I don't like the idea that you can just switch from the speedy form to the powerful form without any drawbacks. If so why didn't the Saiyans in the Cell Saga just switch between normal SSJ and buff SSJ forms?

Because Trunks is dumb. At the very least switching to a buff form to launch projectiles is an obvious strategy that was used by Roshi way back in Dragonball.

I don't think the buff form was stronger than Goku's and Gohan's mastered SSJ in the Cell games anyway.

I thought it was one of the better episodes of the tournament so far. I'm not a fan of God coming back, but I've wanted to see Goku and Hit fight together for awhile and I like that the episode had a single focus.
Also Hit was a bad ass.
