Shenmue III – The 1st Teaser | PS4

I mean I have waited like 15 years for this scene to continue...
Mmhm. It's a nice update of that scene, even though some of the geometry appears to have changed. The lanterns have a cool magic "poof" before the ignite now too.

I'm sure I'll love just being able to experience Shenmue 3 almost regardless of what happens

But, I still wish they had just used high res Dreamcast assets to make the game

It would have been a lot cheaper and helped make a larger scale game more possible at a lower budget. Would likely have saved them a lot of time. Maybe could have even been done by now.
Ah the problem with that is that they kind of run out of Dreamcast assets at the end of Shenmue II. The locations in III are not really like anything seen in the previous games.

Even the major urbanised area like Choubu is still really different from Hong Kong or Yokosuka.

Like Sony would allow that. They're clearly pushing this. To what end, who knows.

They are doing the marketing. It's been known since forever. Marketing includes putting teasers on their YT channel.

Shibuya Productions = Publisher
YSNet = Developer
Deep Silver = Publisher
Sony = Marketing

It's pretty simple.

Well, actually:

So who knows?

You're twisting ShenmueGuru's point. He's implying that this is basically what a few backers saw last year and that YSnet have done a lot more work since then, and they're just not ready to show it off yet and the stuff we're seeing is super outdated, and that this teaser is not how it looks like in the current stage of development

(and that was a lot of "ands"!

Shenmue III should have kept the same graphical style of the first two games, the old SEGA arcade style graphics. Would've made this transition much smoother.

I like the environments and think the animations of the bodies are sufficient given it is a low budget title. But good lord, I can't stop laughing at those faces :')

I am a big Shenmue fan and that was disappointing for me. Character models are just off and why are they using an Vivid like color mode?

Yes, I've seen ShenmueGuru's post, but his point isn't what you're inferring it is. And I've spoken with him tonight over Skype to ask.

I'm not going to put words in his mouth but you're maybe looking at what he's said too literally.

I think the general point to take away from tonight is, surprise, a work in progress piece is still a work in progress.

I never believed a sequel to one of the most expensive games of all time could be made on a shoestring budget (in AAA context).

I still don't.

I'd place a bet on an 'Episode 1' releasing, and nothing else.

I wish I could make this my avatar.

ughhhhhh... I CAN'T LOOK AT, it's too jarring.

Meanwhile in Yakuza Land <3

But in all seriousness, I adored both Shenmue 1 and 2, one of the reasons why I got into Yakuza series is because of them, but holy shit, does this look clunky and unpolished as fuck. I know it's early on, but somehow I don't think it's gonna get much better overtime...

Like all previous games in the series this continues the tradition of being a terrible game. Other than complete suckers who looks at that trailer after two-ish years in dev and think this game is going to be good?

You might want to break Shenmue II out again if you've got a problem with colours.

Unless you meant you're literally a Shenmue fan, with it's greyer pallet.

I've always generally assumed the further Ryo gets into his mystical kung fu Chinese adventure, the more colourful things get. Literally.

I know you're joking but Yakuza games to tend to have like 4 to 5 times the budget of Shenmue 3 :p

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

I hate to say it, but I completely agree.

A "real," successful Shenmue III only happens with a Rockstar or Assassin's Creed sized budget.

We're gonna get a nostalgia-hitting, forum-poster satisfying Episode I that shows promise under all its (substantial) flaws, and then nothing again.

Or we see a full-sized Shenmue III that feels drastically smaller in scope than is predecessors. And I say that as a big fan and a Stan for the Dreamcast.

Why to show the game in that state???? I doesn't look good at all... First impressions are very important. I have a ME Andromeda de ja vu....

At the risk of getting into trouble, its worth it to see some of the shocking reactions ive read over the last 6 pages.

In the name of transparency, I can say that 90% of what was in that trailer we were shown a year ago at the Kickstarter dinner. There is a strategy to what's being shown. If you think this was put together last week that's your business, I am just telling you that the majority of that footage is at least a year old, some even 18 months old now.

Take from it what you will. Also, for those looking for Yakuza level character detail, maybe throw a few extra bucks onto the ongoing PayPal for the game, since this is a low funded title without a multi million dollar development studio behind it.
I'll take your word on this being old footage, and that word is reassuring.
But what on earth would that strategy be? Showing your game looking bad/unfinished doesn't seem like a smart one? People like us will get the context and ascribe some degree of leniency, but we're not the only ones able to watch this trailer.

why didn't people say all this in the bloodstained thread with all those "early" videos when half the level/details were missing? It's really no different here. It's an early look

One thing I just noticed, the length of Shenhua's pigtails change during the trailer. The first part of the trailer they're really short, shorter than they should be, and in the second half they're longer again, about the right length. Kinda odd. But the game's in development so nothing serious really. Shenhua especially needs work imo on her model, but I have very little doubt itll get better. The only other criticism I could have is that they're showing too many sunsets in the marketing of this game, it's making the general lighting feel overbearing imo. Also I don't like that the logo is different, what happened to the logo from 2 months ago?

Other than that the game looks good and I feel excited.

Yip.

Apples and oranges, and this orange aint' gonna be ready for another year to a year and a half.*

*I feel like a fucking broken record saying this, but it can't be stressed enough.

But... didn't Mass Effect Andromeda have a good first showing?

Ssssh, ssssh, sssh. No place for logic. Only knee-jerk reactions and hot takes.

I mean, I'm only half joking, for example Yakuza 3, a game that's over 8,5 years old looked like this in its first teaser:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYI7YeP5HQI

And contrary to the belief, Yakuza team operates on a pretty small budget compared to other games of its type.

Man, watching that teaser/trailer gets me hyped as fuck and makes me wanna replay the game.

Hopefully it's gonna get better, but I believe that your first teaser is supposed to get you hyped, knock your socks off, even lie a bit and make shit look better than it does - and this did nothing, if anything, it made me worried.

Extremely concerned they felt this was in good enough shape to release a trailer. Between this and Mighty #9 (which I finally just got my tangible backer shit from today), I think my backing days are over.

Comparing a kickstarter project to Yakuza is the dumbest shit I've seen today. My brain cells are rapidly depleting.

This is good enough.
I wasn't expecting fluid movement nor decent facial animation.
For a KS+some funding game, it is almost on the same level of Mass Effect's "quality".

That's exactly what I said, it's a dreamcast render.

The point is not how many polygons there are, the point is to show that the aesthetics of the face is far superior even with lower tech (a DC render is still just a DC render).

ah OK. But yeah, you're correct. Though, AM2 did put a lot of care into making the original models for the game, they even went so far as to sculpt real head busts for all main and secondary characters before modeling them with polygons. The models in this trailer are an improvement over what was shown during the Shenmue III pitch video, but they still look off.

& i'd almost say that just might go for ffvii remake, too :) ...

Maybe the pressure of the fan... I think this was not a great idea.. And it's a bad trend in the game industry.
You may have something there. There's definitely been pressure to show something for a while from fans. Notably some fucking looney tunes ones who live in the Kickstarter comments page. I'm not even going to bother checking the reaction there tonight.

But at the same time it was getting to the point where something had to come out, especially with a new publisher attached. I just wish they'd been a bit smarter with shot choices and editing, but there's enough in there to like so I'm not gonna put them on blast for WIP footage.

Love most of it, and am okay with the faces outside of Ryo... He really needs work. The guy looks unable to emote.
So... Ryo Hazuki then.

Naw I'm kidding. Mostly.

Strongly agree with these two posts. And I think no "strategy" can justify a trailer which they weren't even capable to place a decent font style to make the presentation look less ugly.

Environments, scenery and setting looks completely on point.

Character models and lack of facial capturing is probably a product that no voice-acting has been recorded to date. What is more disappointing is poorly edited trailer and old logo.

Maybe because it looks janky as fuck in the same way the original was, but I'm not even mad

Shenmue I & II had somewhat off looking secondary characters. Main characters like Ryo, Shenhua, Nozomi, Lan Di, Ren and Xiuying looked stupidly impressive for the time. Shenmue made everything that wasn't MGS2 look like hand puppets comparatively.
