Fine work! How did you do the rust on the swords?
Thanks! If you're talking about the guts it's just a basecoat of Rakarth Flesh followed by a wash of Druchii Violet and a wash of Carroburg Crimson where it meets the armor. The horns and bone are also basecoated in the same color but instead Agrax Earthshade is used in successive layers to give an impression of fading the close you get to the point. Both methods are very easy to do.

The swords are done with a base coat of Leadbelcher, a coat of Typhus Corrosion for texture, and then build up rust with a dry brushing of Ryza Rust, little by little until you get the desired result. Finally, use a bright silver like Stormhost Silver to give the illusion of chipped rust along the edges.
Rakarth FLesh is what my highest highlight on mine I posted on the last page after all the washes and stuff. Had to try lots of colors to find it. I was tyring to use lots of sepia wash to give it that Blanch type of coloration. It worked great but then when you need to clean stuff up later you have to find the color that happens to match all the crazy stained color.

Since I have joined this game in December I have noticed that gw loves releasing limited time products to promote their main game and then what was once loved lives in eternity and gets ignored. Not sure if I like this at all. Kinda wish there were skirmish rules like kill team still around instead of shadow war which even seems to be almost forgotten.

OK, everyone! I think I am done. This is my first big undertaking, having only done a handful of space marines from 8th edition starter, so any honest criticism would be greatly appreciated. I've decided at this point I'm done messing with it, and am ready to move onto my Stormraven. But I would like to hear about things I could possibly do better or work on. For instance...I've done no highlights except dabbing each dimple on the top with a slightly, slight brighter red and no dry brushing, as every attempt ended in nightmare. I would eventually like to get better at those two things. I also originally planned on having 4 diamonds on each knee pad, but when I started rubbing each of the decal/stickers off, I realized they were individual and I couldn't slide them off in groups of 4. Then I panicked, because I knew I couldn't re-arrange them in a shape of 4 without looking like crap. So I slipped one diamond on each knee and moved on.
And yeah...my color scheme is all over the place. I love white. I love black. I love deep red. But...my white was clumpy and complete garbage, so I started using red way more than I originally intended to.

Your Knight looks great! I know you didn't do it here but I really highly recommend doing highlights in the future. It actually makes a much bigger difference than you'ed realize! Dry brushing is also pretty easy for pretty great results so don't be afraid to give it a go!
You say the color scheme is all over the place but I think it works really well. The warmness of the red really helps bring out the cooler tones of the white and black and really makes it pop. Honestly, if you had less red you could have ran the risk of making it a little too monochromatic. If its any consolation, I really like the single diamond on the knee. Its very subdued but certainly eye catching.
The only other criticism I could give is, try and slap a few more of those decals on there maybe. At least on the Banner and maybe the shoulders. Other than that though the model looks stellar!

I can't thank everyone enough for their kind words and giving feedback.
I thought dry brushing would be easy, but I keep winding up with either too much paint on brush, and I accidentally paint over colors heavily, or too little, and I can't notice a difference with what I'm dry brushing. I definitely need to keep practicing. As for decals, you're right. I especially need to get something on that banner between legs.Your Knight looks great! I haven't yet, but I'm thinking some BS background having to pertain to a House that knows part of or helps protect the secret history of the Blood Ravens. Sadly, I don't know a lot of lore to be able to make something up quite yet. But Blood Raven-y would be good.
Like on the top red panel? I put some violet shade in there, but it isn't standing out very well, is it...hrm. Maybe I'll try Agrax to darken it up and give a bit more contrast.

you did fantastic, and painted it in a smart way. That is to say, down the road, years from now if you want to touch up the paint job its very easy to build on what you laid out.

The best advice I could give is when you dry brush is to do very light flicks of the brush to gradually build up the color. Try and focus the top half of the bristles to be what makes contact with the edge your working with.
If you find yourself having too much paint on the brush. Try and remove enough paint off the bristles until the paint is hardly noticeable. Then you should be good to go.
Also, if you don't have one already. I'd recommend getting a small dry brush. It'll let you be much more precise and help you control where the paint goes a lot easier.

VA I think your color selection is good.
For white I've been doing Ulthuan Grey with a pure white highlight. Ulthuan Grey gives you more depth because you can highlight with pure white but if you use just pure white you're out of options for highlighting, can't go a step up basically. Agrax Earthshade is a good recess shade for white and red.
Looking forward to seeing the completed base.

Well I think I'm done with painting and modeling for a long time. My Gabriel Angelos model from Forge World got ruined today while I was painting because it slipped out of my hand and fell like half a foot but APPARENTLY that's a high enough drop to break the top half of the model and scrape off a bunch of paint.
That's $80 dollars down the drain.
I feel like this happens to me every time I paint something. Something horrible happens and ruins my models. I've been able to fix "or live with" this happening till now but today was the last straw.
I was so excited to paint Angelos and make him the HQ for my Blood Ravens army.
I'm honestly not sure if I'll come back to painting again...
That's $80 dollars down the drain.

Real bad. It also didn't help that after it happened I was so angry and defeated I spiked it into a trash can. So there is really no fixing it now. lol
It's such a bummer. He was coming along perfect too.

Yep, they're pretty much the good guy space marine chapter, which is why the lore needs more of them. I guess the upside to being in stasis is that nothing awful gets written and it gives them an opportunity to bring Vulkan back however they want. He seems like the next loyalist primarch to show up.
They're also one of the hardest armies to collect IMO. I feel like you need A+ painting and conversion skills to do them justice, which is fitting for a chapter renowned for their artisans.
Prepare to fortify A LOT of positions.
He's next for Horus Hersey. Forge World said so a few months ago.
Next loyalist to appear in 40k tho is still up in the air. It'll probably be either Russ or the Lion next.

I actually see a Crusading Dorn in 40k leading the Templars. The 40k primarch iterations will not be the same as the once were

About half way through Know No Fear. It is really good. Some epic stuff going on in that book. After reading so much chaos it is nice to get back to some loyalists.
After this I think I am going to start Fear to Tread. Then Angel Executioner, then Vengeful Spirit. After that I got no idea.

Gulliman should be the only Loyalist primarch. His characterization has been great and I hope it continues. Dark Imperium is well worth a read.
What he needs is a big friendly big "Don't-worry-about-daddy-Emprah-not-loving-us-anymore"-hug from his best brother Vulkan.

If The Beast survived, Vulkan surely did as well. Besides, he had already survived what presumably was the only known way to kill a perpetual and that was being stabbed by a Fulgurite spear. If he survived that, he can (and should) have survived a measly (but zoggin' massive) reactor explosion.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't Russ, Lion or Sanguinius. The 4 main traitor & loyalist chapters were always going to get priority.
