Easy Allies |OT3| "That sounds like the GameTrailers guy!"

Lock - Red Dead. cmon
Sleeper - Darksiders III. I think a ton of people picked up one or both of the first two games over the past couple of years, and there's going to be a massive amount of hype (for a really short time). and it'll review well. 80ish meta.
Keeper - Super Mario Odyssey. there will be a Mario Odyssey 2
Bust - Sonic Forces. people got their fill with Mania. for $20. they're not dropping another 60 for another Sonic game two months later

I do partially agree with Kyle about Shadow of the Colossus.

Not Ian, it's not a cash-grab. I think it's a passion project but I don't know if that'll be enough. Especially made me think when Kyle said "What's the motive of this being made?"

Shadow of the Colossus has held up incredibly well because of its art design and atmosphere. The atmosphere that game gives off as a PS2 game is incredible and nothing like it has been achieved since. I think you can make a remaster/remake that will be faithful to the original but it will be a huge task to make it an improvement over the original.

New episode of Fiasconauts was pretty good. It had some great moments though the direction the story went in was.... odd. Jones character Randy was easily the best part of the whole thing.

Haha, that's awesome.

On a completely different subject, I don't want to go into the OT yet because I haven't quite finished it but I'm legit amazed at how great Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is. Uncharted 4 only came out 15 months ago FFS and yet Naughty Dog managed to turn around and produce a game of this quality in that short time. It's insane.

Seriously. I'm at
Chapter 5
& loving it. New leads (as in, not Druckmann/Straley) this time I think, which is even crazier. ND are so talented.

The Lost Legacy is what Uncharted 4 should have been but wasn't. I enjoyed it so much that I scored it an 9.5/10 personally and for the first time since I finished Uncharted 2, I want more Uncharted: The Lost Legacy games with Chloe as the lead. It's that good.

Yup, Kurt Margenau and Shaun Escayg.

Enjoy the ride, you've still got a ways to go. I just finished it and it's incredible. Easily one of my favourite games of an insane year.

Really enjoyed Damiani's Bloodborne talk on FT; didn't know he played these games, although it makes sense. I could literally listen to hours of this kind of BB discussion, especially from these guys. Good chat.

naughty dog hires the best and works so hard. some of them only go to work and sleep and that's it. it's a fucking insane lifestyle
It's a bad lifestyle if you ask me. If you hire the best of the best and then make them work in a condition that halves their creative input and lower their skillset because of the stress of the crunch, you've completely botched your development plan.
I hope to look back at this industry in a couple of years and see this this kind of behavior completely gone forever.

yup. i look at naughty dog and immediately think 'botched creative output'.

I don't like Uncharteds shooting or puzzles, but always have more of a soft spot for open world over linear... And the main characters seem much better than Nathan Drake.

Gah, I'll try it at some point. I have Yakuza, Everybody's Golf and Mario + Rabbids coming today, so I'm good for now....

I love open world games, but i have to say the Madagascar "open" area in U4 was incredibly boring, it felt meaningless and in a game with an already slow as shit pacing, it wasn't really needed to stretch things out.
I hope LL handles that aspect better.

Help I am overwhelmed.
Oh fuck lol
I wanna play Rabbids, Kiwami, Golf, Life is Strange, but man, that is a lot of money. Kiwami is pre-ordered. Probably gonna choose Rabbids, though. Golf may have to wait.

On that note, PS Now finally came to Germany officially and I activated the trial phase. There are some titles on there I am interested in, but overall super underwhelming catalogue. Tried Aliennation and Everybody's Golf World Tour. Didn't have any technically or latency issues (that I noticed), so on that front Now delivers. Still, 17 Euro for a bunch of "would never but might as well play"-games doesn't do it.

World Tour is fun, but I can wait on the PS4 game, I think.

Also: The Allies never managed to get together for PUBG, but they are hyping up playing Sea of Thieves together constantly, I hope they pull through on this!

Naughty dogs is a studio with a great output, but the crunch stories we heard about them are not nice and shouldn't be justified by fans of games.

Crunch is bad, period. Your snarkiness is not a good argument.

Me too, especially because we usually hear a different set of allies talking about souls, so it was fun to hear Damiani and Kyle this time. I died when Kyle called him a "pattycake baby" for summoning help for bosses, because I'm one of them too. I always prefer to do bosses coop if I can. It's so much more fun too, aside from easier, because there's that rush of celebration and the other person is right there to celebrate with you. I helped my friend defeat Orphan of Kos and I think that's my favorite souls memory I have. We still talk about it.

We hear those stories about pretty much every studio, so singling out Naughty Dog is pretty silly, especially if you're a fan of Japanese games.

Does Kyle's shirt in the latest Fiasconauts say "I Love Copters"

Because that's a pretty incredible shirt if so

Great Fiasco so far

you said crunch halves creative input and lowers their skill set. citation needed please. you also said they botched their developmental plan. meanwhile they are consistently putting out incredibly acclaimed games (source: metacritic).

i'd argue that the creative process is hard to plan out accurately. some level of crunch is necessary if you're determined to make great pieces of art while also trying to meet the financial realities of making said art.

so first and foremost i disagree that naughty dog has 'botched their development plan'.

but also as someone working in a creative/commercial field i understand that people arent just going to give me money to make something for them with no deadlines and no budget. which is sort of what you are suggesting by removing crunch.

sometimes the vision you had in your head doesnt work out and you need to rework it. so youre either going to a) make something subpar that hits budget and timeline, b) something that is good but costs more than budgeted which can often result in less future funding, or c) you work harder for a period of time to hit budget/timeline/standards. its just a reality.

its so fucking hard to to schedule something as ethereal as creativity then mix that with 'good' gameplay. and a group of people as talented as ambitious as naughty dog seem to be. i can understand why there has been periods of extreme workload but you have to look at what theyve made artistically and commercially and think it is somewhat justified.

Just wrapped up Uncharted LL, next is Hellblade. Gotta finish that up before next week because Destiny 2 will consume me once that comes out

With planning, it is possible to meet deadlines without crunch.

show me proof. sources. anything. i think you'd be surprised at how much unexpected shit comes up and throws out deadlines. ive been working in a commercial/creative field for over 15 years and you just cant accurately plan shit out sometimes. and i dont have to deal with any shit like programming, playtesting, qa, bugs, making sure the game is FUN, etc etc. sometimes you have an idea and you try it out and it doesnt work. or sometimes its close but it need a bit more finesse. or another project comes up and you have to accomodate that into your schedule too. you guys are living in a magical fantasy land where resources arent a factor.

i'm assuming your genius idea of 'planning' (like naughty dog have never heard of this term before) would be to extend the deadline or allow room for unexpected shit or hire more people or be okay with making less money or just getting more money from somewhere. its just not how business works. its not that easy. especially when youre asking someone to finance youre creative project AND you hold incredibly high standards.

Huber saying Yakuza 2 is the worst in the franchise *smh*.

When did he say that? I didn't hear it in Talking Syndrome. Regardless, it's a completely ridiculous thing to say, especially from someone who considers themselves a fan of the series. It's like saying Uncharted 2 is the worst in the Uncharted series.

With planning, it is possible to meet deadlines without crunch.

In the videogame industry? Not often. There's so many different things that can go wrong that you just can't account for them all beforehand.

I'm not a fan of crunch by any means but just saying "this shouldn't happen" isn't a solution.

A little different but I have a friend who works at Lucasfilm (she works on Star Wars stuff) and she eats all three meals a day at work and only goes home to sleep. What's the point of working somewhere cool if all you do is work? I only get to see her once a year when she comes out of the cave, and she can't even talk to anyone about what she does. I used to want to work in the movie business but not anymore, not after seeing her lifestyle.

I've been thinking about about becoming a Patron for a while but my love for Fiasconauts pushed me over the edge. I can only afford $1 for now but hopefully I can up it later on

It's a dumb lifestyle.

Not to everyone. I don't have a job in that field and literally the only thing I do is draw (and go to the gym). It's the only thing I want to do. Guys who have risen to ND levels are surely more focused and passionate than I.

That said it is wrong for any company to require it.

As far as I know it's even a lot more common in Japanese companies (doesn't matter what type of field they are in). People sleep at their workplace as well as far as I know. Of course not everybody, but it's not uncommon (or at least, I have read that multiple times).

I would never do it myself (although I do read my emails during my holiday breaks and weekends and sometimes do respond to them as well if it's urgent), but I don't see anything wrong with it if people choose to basically live at work.

That said, I also think it is wrong if a company expects their people to do so. It should be a choice.
