PUBG's Xbox "exclusivity" is just as confusing as it was for ROTTB.

What if they haven't started working on a PS4 version yet? I mean they're not even done on PC and despite the sales, they are still a small team. Would it make people feel better if they just said? "We have no plans at the moment for PS4." Or would that be considered spin if it's on a white board somewhere?

gamescom 2017: Bluehole, Inc and Microsoft Announce Expanded Partnership for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
By Chang Han Kim, VP of Bluehole, Inc. and Executive Producer for PUBG posted on August 20, 2017 at 12:15 pm

Hello Xbox fans!

I'm CH Kim, Executive Producer of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) and VP at Bluehole. It is my pleasure to announce some exciting news for the Xbox player community around the world.

I have been working in the games industry developing online titles for 17 years now and have always wanted to develop a Battle Royale game. In 2016, after I was finishing up an MMORPG, I was given a chance to start a new project, so I decided to try something different and create the Battle Royale game that I always wanted to make.

While I was preparing for the project, I stumbled upon a guy calling himself PlayerUnknown – who we all know now as Brendan Greene – whom at that time was running Battle Royale mods on top of other games. I contacted Brendan right away and was glad to bring him into our project.

I have always thought that Battle Royale had an enormous potential in gaming, so I moved quickly to bring the standalone game that solely focuses on Battle Royale gameplay – an experience that I believed gamers wanted. The project started humbly with only 40 people on the team. We started from scratch and communicated closely with our community from a very early stage, receiving lots of user feedback during a pre-alpha, and two alpha tests in 2016. In March this year, we launched PUBG into Steam's Early Access and have continued to evolve our game ever since.

We pride ourselves on creating the first truly standalone Battle Royale game. The game's premise is simple, you are put into an island with 99 other strangers who compete with each other to scavenge for weapons and items in order to become the last man standing. The game mechanics are simple and intuitive, which made our game easy to dive into and fun to watch. We will continue evolving PUBG with our community so that it lives up to the attention it is getting, and we hope you will join us

Back in June at E3, we announced that PUBG will be launching exclusively on Xbox One in the Xbox Game Preview program in late 2017. Ever since then we have come to realize that we have a shared vision for the direction of the game with the Xbox team. This led to our decision on extending our partnership with Microsoft and I'm happy to announce it now includes Microsoft as the publisher for our PUBG on Xbox One.

By partnering with Microsoft, our team believes that we will be able to accelerate console development, while maintaining quality across all platforms, as well as giving us access to vast sales, marketing and publishing resources that will help us reach new fans to welcome to the PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds universe.

We are excited to continue and further strengthen our partnership with Microsoft and are super excited to meet the Xbox community. We will be launching exclusively on Xbox One in the Xbox Game Preview program later this year and we can't wait to see all the Xbox fans on the battlefield.

Fortnite is early access on PS4.

Was Ark? Elite? Long Dark? Slime Rancher? Conan?

I mean, yeah Fortnite, No Man's Sky and SFV
/s i bought both day 1
were, but those were the exceptions as they also got retail releases at the same time.

OT: This is obviously just going to be exclusive during the Early Access phase.

"all platforms"

Seems pretty clear to me.

Oh no MS is funding a PC port to their other Windows platform. Get the pitchforks guys.

Seriously though porting to both consoles with a single launch date takes more time and money. Also isn't this because MS has the early access shit and Sony doesn't?

It's coming to PS4 eventually, but they don't know when. Even if they came out and said it's coming to PS4 at some point they lose, because now it's "When?" "Why Xbox first?" "Sell outs!" ect..

On the topic of Phil saying he doesn't like "those" deals. Wasn't he talking about exclusive game content in Destiny 2 that would never be released elsewhere or is that stuff timed too?

"all platforms"

Seems pretty clear to me.

Yeah, MS helps them get on Xbox first faster than they could otherwise, which means they can get the PS4 version done quicker and also push PC updates. Although I feel console development might slow that bit maybe.

People need to stop expecting PlayStation announcements during Xbox conferences, that isn't what they are for. If a game isn't clearly announced as exclusive then it won't be.

I, for one, welcome our new PUBG overlords to the Sony ecosystem

(Seriously, salivating at the thought of PUBG on my PS4)

People should be happy that MS is jumping in. Means more resources. Resulting in probably a quicker release and a better release. For PS4 also.

Phil said he is against keeping content away from gamers. In this case he is providing assistance for the Xbox One version of the game, he is not keeping it away from other systems.

Some people reach way too far with this shit.

Their wording is intentionally confusing = it's not a real exclusive.
PUBG is big, the developer studio isn't. The PC version is far from being done and what they showed from the Xbox version looked really bad.
I bet MS approached them with a deal to help them release the game faster. Since they don't have the resources to develop the game for three platforms at once anyway, Bluehole said yes. Which was smart, I believe.
Microsoft can have one big game at least, while Bluehole gets the resources it needs.
Sony doesn't really care for now.

I'm not even sure why people are still asking about this. I thought it was fairly obvious since the beginning that this would be coming to the PS4 eventually.

It isn't really that far from 1.0 release and what they showed was PC version. There is no XBO footage out there.

Its a multi studio project that has sold 7 million copies to date.

That excuse doesnt work here.

Multi studio? I guess if you count two outside teams doing those maps, but core development is on Bluehole.

Just for clarity, you guys realize Bluehole Studio was self-publishing on Xbox One prior to this, right? I'm not sure if people realize that distinction... which is why the series of questions in the OP reads so awkwardly. MS is now funding/publishing this release on their console.

People need to stop expecting PlayStation announcements during Xbox conferences, that isn't what they are for. If a game isn't clearly announced as exclusive then it won't be.

Exactly. It's pretty silly to expect MS to comment on other platforms when Sony absolutely doesn't.

When did they show the Xbox One version?

She's dancing around he topic to avoid getting herself in trouble I'm sure. I don't see what the big deal is and sure, it'll probably go to PS4 eventually. She probably just shouldn't have engaged but this isn't nearly as offensive as people are acting, fucking hell.

Console launch exclusive.

I'm leaning towards early access exclusive. That could be a very long time I could see this not going retail on consoles until late summer 2018. The pc version will get priority and resources.

Really? I thought they showed it. So what version are they showing at gamescom? Will there be any footage of the Xbox version or what?

The fact there is so much confusing PR talk comming from both MS and the developer make it pretty obvious that it's a timed exclusives.

Seems smart. As far as I know they are a small team so continue to improve on the PC version and working on two different consoles at the same time might have been too much.
If you can only work on one console version at a time it makes sense to go with the one offering you money, support and taking over publishing costs.

Still, as allways this shit is annoying, just as it is with crash.
Nothing wrong with legit console exclusives but this whole "console launch debut only on X console later this year " is crap.

PC. They have PC tournament for BG at GamesCom.

I doubt we see any console footage before way, way closer to initial XBO release.

I don't understand, does that mean they aren't making any money on sales?

It means their small team is still working on actually finishing the game. The sales are great, but they are already hard at work making the game their customers have already purchased. They dont need the added demands of trying to release on 3 platforms simultaneously. Microsoft is offering their own resources to help make an x1 version happen. Obviously once those two are done they will work on the ps4 version.

It's a Xbox One exclusive.

PC version will get canceled soon

So, Xbox exclusive for late 2017, but open everyone else in 2018?

It's not confusing. It will be on the other platforms at a later date.

I agree. People make such a big deal out of this and I think it fools absolutely no one in the community.

If you want to play the game on console in 2017, you buy an Xbox. If you don't care or want to wait, just wait.

We get it, Microsoft and Sony suck when they do this. Repeat thread x 699.

The 1st one yeah. ARK is available on PS4 since last year, even though its official release date is August 29, 2017.

Pretty sure it's been all PC. E3 was PC, the clip they showed today was from PC etc etc.. I guess you just don't like the look of the game, it isn't the flashiest but the gameplay is the main selling point.

So theoretically, if there wasn't an exclusive marketing deal in place, couldn't they have also gotten help from Sony to help with the added resources of releasing a PS4 version?

And we should complain each time they do this.

It amazes me that the console version of PUBG is getting as much attention from you guys as it is because I see another Team Fortress 2 scenario.

I don't think Console only gamers know what to expect with this game. They will buy it and the flip out that it wasn't at all what they expected.

Instead of Microsoft? Sure. But we'd be in the exact same boat, just different consoles. Though of course, way more Gaffers would be happy.

I can see Bluehole making compromises for XBO version like adding powerful aim assist, reducing vertical recoil climb on weapons etc.
