well spent.

Did my post say it wasn't okay, or did it throw shade at someone that didn't like it? I just think it's a game that's a grower and because it's unconventional it 'improves' as you get more used to it.

It was a very rewarding experience for me and I wouldn't want someone to give up a hour in if, again, they can stomach it.
For those who have played the PS4 version, what do you prefer?

D-pad or stick?
Definitely d-pad for all of the 'combat'. I would never have beaten
Muffet
if I was limited to the stick.

I just played about a half hour, I really like it so far, I always thought from screenshots that it seemed like it was aping Earthbound's style too hard but it's really charming.

Couple quick questions for people who have already played it (very minor spoilers):

I'm going in mostly blind but one thing I do know is that there's multiple endings depending on how you play the game. I also know that one method/ ending is called "genocide." It seems obvious already that you can play the game as a straight RPG, killing the random encounter monsters and getting experience, but Toriel doesn't like this. Presumably the "genocide" ending is what you get for playing this way? So far I've been resolving everything non-violently since that seems like the "good" method of playing, but I did accidentally Devour one of the vegetable monsters. Basically I'm worried I already screwed up my game by inadvertently murdering something. Is this the case?

And second, how much should I think about stuff like this? I very, very replay games and though the writing is charming I'm already finding the battles in this repetitive, so I'm guessing there's very, very little chance I'll ever do a second play through. With that in mind should I play a certain way to make the most of my one experience?

Its gonna sound dumb, but play the way you want and dont worry about the endings. The game will guide you, eventually. For now, trust your instincts

The gameplay itself isnt for everyone (i didnt like it) but honestly there isnt too much of it since its a short game, if you dont like it the games still worth it for the story.

TROPHY UPDATE:

1.04 is out for PS4 (Vita will be a couple days yet).

Minor trophy spoilers (only need to read this if you were impacted by the bug, really):
Once you update to 1.04, if you get an item in-game, it should trigger the missing trophy/trophies.

Yeah I just got the update! Thank you! I'll test out the trophy as soon as I tear myself away from
Temmie Village
.

Just finished the game and... Wow. That was something. Pretty damn good game if you're into oldschool JRPG type games. Excellent writing and the gameplay never drags.

Well worth a purchase.

That specific action is fine for the ending you're going for. I did the same thing.

Regarding the repetitive combat:
The game gets a lot less tedious with random encounters past the first area. After that you'll rarely encounter the same monsters more than once or twice(and when it's more frequent, it's usually combined with other monsters, which mixes up the patterns), keeping the combat more fresh. Play however you want, but I'll say that you haven't messed up your original plan by devouring(all you did was take a small bite out of the carrot)

Love. To know anymore would be spoilerish. But it has a lot of hilarious moments and the music is amazing.

i don't mind getting spoiled, i just don't want to waste money on an overrated game, please tell me how the game works

i heard a lot about Undertale, can someone sum up what made this game great ?? what is it about ?

"RPG where you don't have to kill anyone."

Of course you can play it like an old jrpg and just mash the attack button but the writing and characters can make you regret that.

Battles are more dynamic than just waiting for your turn, you can evade damage in a "mini shmup mode".

The game also likes to break the fourth wall and surprise you about saves

Don't forget that it has FUCKING PHENOMENAL MUSIC!

It's a charming retro RPG where you don't have to kill anyone. Fun characters, interesting story. If that sounds interesting at all, just play it. If not, don't, because I don't see how spoiling it for you would make you any more interested in it.

Just got it. Thanks for working so fast!

RPG with turn based combat in the form of little bullet hell shmup segments is how the game works on a *very* simplified surface level. You can kill stuff or talk your way out of it.

It's ok for people to not like things.

I think people should stick with things more. I'm sure we all have tons of experience of toughing it out with games that start out really good but deteriorate as it goes on, but we rarely seem to extend that same mentality to the possibility of the reverse. So many games I've played start to blossom well past the point I know others would give up, and it was worth it.

How does knowing the mechanics let you know if a game is overrated?

All I know is xviper is VERY good at knowing when a game is overrated. :p

Is it easy enough to come back to
Papyrus' house
for those dog trophies later in the game? I don't have enough coins for all the trophies at the moment and I'm worried about walking off too far.

Yes, you can return later.

I think the point of no return is the place where you get the last story trophy. Until then you can come back to the house. Personally I just farmed gold in the first fighting zone after the house to get rid of that quickly

Sounds like a good plan. I'll do that tonight.

You can trick all of the monsters in the game into not fighting you in hilarious ways, all while dodging their bullet hell attacks.

And the writing is the best in any video game since Mother.

This too. The "Undertale" main theme is actually now one of my favorite songs ever made.

Been busy playing Sonic Mania so I don't know when I'll get to this but Undertale was probably my favorite game of 2015 so I look forward to playing it again. Hope the trophies are funny.

If you're gunning for
the pacifist true ending
you can basically do it before
the date with Alphys and the Secret Lab
otherwise i recommend doing it before entering the Core.

Don't spoil the game for people, especially when they haven't asked for it and most certainly not in plain text

I dunno, that's one of the hardest cues to pick up on.
"You won't escape?" Legit too subtle for me. We're fighting.

Finished my neutral run.
Game just didn't click with me. The humor didn't land for me (maybe I'm just too old :/) and the 'charm' I heard so much about was just too goofy to be endearing. Maybe it's that goofiness that is endearing to some people? I dunno...

Spoilering just in case:
Things like Alphys annoying status updates/texts... I KNOW they were supposed to be annoying, but goddamn...
Mettaton and anything having to do with that piece of shit was just obnoxious. No fun allowed, I know, it just didn't work with me.
The part at the end when you get to ASGORE's home I really thought was about to go into something legitimately emotional and grounded, but... no.

Music was great, but that's really my primary compliment. All the "a new generation's Earthbound" comments I've seen over the years just seems like hyperbole. This game doesn't have shit on Earthbound... or Mother 3, even on a base creative level.
There's a strong foundation there for Fox to work on with an Undertale 2 (larger dev team, higher budget), but bookend to bookend this game just felt like a little independent kickstarter project. Nothing wrong with that, but I expected more. My own fault. By comparison, as an overall production by mostly a single person chasing that 16-bit retro craze, Stardew Valley was far more impressive to me.

In the end I'm glad I experienced it and I imagine I'll enjoy the OST for years to come, but overall it just wasn't my thing.
Maybe I'll try for the pacifist run. ;)

I think that in this case it's fine. Especially if someone doesn't seem to understand and eventually gets frustrated and goes the
other route

The game just tries too hard to have the quirkiness of the Mother series without realizing that it runs deeper than just "haha that airplane has a hat on".
