Shenmue III – The 1st Teaser | PS4

Honestly at this point I wouldn't even care about DC graphics, I still barely believe this game is happening, so I won't get nitpicky, bring it on!

Same. I will play it no matter how bad and won't regret my kickstarter even if it never ships. Just glad to pay for hope.

Amazing what some nice editing can do.

Of course if the official teaser was like this one people would be complaining that its too short/not enough gameplay footage etc....which would probably be better than the situation they are in now.

I dunno, either way I think people would have complained so it's kind of lose-lose unless it's absolutely perfect which with WIP stuff like this, it's unlikely.

The faces could be straight out of 1 and 2 and I'd be OK with it. As long as they capture the feel of the original. Which will be damn hard to do.

My guesses that the Shenmue Team are the type who goes into silence when they work turned out to be right it seems.

Also I don't see what's wrong with the faces. People have strange standard these days.

IT LOOKS AMAZING! I'M CRYING OMG OMG OMG! I don't know if my expectations were low but it looks SO good! Shenmue is the best! My body was not prepared! ;_;

I think the issue is that it sort of looks like the faces were pasted on without any work on the animation really, which I think is what happened. Everything else seems rather polished but there is no work on the faces because they likely hadn't done anything yet but people are "concerned" due to that as well. I feel they'll address it if people are still asking about it later on.

They gotta work on the eyes. I kept seeing soulless dolls as I was watching this teaser. Otherwise, pretty cool.

After watching this a few more times I don't really see what's justifying such a negative reaction.

The faces need work for sure, but the environments and the animation aren't terrible by any stretch.

Are there actually any backers in here posting with a negative reaction? I'm assuming everyone calling it garbage and a disaster had no real interest in it anyway.

They're literally not animated in some places.

Not excusing them for using that footage when they maybe shouldn't have, but... work in progress. There are areas like the fight scenes and the environments that obviously show they're not half assing it, but clearly not everything shown was ready for the public.

That's good to know.

To be honest, I don't mind playing it like this. As long as it is consistently look good like this and not worse in some places. The lack of expression I can just chalk it to a byproduct of trying to imitate old games and obviously, kickstarter budget. But as someone who supported said Kickstarter, this looks okay.

As someone who put down $100 towards this, I'm...hopeful.

The faces do look terrible but on the other hand, they still have plenty of time. However, most everything they showed off so far hasn't looked stellar. Anyways, let's be optimistic for now. They have to fix the stupid faces though.

As soon as I saw those models, I lost it. The reactions will be something to behold, I think. I'm sorry ShenmueGAF, but it's true. I remember the gift that was ME: Andromeda... and I was a huge ME fan.

I backed and I'm fine with it. However, they should not have done it like this on the PlayStation YT channel. It's sort of opening it up to "this looks like shit" criticism despite being a work in progress.

As a fan, it looks incredible.

It's hilarious that people are expecting this to be some super huge groundbreaking game with such a limited budget. When you take the budget into consideration it's actually amazing what they've already achieved.

And yeah, Shenmue is going to draw in a lot of criticism because it's 'that' game that's been begged for for such a long time, so that's opened the door for a lot of people who think they have the right to judge it even though they probably have no interest in buying it and ultimately don't care about it.

ryo's face looks off and their faces all dont move looking like a student project.

and you add to that the weird keylight that seems to be hovering around the faces making them brightly lit = bizarre.

game looks like its gonna be a flop

Game looks unfinished because it is. Some of you are either jumping to irrational conclusions or just trolling.

Selling over a million copies (Shenmue 1) on a 10 million install base is pretty damn good. Then makes Shenmue 2 on dc for europe and japan when we know the dreamcast was failing. More like Sega's fault. Not to mention that ridiculous partnership with MS when you could have released Shenmue 2 on ps2 and give it a legitimate chance to succeed.
I think Sega was riding on this game for its savior but didn't break even because they broke into budget for 2 & the cancelled online game.

Im a backer and i really hate ryo and shenhua's character models and all the animation needs work. Im not soured on it or asking for a refund or amything but i am a little disappointed by how rough it still looks.

Looks good. Faces for some alpha footage are not anything to judge at this venture. If we were talking months away from release date then sure. But this game is still baking in the oven.

I guess my posts probably come across as negative. I don't actually think it looks terrible, but the faces are definitely going to be the first thing to catch basically anyone's attention. I can see them improving before release, as they contrast heavily against the body animations, which I'd expect to also be far lower quality otherwise. I still think that they should have gone with a Dreamcast-era look, as tbh this is basically a day I saw coming a looong way off. Here's a post I made in March 2014:

I don't think the number of people that would pledge, or the amount they would pledge would be of significant enough difference to make the jump to a more greenfield development worthwhile. Most of the people that really want to see the series completed (as in "multiple hundreds of dollars" want) are more concerned about the project simply existing, than it being cutting edge in any way. Time has actually built up a decent amount of nostalgia for how Shenmue looked, and redoing all the graphics actually has a good chance in harming people's sense of familiarity with it, if not done well.

I think just lifting assets from the DC version wholesale would not only sidestep a lot of the criticism the game draws by seemingly aspiring to modern standards whilst not having to budget to compete with something like Yakuza on that front, but it'd also likely help the budget spread further, so there would be more Shenmue 3 included at lower tiers than the goals we ended up with.

I'm a $250 tier backer, in case you're wondering. No regrets. Despite the criticisms I may have with some of the choices made, at the end of the day I'd rather have paid $500 and the game ship looking exactly as it does in that trailer, than have spent the next decade or two wishing that we had any signs of life for the IP.

Shenhua needs sorting though. Seriously, lol.

It looks incredible. The faces are clearly not ready for prime time but the team's in an awkward situation where they had to show something because fans have been clamouring for a trailer. Do you wait and create more doubt about the game, or do you put out some awesome footage with janky faces? I'm happy they showed it now because those environments and combat animations are exactly what I want...and the music :D

Looks like what would be reasonable to do with the budget and the team they have. Faces and animations are really poor but at least environments look great.

Looks alpha AF but I have faith.

My only "real" criticism is that looks more cartoony than I remember it? Specially that new character with long hair.

The scene in that gif with thar chinesse mater looks dope as hell though.

Bring it Yu!!!!

I think there may be a few backers, but that's just guessing based on statistical probability.

Even those not 100% pleased are seeing something they like though, most of the time. Weirdly enough some of the fans who have been really down on Shenmue III before have kinda come around with this video. I don't think if it was a genuine straight trainwreck that would be possible.

Like fuck, this was just over two years ago. It's a world of difference even if the latest build has a lot of work left to do.

But being a video game forum, and with a series as divisive as Shenmue, there's going to be some people who come to bray at what's shown with little logical thought about perhaps this game that will not come out until the 2nd half or 2018 is unfinished.

The only thing that's terrible are the emotionless doll models and some of the animations, and yes even Ryo looks weird. If they can fix that I don't think there's much for people to complain about visually.

Shenhua really does look awful and her new outfit makes her look like a French girl.

They should just retopologize the CG 3D model from the old Shenmue promo art for console optimization. Sega must have the assets somewhere.

Torn between wanting modern facial animation and acknowledging that a wooden blank expression is pretty much Ryo's defining character trait.

Yeah this is me. I wont be made if we still have 1999 facial animation or if they improve it lol. Jank is one of the things that I like about Shenmue, just like Tenchu.

Backgrounds look nice enough, but the character models look like they haven't improved since Dreamcast. I backed this game, but I'm really not expecting much from this to begin with; mostly just wanted to see this made, but maybe it didn't need to be...

Right now, all I hope is that this will be better than Mighty No. 9.

try throwing a punch in real life. do your arms look that stiff while doing it?

You must not watch much wuxia.

It is a bit odd they changed Shenhua's outfit though... is there some kinda lore reason? If enough backers want that changed though, I think they could work something in or have the old outfit in there as an option.

Yikes, aside from the expressions, the trailer was cut horribly. Environments look great though. As a backer who wants this to succeed, I wish they'd have put some facial expressions on the models so it wouldn't look this stiff. Again, environments look amazing and actually exceeded my expectation!
