COMICS!!! |OT| August 2017 | Gwenpool's milkshake brings all the boys to the yard

As other have said, that a Young Avengers back. If you look it says collects Young Avengers 1-6.

America is a book where the creator has no concept of the personality of the character. The writing is terrible and completely cringe worthy. The concept itself is nonsensical. America Chavez is one of the coolest most interesting characters Marvel has and she deserved a much better book than this. The reason America gets vitriol over other books is the same reason you're harder on the A+ student for failing than you are on the C- student. America could and should have been one of Marvel's best books, up there with Ms. Marvel and Gwenpool. Instead it's lower than Generation X and Royals. That's not how it was supposed to go.

Same thing will happen if Runaways is a pile of shit: I'm coming at it with knives out.

It's also why I more or less hate Champions: cool concept, terrible execution.

America had me hyped and then the first issue came...

Random break up with her GF
School because reasons
Time travel because reasons

I wanted to read America figuring out her place in the world, I got SHE'Z SO AWESOME GUYS. LET'S ROOT FOR HER! without SHOWING why I should care.

Iceman kinda falls on this boat but Grace is SHOWING me why I should care about Iceman.

Runaways is at my last rope with bring Book Authors in comics, if Rowell can't pull it off, CAN THIS PROGRAM.

Mighty Carol is just meh
Black Panther I tapped out on
America we already addressed.

Yes, Brisson and Cates coming in helps but fuck me, pushing talent over just to get a big book writer who doesn't get comic pacing just fucks over the books in the long run.

Meanwhile, Axel is like
"It ain't a #1 if you relaunch it with a big number." for Legacy. It's a new #1, the numbers just got fucked with and the cover shit is disgusting. In order to have this cool cover, you have to buy 2 boxes of Monsters Unleashed that will likely sit at the shops 5 months after the 1st trade come out.

Mockingbird though. Also, I really loved the covers and the art on America, which didn't help.

OH! And Kelly Thompson is doing great.

Marie Lu should get a comic, cause holy shit if The Young Elites hasn't been the best thing I've read this year.

----

DC Icons is a damn good look. Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Sarah J Maas, Matt de la Pena? PLZ.

I just picked up Batwoman: Elegy from the library yesterday and I really like this. I like Kate's look outside of the costume. That's really hot and the art is just gorgeous, but weird. Whenever she's in costume the art has this almost painted look to it, but then you get something strange whenever Alice is on screen and it looks weird when the two of them are together. I also like how Batman told her that having her hair out is dangerous in their line of work.

I am also surprised that she has two parents and her father knows and helps her in her costume work.

I forgot about Mockingbird...fuck it's been a year since it ended too soon.

Also, Kelly was a author? I know GWW was one but she did comic work before that.

The America reactions in this thread are so fucking gross.

I think it's a fine comic that's way more ambitious than most comics but primarily is so not targeted at mainstream fans (whether that's a good idea or not is another story).

I don't think any comic should be above criticism, obviously, but the open hostility to this particular book is kind of head scratching. There are much worse books that get much fewer slaps, so what exactly is it about America?

As others have points out, the point was the Young Avengers book is accidentally taking shots at Marvel "Legacy".

To answer your question, it's because we like Miss America and it's not a very good book. I, for one, dislike books that misuse characters I enjoy. It's not even the only book that I feel misses the mark. Perhaps one could explain why dislike is gross?

Superman #17 was great! Loved Fiumara's work. What else has he done?
That was the last issue of the (surprisingly short) trade. Every issue seemed to have a different artist.

Also started on the Bitch Planet trade. #1 was a nice set-up. Liked the small twist with the Mrs. Collins name.
The Fiumara brothers did the art for the Abe Sapien ongoing. I just started it last night and they do a good job there. Worth reading if you like BPRD.

Oh, that's cool. I can see him being a great fit there. (Haven't seen his brother's work, only Sebastian was on Superman #17.).

I am way behind on my Hellboy reading order (only recently finished LE 4). Will start on BPRD after my next round of library books are done.

? This isn't, like, a new experiment. Genevieve Valentine, Marjorie Liu, the aforementioned Chelsea Cain. DC picked up some novelists in their talent showcases as well.

plus it's not like pacing is a problem exclusive to book writers

Rucka also started off as a novelist.

Max is really good too, think you'll like his work too.

I thought you were farther along but at least you get all of that sweet Guy Davis art in BPRD. Shame he doesn't do comics anymore.

The not so new:

Kelly wrote one of my all time favorite books, The Girl Who Would Be King. I will read any and everything she writes till one of us is dead.

Is it possible to hate half of a comic and love the other half?

Jem and the Holograms: Dimensions #1—Cover A:Tana Ford—SPOTLIGHT

Kate Leth, Sophie Campbell (w) • Tana Ford, Sophie Campbell (a) • Tana Ford (c)
Jem: Dimensions brings both new and beloved creators to the world of The Holograms! In a story by Kate Leth and Tana Ford, the Holograms throw a Dungeons and Dragons game night with Jerrica as the Dungeon Master, and even Synergy joins the fun! And in Sophie Campbell's story, the Misfits (plus some NEW faces) take a break to go on a ski trip, when all hell breaks loose...and so does Pizzazz's cat!

Sophie is back on Jem!

I want to read more Jem. I placed on hold like 4 volumes at the library, but only the 1st one came in. Went yesterday and asked where the hell are the others it's been weeks? One is too new and 2 and 3 are at some other library that's under construction. Err, I just wish I had money so I could buy them.

Ugh, with the Tim Drake arc coming up in Detective Comics, I am not sure if I will be able to wait for the trade next year for it ha ha. Didn't really go through with my start checking out issues for that series thoughts.

I should be getting my Thanos from that line in Friday. I'll see how that looks for quality when I decide whether or not to grab dat Moon Knight. Their Gwenpool was pretty good, so I'm not worried.

Thanos doesn't look bad for a classic look picking.

Archie: why does anyone tolerate this buffoon? Trying hard only gets you so much. Actually, I want a Archie/Giant Days crossover: Archie accident magnetism plus Esther's drama field would be pure chaos. It boggles the mind how Archie can be so good while Champions is so bad and from the same writer.

Disney Princess: These were so good and now they're so bad. I'm distressed how the quality has fallen off. I wonder why Mebberson left, but damn do I miss her. The art is getting worst too. I think the only legit laugh was Rapunzel making terrible jokes because her name is Rapunzel.

Hi-Fi Fight Club: OMG PLEASE LAST MORE THAN FOUR FUCKING ISSUES BECAUSE I LOVE THIS.

Josie and the Pussycats: secretly the best Archie comics book. Holy hell I almost died laughing from this. One of the most fun comics out there.

Lumberjanes: it's crazy that nothing has come of this comic yet. No movie, no show, no game. I think a life is strange type adventure game would be good, maybe with a custom created character. I'm glad this comic has been around as long as it has and I love that they tossed in timey wimey stuff to allow any number of extensions, but like Gotham Academy and Gravity Falls, this feels like a story that is heading for an end point.

A movie deal has been made, they just take time.

I don't have time to wait. Fucko is in the White House trying to kickstart the apocalypse.

----

I don't need nor do I want a Joker and Harley movie?

Why does Harley have as many film roles upcoming as Diana? Actually more? SS2, GCS, J+H vs JL and WW2.

What Batwoman are you reading?

I finished Batwoman: Elegy. Pretty good shit. So
Alice in truth was her twin sister? Is she really dead. The ending just left me feeling there is more. Also pretty fucked up how she was kicked out of the Marines. Do they really have an anti-gay policy? It wouldn't surprise me, but still.
The structure of some of the panels was confusing to me and I didn't care for the were-people, but other than that it was great.

Hi-Fi is a mini series

I can't process this Harley news. If Sirens died for this I am so upset. If not. The more the better.

So was Goldie Vance. Boom Box will frequently test run a series for four issues before offering the opportunity to be ongoing instead.

Sure, was just informing you of where it's currently at.

Also I believe pussycats is dead or superstar Marguerite Bennett is gone.

That's what in development means lol

Yeah, but they have like 17 movies announced in just the DCEU and now they are planning on doing Elseworlds stuff lol. Of course a number of them likely won't actually come out, but it's crazy that they announced that many movies.

None were announced except for the CC slate and a few others. The rest were leaked.

It felt like it could be an ending. No next issue cover. Team Marguerites is on Bombshell duty after all.
