Easy Allies |OT3| "That sounds like the GameTrailers guy!"

This week's podcast was pretty lame imo.

I want to try and get into Easy Allies content again, what's the best way to catch their stuff? Twitch? YouTube? Their site?

I tried giving them a shot last year when they launched, but the audio quality on the podcast just seem too low for me, everyone like they were at different qualities. Is it any better? It looks like they just have a ton of content. Any standouts for someone coming back into it for basically the first time?

They've definitely gotten new mics since then and the sound quality is good. For me I prefer to keep track of all their stuff on YouTube on both their regular channel and their Easy Allies Plays channel, though they also have most of their long form shows on iTunes as well if you just want to listen

Check out fellow Gaffer Farisr's Best Of series here for some highlights from throughout this year:

He's still a month or so behind (perfectly understandably, the E3 coverage alone would've been a mountain of a task) but there's a lot of great stuff in them.

Edit: Kyle should be ashamed of his words and deeds for liking Jurassic World. That movie was absolute trash.

Well their site is good, you get to see all their different shows categorized and can check the schedule at the same time (it converts to your own timezone too). Frame Trap is definitely one of my favorites, it's a long podcast. If you are into Nintendo, Friend Code would be the podcast for you. Don's Discount Gaming is also very special, shouldn't miss that. From their streams I can recommend group streams, while not all of those are necessarily great. I tend to like their tournaments most, like the For Honor one. Also I especially enjoy Hall of Greats that has been talked in these last few pages. They don't play anything in those, but some interesting and fun discussions and pitches about great games.

Really good question in this week podcast Taxman.
Stagnation controller design is real problem, we really need someone to break the mold again, hopefully VR side can spawn a new standard.

The Hall Of The Greats discussions are great when people criticise and nitpick the very games they like themselves, like they're channelling Armond White as their Stand. I do agree that repeats can be a little tiring though.

As others have said, there's a Best Of series that regularly gets linked in these threads. Other than that, the podcast's a good way to get into the groove too.

Console makers should look into what Valve did with their Steam controller. It would open up certain games and genres to be better played on consoles than they are with the standard controller.

Its pretty interesting the divide between Japanese output and Western output in the 80's and 90's. It seems the West mainly dominated the PC world and most games on consoles were Japanese.

Damiani, Friend Code about the best Western developed Nintendo/console games during the 90's?

I been thinking about it. wondering about it. searching. wikipedia'ing....

i defy anyone to find a "top 100 of all time game" western developed game for the NES/SNES/Genesis

like 90 of the best 100 games ever are Japanese games that came out in the '90s. so what

it's just a fact. no need to get defensive about it.
i'm a huge fan of japanese games as well but that's just not true. there were lots and lots of extremely good games after the 90s and from western developers. it's just representitive of EZA that the games they played in their childhood get voted in first. they are very console centric after all.

i can guarantee you now that Donkey Kong Country would make most lists.
Super Turrican is an easy pick
Earthworm Jim would probably not make it.

I'm on to the GT REmake stream now. Man, that game sure is pretty. I really do hope the remake for 2 is done in the same style. I also hope they do something like what Huber mentioned in his Easy Livin' stream of RE2 and include RE3 in it since it's all taking place at the same time.

Rare.
DKC2 is a top 100 game no doubt

Well including even one in top 10 for NES would be impossible. But some of these would definitely fit in top 100 NES games: Maniac Mansion, Lemmings, R.C. Pro-Am II, Micro Machines, Super Turrican, Elite, North & South, Battletoads, Prince of Persia, Wizards & Warriors 1 & 2, Skate or Die, Smash TV, Pool of Radiance. For SNES it's much easier to think of games, like games from Lucas Arts, Blizzard and Rare. I never had Genesis so can't comment on that.
This is what I'd nominate for western games (80-90s):
Ah, if outside consoles I could name much more. To add into your list of great western games in the 90's (not from the EZA POV but personal). Grim Fandango, Fallout 2, System Shock 2, Broken Sword, Civilization 2, Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis, Master of Orion 2, Sim City 2000, Day of the Tentacle, Tie Fighter or X-Wing vs Tie Fighter for the multiplayer, Quake 2, Gabriel Knight, UFO: Enemy Unknown (XCOM), C&C: Red Alert, Thief, Syndicate etc.

Doom
Baldur's Gate II
StarCraft
Donkey Kong Country 2
Planescape Torment (maybe)
Tetris
Half-Life
The Curse of Monkey Island
Diablo II
Unreal Tournament (maybe)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Banjo-Kazooie

and...? What other non-japanese games from the 80s-90s deserve to enter the Hall of Greats? Of course it's very subjective but 12 games are what came to my mind, while there are literally dozens of deserving japanese ones: that was the peak period of the eastern video game production.

Feels pretty obvious to me why the current Hall of Greats is what it is: they're getting out of the way what they have the fondest memories of, because they were young, and that happens to coincide with the most prolific period for the japanese industry.

I think it's also fair that the oldest games are being inducted first, as they have stood the test of time for much longer than the 2000-2010 western blockbusters, and they can be certain of their classic status and evergreen worth.

EDIT: I went by memory and after checking, Tony Hawk, BG II and and Diablo II aren't even 90s, all launched in the year 2000.

maybe Maniac Mansion, Lemmings, and Prince of Persia. but not the console versions.

Podcast was great, especially the Locks, Sleepers, Busts, and Keepers (though they won't be able to judge the Keepers for years to come and no one will remember the picks in the first place)

I'm a $1 patron so im curious, I hope Kyle mentioned the correction for spuriously dragging Brad and Damiani's platypus noise last week in favor of Ben and Ian (categorically false) when two weeks ago he said Brad and Damiani were the best...

You'll just have to wait until Friday to find out!
He totally does. He even tells Ben and Ian theirs is the worst. Then they prove him right after the bets segment in the episode.

My personal Hall of Greats (choosing only 6 since that's what EZA is at)

Metroid Prime
Mega Man X
Mega Man Legends 2
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Super Smash Bros Melee
Demons' Souls

None of them in EZA's selection... might be tough since I think they're going to be biased against a franchise getting multiple entries in, and DaS or BB will probably get in rather than DeS. Smash or Mega Man X might be the best chances.

Mine would be (keeping it one per series):

Ocarina of Time
Final Fantasy VII
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Metal Gear Solid
Super Mario World
StarCraft: Brood War

During the Gundam stream after the first Hall of Greats induction, I asked if they thought MGS getting in would hurt MGS3s chances if it was nominated. Ben and Brad said no, Kyle said yes
and I think Kyle is right.

Imagine the salt if they put in a 2nd Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc. before putting in a western developed game.

EDIT: My HoG

Metal Gear Solid 3
The Last of Us
Persona 4 Golden
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Chrono Trigger
The World Ends With You

What salt? Nobody between those 9 seems to care where the game is from.

Metroid Prime

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Mine, not in any particular order
Mario 64
Zelda: a Link to the past
Witcher 3
Deus Ex
Civilization V (expansions included, if not then Civ 2)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Had to make some hard cuts =/

Probably those salty Xbox fanboys Cliffy B is also talking about.

I meant salt from the people online complaining about no western games, it was a mostly separate idea from the part about one game in a series hurting another's chances with the group. (I initially said "Imagine the salt in this thread" but didn't want anyone to think they were being called out).

Who cares if people are salty? If the two best games of all time happen to be in the same series, then so be it. Both of those games would deserve credit.

The Rare games I think can be put in a different category, since they're published by Nintendo.

I'd say Doom, Starcraft, and Tetris are locks. But I don't know how attached the Allies are to the others. And as you rightly point out, that era was when Japanese games were firing on all cylinders and Western games were mostly still coming into their own. Their golden era would be later. I think it's justified that Japan's represented so heavily at this point.

That's like saying ND games are in a different category, because they are published by Sony

My current six in the Hall of Greats:

- Persona 4 Golden
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Goldeneye N64
- The Last of Us
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Pokémon Gold/Silver

And yes, I am on the younger side which would explain the lack of obvious classics in my Hall lol.

Besides the fact that SIE is predominantly Western now, they have nowhere near the creative influence Nintendo did with the Rare games, the Rare games ape genres pioneered by Japanese devs, and those games of that era are beloved by people who otherwise only love Japanese games, sure. Those situations are exactly the same. >_>

I think it's pretty clear those games are clearly edge cases that blur the lines between the two regions. It's like saying Metroid Prime is a Western game. Sure, technically. But not really.

With all that being said, if you want to wave the banner that Banjo and Donkey Kong were all-time great Western games, more power to you. I just classify them a bit differently.

Yeah, and in the end it's important to remember that it's just a subjective list of what the Easy Allies think are the best games that's basically no more 'correct' than yours or mine.

For me personally a top 100 games of all time would be mostly PC games.and maybe 1 JPRG tops for example.

Yeah i was shocked when he said that. This is clearly a passion project for Shu Yoshida. Also this is kind of what Bluepoint does, they take older games and make them look better, why not SOTC?

This is where I say I enjoyed the muddiness and poor framerate of SotC and GAF tells me I'm objectively wrong for enjoying it :p

Did any Allies start from DeS or did they jump in at DaS (or even later) and then play DeS later? I think if you started with DeS then that's absolutely the game that should go in because while it may not be as good as the others, that's the game that started everything and it came out at a time where every game was moving in the opposite direction. But if you started later than that, it's a lot easier to ignore how much of a game changer DeS was.

My six would probably be:
Deus Ex
ICO
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Suikoden II

Runners up (in no order): Phantasy Star IV, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Metroid Prime, The Last Guardian, Rome Total War and The Last of Us.

I'll follow that up with my lock, sleeper, bust and keeper picks:
Lock: Yakuza 6
Sleeper: Days Gone
Bust: Sea of Thieves
Keeper: Horizon

Days Gone is a game I wasn't impressed with at first but after the two different E3 demos this year, I have some hope for it. Mainly, I'm hoping Bend has a hit on their hands because they've been stuck on handheld games for so long.

For Sea of Thieves, I just don't see it having the content you'd expect from a GaaS game, nor do I see it attracting much of a fanbase on Xbox and the W10 Store.

And Yakuza 6 and Horizon are self explanatory.

Bloodborne
Hotline Miami
Mass Effect 2
Pokémon Blue
Yakuza 0
Katamari Damacy

Also, GiantBomb uploaded a Monster Hinter World Unfinished. Might that be the event Ben went to? I don't know whether we know what it was, already.

Lock: Yakuza 6
Sleeper: The Crew 2
Bust: Biomutant
Keeper: HITMAN

It's in the same genre as Spyro. I don't really see how Banjo would disqualify, the game is a full on Rare game, it's only relation is that it was published by Nintendo. Donkey Kong is another matter, and you can clearly see how DK64 is also very much a Rare game, and not a Nintendo one.
