Danish inventor now claims accident on board sub killed missing reporter (body found)

Didn't see it posted and I don't have a source to quote, but Danish police announced a few hours ago that the head and limbs were deliberately cut off the torso that was found. So it's not looking good.

I knew Kim. Lost touch with her a few years ago, but we worked together at one point.

This whole story is devastating and I feel so terrible for her family and boyfriend.

Maybe it was some kind of accident. But if it turns out that this inventor guy killed her and sunk the sub to hide the evidence, I hope he gets thrown in prison for the rest of his life.

Wow, that sucks. I hear you - someone I went to school with most of my life was murdered by a serial killer, and it's terrifying that such horror can come so close to you.

BBC: Kim Wall: Unidentified torso 'deliberately mutilated'
A headless and limbless corpse found in waters off Denmark was deliberately mutilated, say Copenhagen police.

But they say it is still too early to say whether it is the remains of Swedish journalist Kim Wall.

She was last seen alive on 10 August as she departed on a trip with submarine inventor Peter Madsen.

He initially said he had dropped her off safely near Copenhagen, but has since said she died in an accident and that he had "buried" her at sea.

The body has been sent for DNA analysis, but the results will not be available until Thursday morning.

Divers continue to search the waters near where the torso was discovered, but, despite some reported sightings, other remains have not been found.

"The current situation is that there is a torso in which arms, legs and head have been removed off as a result of deliberate cutting," said Jens Moller Jensen of the Copenhagen police.

"There is nothing about the length of the torso to indicate that it is not Kim Wall, but we do not yet know."

This piece of scum needs to rot in prison.
How did he think he was going to get away with something like this.
Absolutely horrible, my thoughts are with Kim's family and friends.

I want to know what his ”accident” was that warranted dismemberment...

Biggest bet is he tried to rape her by far, she resisted and probably killed her to shut her up or some shit maybe by accident but my bet is that initial reason..

Poor person getting this shit fucking deal however it happened..

Theoretically he could be so obsessed with his submarine than anything negative said about it could have triggered him into murderous rage.
Still whatever reason he deserves to spend rest of his live in prison.

Police just confirmed an attempt was made to weigh down the body with metal.

Also forensics have concluded that incisions were made to alliviate gas buildup as the body decomposed.

So uh... Fuck me. Somebody Googled get rid of body 101 in a hurry

A mad rush, he tried to do something to her that's for sure.

Hope they prove it.. :/

Thank you. When I found out what happened I kept looking at our last Facebook interactions and remembering the last time I saw her, which was in 2014. It's really, really hard to believe that this happened to her, and the fact that her death is an international news (and probably murder) story is even worse.

The recent articles about her torso being found make me feel sick. I don't know much about this Madsen guy but everything I read makes me cringe and feel like this whole thing sounds like something out of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Hopefully they can prove she was murdered.

Him sticking to it being an accident obviously have him hoping murder can't be proven. Even if they can prove he chopped up the body and such. Could turn out to be another case like "The Linda Chen case" here in Sweden. Where they could only prove the "murderer" violated the corpse, but not how Linda died and therefore not if she was murdered or not.

It's just insane to me that he did all this on his submarine, but I guess if it was a DIY submarine it's not unlikely that he had some tools on board, perhaps even power tools.

The brutal nature of this is just disturbing. I feel so bad for her family.

Why didnt someone go with her? Alone with him in a submarine is scary.

Well... She was a freelance journalist writing a feature about the guy. She probably didn't see him as a risk, or at least less of a risk than some of the previous places she's reported from:
http://nationalpost.com/news/world/...home/wcm/5a2ae336-b731-4b96-bbfe-83da065ff684

Kim Wall has reported from the depths of postwar Sri Lanka and from the capital of North Korea. While covering climate change in the Marshall Islands, she was quarantined and tested for exposure to radiation.

The 30-year-old freelance journalist, based in New York and China, is known among her friends as an intrepid reporter, skilled at exploring hard-hitting topics in obscure, and at times dangerous, locations.

To survive through all that, but get taken out by some loon in a DIY submarine...

Police identify headless torso as that of Kim Wall, journalist believed killed on submarine

Danish police said Wednesday that a headless torso found in waters off of Copenhagen is that of missing Swedish journalist Kim Wall, the Associated Press reported.

How incredibly disturbing. POS needs to give the family some closure and just admit to it (in an ideal world, obviously).

I mean, he already did. She had an accident in the process of which she happened to lose her head, arms, legs, attach herself to metal weighs, falling in the ocean.

Did he really expect one would ever find her body? Did he just watch too much Dexter? o_O

I don't think we're ever going to know what went on in that sub. If he keeps to this story then I can't see how they can charge him with murder, all they can get him on is manslaughter. So as frustrating as it will be, I wouldn't expect this guy to ever come clean.

wait does this guy have a record or he just seemingly went full blown wacko ?

(while all things strongly point to his guilt I'll hold judgement till trial etc)

I guess if he has no record of violence etc then guess she went along trusting him .... this story is getting pretty grisly ....

Of course they can charge him with murder. They don't need a photo of him killing her to charge.

A charge is just that: a charge, not a conviction. That's what a trial is for. The jury will hear all this evidence and the forensic experts, and will decide guilty or not guilty. The CPS may go for manslaughter only if they look at the evidence they have and decide a conviction on murder will be really hard (it won't be. People have been convicted of murder without a body even being found before).

Depends on local laws. Nothing in his ever changing story is backed up by evidence.

It would only take some notes or some computer history search log to suggest pre-meditation. He scuttled his own sub to hide evidence, that sounds expensive. Dismemberment is also a very extreme measure for the average person. I don't know about you, but I can't imagine doing something like this just to cover an accident.

More details coming in and they're getting quite grisly, what on earth happened for this poor woman to be dismembered like that.

I cant imagine how her family are coping with the details. Her poor parents :(

Surprised this isn't in here. I'm pretty sure I read on reddit yesterday the body was confirmed to be her though DNA evidence.

Edit: oops. Guess I thought I was on the last page when I wasn't.

I should have used "increasingly grim" rather than "increasingly weird" in my original title.

I'm honestly not sure how the judiciary works in Denmark, and based on your usage of "CPS" and "the jury" (the Danish courts use a mix of jury, lay judges, and judges iirc) neither do you.

However I do agree with you that they might charge Madsen with murder.

As you noticed, it was in the thread but not the op. I'll update it to reduce any possible confusion.

It might be.

Yes, people have been convicted without a body.

But if they are unable to determine how she died, it would be hard to convict him for the murder.

As I commented above, look at the case of the Linda Chen murder in Sweden. The police consider the case to be "resolved/solved" but they couldn't convict the killer in court because with the state the corpse was in you couldn't completely rule out her dying from an accident.

I would bet danish courts are similar to Swedish when it comes to burden of evidence and such.

The danish submarine-guy is obviously sitting hoping they won't find the head of the victim.

This is such a weird story and would absolutely make an amazing true crime show.

But god damn the inventor is a disturbed individual. Just read on a Finnish news site that he had (or had tried) punctured the poor womans lungs to make the body stay under better. :/

Terrible story

That inventor guy sounds pretty creepy

In 2015, after a dispute with the group of volunteers maintaining it, ownership of the Nautilus was transferred to Mr Madsen, says a statement on the website (in Danish).

"You may think that a curse is lying on Nautilus. That curse is me," he had messaged members of the board, according to the statement. "There will not be peace on Nautilus for as long as I exist."

Well police are comparing this case to other similar, and there is at least one mentioned on the BBC link. This story just gets weirder by the day

Mr Madsen used to blog on the Danish engineering news site "Ingeniøren" (The Engineer). I sometimes skimmed his insanely elaborate stream-of-conscious posts about rocket and submarine projects. He always seemed like he had one million thoughts going on at a time. Almost like if he was in a state of mania or something.

What the hell. So, did he just straight up serial kill her or did something happen and then he was trying to hide the body. Just fucking bizarre.

Kim was a friend of a friend so this whole story is disturbing as fuck. Why the hell would he go through all of these expensive and gruesome attempts to cover up her death if it was an honest accident?
