"The world's most powerful console"

The latest in a long line of slogans/PR statements constantly being repeated. You can't think about the Xbox One X/Scorpio without thinking about some Microsoft rep looking deep into the camera and saying 'The world's most powerful console'. I have to admit though, that despite seeing right through this transparent PR strategy, it still makes me 'hyped' when I hear it.

There have been a few other slogans during the Xbox One's life span. "Beta tested in the future", "All-in-One Games & Entertainment System". PS4 has "Greatness Awaits" or "For the Players" (#4theplayers). I remember the Wii having something along the lines of "Wii Would Like to Play" or something weird like that. My favorite though was the original NES with "Now you're playing with power!".

What is/was your favorite marketing tagline? Least favorite? Have they ever 'worked' on you?

They absolutely do not work on me at all, I feel like they are rallying calls to the already fanatical.

Not to say I'm immune to marketing by any stretch. Its just slogans like that do nothing for me.

Sony also had 'the World's most powerful console' on all their ad's for a while. it works for people who don't follow games. It also shows how gaming advertisement is no longer as witty and smart as it used to be.

I always loved

To be this good takes AGES

Sega does what Nintendon't was awesome.

Best by far is Blast Processing, I didn't care what it did when I was younger, it just sounded cool and that was all I needed.

I straight up hate #4theplayers though. It's nothing but cheery lies when you actually think about what Sony's customer service is like.

"The world is in play" was nice I thought. (Vita.) Oh, then there's "Live in your world. Play in ours." from their pre-7th gen days. To the point and very catchy, really dig it.

This one is one of the dumbest ones as it'll be untrue before long.

I still like the old PlayStation over, "live in your world, play in ours"

U R Not E

This was a TV and magazine advertisement from Sony that spelled out "U R NOT E ," and the E would be red.

I remember being 10 or 11 and this ad not making any sense to me in print, and then when I got it, I was like "ohhh..."

I don't remember the jazzy music.

Glad they say console but that's mostly meaningless.
If they said worlds most powerful system then I can see PC gamers saying otherwise

Really, OP? That's getting you hyped? Every single generation has a World's Most Powerful Console in it, sometimes two or more in a row! Except those are actual generation jumps, and this is a quarter-step at best. It's just... really irritating to me, honestly, that as a slogan. Not only since it's being peddled as somehow an amazing new thing when it's probably the most mind-numbingly expected characteristic of a (non-nintendo) new console, but since it puts this absurd emphasis on POWER!!!! as something that should make you buy a box that brings basically nothing else to the table.

BlehhhhhhHHHHHH

Why does he wear the mask!?
Marketing PR never works on me, worlds most powerful console means very little if you're a PC gamer anyway

#4theplayers used to resonate with me, but it feels like a lot of the public persona that PlayStation built up at the beginning of the generation has faded, and they've kinda gone back to being a bit stiff and business-like since. I don't actually feel like I favor Sony as a company quite as much as I used to at the beginning in 2013, where it felt like they were sort of light on their feet and super "business-casual."

I get that feeling specifically from Phil Spencer at Xbox now, but the rest of his team and their presentations don't necessarily get that vibe across. For instance, I don't think any particular Xbox conference stands out, but his persona in interviews and in more candid surroundings comes off as extremely positive. I can't really put much of a slogan to Phil Spencer, though I do positively refer to him as the "Xboss." I guess "the world's most powerful console" does work for me, though, since I am quite interested in the Xbox One X and hope it gets really great third party, multiplatform support (basically a repeat of the Xbox 360). Outside of Forza, I have no lasting high passion for any of Xbox's exclusive IPs, but I'd be okay with the Xbox One X being the best place to play third-party, multiplatform games again.

Like what the fuck is that? Are you advertising an actual play with a set and stage and actors and such?

90s advertising was weird. "Buy our shit, or are you too much of a fucking loser?" was the approach used by so many games back in the day.

I actually really liked the entire Wii Would Like to Play campaign, from the tagline itself to the ads' visual identity and focus on the players instead of the IP.

And I'm loving the echoes of that we're seeing in the Switch and Play campaign, even though the tagline isn't nearly as catchy.

I was always really disappointed that the wide range of controller options + Off-TV Play on Wii U didn't lead to the slogan "Play the Way U Want."

"Greatness Awaits" was a nice running joke for me about how most of PS4's biggest announcements are always years off.

I think the idea was that the word "play" can be interchangeable with lots of other words, like "adventure" or "party" or whatever. It was weird that they never took that anywhere though.

Eh it's not that bad

It's clearly a play on "there's no place like it" and it's emphasizing Nintendo's uniqueness, which has always been their strong suit

"U R Not (red-colored 'E')." It didn't have any purchasing effect on me (I already had a PS1), but I thought it was particularly fun/silly.

EDIT: Beaten!

Sega Dreamcast: Its Thinking.

I remember literally nothing else about those commercials, but that line stuck with me

I love Nintendo, but that slogan just doesn't make sense in my mind. It isn't even a pun. It's just words.

Like naughty? How does this relate to gaming?

Edit:
Oh snap. Red e. Ready. Hahaha. Did NOT see that one coming. That's pretty effing obscure.

Amiga CD32

To be this good would take SEGA AGES

And they went and stuck it in the billboard outside SEGA HQ in London at the time.
