Utawarerumono Mask of Deception - |OT| Underwater Ray Romano

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
I talked to a guy at the Atlus booth at AX regarding the release date, mentioning the conflicting information. He said that they don't actually have an official date, but are looking to get it out before the end of the year.

So yeah, "coming soon" sounds about right.

Thats a damned shame that its not a confirmed release date yet. Odd wonder if they were not able to finish the localization in time changing the release date. Considering they had released the following below.

Oh please no

If there's one game my heart can't take a delay of, it's this.

Could still be 9/5, I only talked to one guy and he may not have been perfectly informed.

Goddamn it Haku you fucking idiot,
fixing the mill
is slightly more valuable to everyone than carrying bags or hitting rocks, you'd probably sleep and eat for two weeks by doing it.

Game's been enjoyable enough so far, but this little sequence was just dumb, mainly because of the MC. I guess I've seen worse VN protagonists, but I hope he starts growing as a character soon. The beginning has also been very similar to the first one, which is kind of weird to me.

Oh. Well, at least that might make September a bit less packed with big Vita releases.

Edit: Missed the newest page of the thread. Though I guess my point still stands.

Man, 2 bath scenes already? Whoever said the game doesn't have any fan service was lyingggggg. Not even gonna bother with those, just tap-tap-tap through. Quite a lot of SOL stuff so far actually, but thankfully it's been alright, though a bit repetitive.

Anyway, anyone mind telling me (in spoiler tags) the overall number of fights over the course of the story? Would love to have a way of telling how far in I am. Obviously it wouldn't be very precise, but the fights have been fairly evenly spaced so far.

e: yeah maybe I should've googled it lol. Wasn't hard to find. Looks like the number is
17
, which is actually a fair bit less than I was expecting. I think I've done 5 or 6 already so I'm a bit further in than I was expecting.

Well, going by that metric, at least.

You should have read the OT as it clearly states that fanservice exists.

Also please do make more use of spoiler tags as dont ruin things for others who have yet to play the game. Which includes making statements bout scenes that exist and such.

I know it did, was just making fun of the dude who said it had no fan service in the VN thread I guess.

I'm not going to spoiler tag the fact that there are bathing scenes, though, sorry. That's just stupid. If knowing something like that might bum you out, you really shouldn't be reading the OT. You have to be a bit of an idiot to not immediately think of baths when you hear the game has some fan service in it - or even if you didn't know - and as you can see from the post you quoted and the one before, I do actually try to spoiler tag even fairly minor things that I feel might affect someone's enjoyment of the game.

e: so this post won't be completely off-topic: the
Oshtor/Ukon
reveal was dumb.
Kind of predicted it, but thought to myself that it couldn't be true cause what the hell would he do, use a fake mustache and beard? And I guess that's exactly what he did. Why not just have Oshtor's mask cover his whole face?

And so that my reactions won't be all negative, the game has been enjoyable so far. Been playing it all day, after all. Not a lot of humor that has made me laugh, but aside from the super groanworthy
endless violence upon the MC
cliche, it has made me smile a lot more than roll my eyes which is better than most VNs. I've also really liked the SRPG parts, even if they are a bit simplistic.

There's nothing in that post that is a spoiler.

Hey i was corrected in the Vn thread and explained that those scenes didn't matter to me because they were short and pretty innofensive in the overall story.
In the end , all it matters is the definition of what is fanservice to anyone. To me those scenes didn't leave much of an impact to the point that after finishing the game i forgot they were there.

I actually had to go back to look at the gallery to remember that they were in.
To me , the fanservice this game has is all the stuff from the first game, the rest didn't matter to me

I know, just having a bit of fun. No offense meant.

Making pretty good progress, I think. Should be done in a few days. I like how the most SOL-y scenes are always the ones you pick yourself in the camp parts, so I know I can just kind of glance through them usually if things get too boring lol.

Most of the SOL have quite a bit of world bulding in them. heck some of them only exist to introduce another event down the line.

Mikado just gave me the pedobait twins
, how far in approximately am I and will things hopefully pick up again soon? The last, I don't know, 5 or 6-ish hours have been a fucking pain, endless repetition of the exact same jokes that were maybe-funny the first time, with the rare interesting event once an hour that has kept me going so far. But if I've got another 5 hours of reading the same goddamn jokes, I'm just gonna drop the game here.

FWIW, the game was a lot more interesting before
we became Oshtor's secret underlings
.

That's where I dropped the game and just sent it back. Dunno if it gets better, but yes, I was enjoying it quite a bit and then the whole game just came to a screeching halt.

Can't return a digital game, unfortunately lol. I played a bit more and things got slightly more interesting for an hour or so, but then I was again greeted by the base screen with 4 choices and I just kind of blankly stared at it for a few moments and turned my PS4 off. I might return to it later, but unless someone tells me it does pick up again soon, I doubt I will.

I have never read such dismaying impressions posts. If you'd have stuck with it, you may have found it to be one of the best narratives in gaming - period.

The first real "battle" scenario happens pretty shortly after this and from there the plot takes off.

Dude, I've got like 15 hours on the clock, I've been stuck with it for a while now. I'm going to preemptively dismiss it as one of the best narratives in gaming just for insane pacing problems, but I'm interested in seeing where the story goes when it picks up again.

Just what I wanted to hear - I'll keep at it, then!

Yep, the game fucking stops right there, and it's gonna stay there for a while.

Only way I managed was by playing some mobile games while reading the game's text

I love how many genuinely interesting skills and abilities all these characters have, even when compared to many other SRPGs... But you don't have to pay any attention to them at all on normal since the game's so easy lol.

Not that I'm complaining, getting stuck in a visual novel would be frustrating.

And yeah, looks like the story is definitely picking up and getting interesting again, glad I had the energy to push through those final SOL events.

e: this is a shot in the dark, but anyone know the name of the song that plays, for example, during the event where
you just lay on Kuon's lap after you've collapsed after escaping from the Tatari-filled ruins
? It's this melancholic all-piano (I think) song. Kind of reminds me of a slower version of the song Leaves in the Wind from this online game.

I'm not gonna buy the OST cause I think it's otherwise pretty unremarkable, but I really like this song and I'm sure I'll find it on Youtube at some point.

If I'm not wrong it's a song from the first game, Flowers in the Moonlight ~Fumiriru~.

You can also find it in the Leaf Piano Collection 2005.

(Big spoilers)
The Mikado died and we just returned to Yamamamaototo.
Shouldn't be much left, right? Gotta finish this tonight or tomorrow, cause when I start playing FF XII, I doubt I'd return to this.

Finished it. Good guess dude, looks like it took me pretty much exactly 3 hours lol.

Weird experience tbh. Lots of very low lows (fuck everything about that 5-7 hour let's-repeat-the-same-shit-jokes-and-nothing-else fest) with some... Okay? highs. Story was surprisingly predictable considering all the reactions I've seen. I'm not going to claim I precisely predicted all the twists or anything like that, but I don't think any of them surprised me in the least.

Serious parts were for the most part enjoyable, though I had major problems with two parts:
the scale of the Uzurusha war was totally fucked (almost seemed like the whole war took place in an area the size of a neighborhood)
and
I personally found the "Haku is now Oshtor" thing profoundly dumb.

There were some SOL events that were alright, but most of it was just kind of bad due to being super filler-y and the humor falling flat real hard. I don't think most of these jokes work in written form at all. Also the part I mentioned earlier, sheesh. Can't believe someone okay'd it.

Funny how someone mentioned this being TiTS FC level of "gimme the sequel now" earlier, because after all the hype that game's ending got I found myself incredibly indifferent and apathetic about the cliffhanger and whatever happens next, and despite this game being... Pretty good as a whole in all honesty, my feelings after everything seem to be more or less the same.

Some interesting mysteries still remain, though, so if the next game seriously dials back on the SOL stuff and has better pacing (or I just have nothing else to do in my free time), I'll check it out when it's released. And, unlike with
Joshua and Estelle, I actually quite liked Haku and Kuon, so of course I want to see them find each other again. Romances are nice.

So yeah, it's not even close to GOTY material for me, but maybe something like a... 6 or 7 out of ten as a whole? Hard to say because it was so uneven. Looks like for once I actually agree with a game's metascore.

edit: also the SRPG parts were great. And fuck Nekone.

Couldn't agree more with that latter point, I actually thought it took away from
the game's ending, and the whole thing reeked of super-convenient writing.
Still, it leads to more interesting possibilities so I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Super convenient writing was, in my opinion, a problem with the story in general too, that was just the most egregious case so I had to mention it. A lot of times I felt that things went just a bit too swimmingly and there were just a couple of convenient coincidences too many.
The betrayalton that happens in Yamata when you're in Tuskur was another major part of the story that felt at times a bit too convenient, but I let that slide because I like those kinds of twists. e: and the Uzurusha war obviously, which I mentioned in the post you quoted. "Hey guys, let's go to this cave for seemingly no reason and- Oh wow is that Entua? In the cave we just entered?! What a coincidence!"

But you're definitely right on it leading to more interesting possibilities. Intriguing plot developments in the sequel won't retroactively make the scenes any better, but at least they can justify them. Let's hope they didn't fuck up this chance.

I'm trying to get the Kamunagi of Chaining trophy; but I got nothing, and I'm pretty sure I've tried everything.
Is there anything I'm missing here? I might have to do them one by one, writing the ones I already did.

Maybe you're missing the Haku's chain in the first mission, which is a different one.

AtlusUSA released a new trailer for Mask of Truth focusing on the new features:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_8xC1_sH34

80+ hours, SRPG part of the game significantly expanded with new modes, combos,....

Unfortunately character level doesn't seems to be carried over from the first game.

Even if they improve the mechanics, if the maps are as easy and straightforward as this game, it won't matter to me really. I played the game pretty suboptimally and I didn't really take advantage of a lot of the mechanics but I still had an easy time.

If there's one thing that subverted my expectations about this game, it's that I was relieved when the SRPG segments were over so I could get back to the plot.

That's not a slight against the SRPG segments, just testament to just how fantastic a VN this is.

Yeah, battle system only gets used on post game (Dream Battle).

Fun mode, though. Do like how it feels impossible at first glance, but with strategy everything works out.

Jachdwald has two stances, I had to do his counter with the second stance to unlock the trophy. It may be that.

As a heads-up, amazon.com have moved the Vita version of Mask of Truth's date forward from November 30 to September 5, so it looks like it'll make the date after all!

THIS GAME!

It's hitting me in all the right places. I'm coming off the back of Steins;Gate 0 last month which was a bit of a disappointment in all honesty. I'm only 4 hours in, but I'm enjoying the pacing of the narrative here. The banter between Kuon and Haku is really fun, I love the play on exaggeration on everything leading to a lot of misundertanding between those two. Maroro is brilliant as well. The music, the art, the localization, everything is great. I hope it can keep the quality up.

The only negative thing I'll say about this game so far, is that some of the text is hard to read because its such a small font during the SRPG parts. Still readable but its a bit annoying on the Vita. Is it like that on the PS4?

http://www.ticgn.com/playstation/utawarerumono-mask-of-truth-west/

This article says that Mask of Truth takes 80 hours to finish? Can anyone confirm?

Regarding Mask of Truth, I recall the game being mentioned by Sony Japan as a Ps4pro enhanced title.

Do we know what kind of improvements were patched in? 4k support, maybe?

It was 720p on regular PS4 so I can't see 4k support being a thing - maybe 1080p.

(The art on the disc is probably not high res enough to look good in 4k either)

Fuck, this is going to be a loooong ride.

Well the first one was 50 hours long for me, probably due to the fact that I put it on auto. So 100 hours with this one? damm
With so many games coming in september I suppose I will have to skip text once I've finished reading it.

Anyway, I still don't know if I should get this on ps4 instead of vita. It took me some time to accustom myself to the graphics in the battles in vita version. Considering this game's scale maybe I should go with ps4 version.

Only 1 week left.

Yeah, I had a feeling this was most definitely not running at 1080p. Eh, non that big of a deal tbh.

Anyway, just got to the part where
Kuon and Haku are showing Aruruu and Camyu around. Damn, having played the first game is paying off nicely...
Didn't realise how much I missed them.

If I'm lucky, my local store should have the 3rd this Friday.
Guess I gotta step up my game :p.

The first game took me a little over 50 hours as well, but there's no way I'm skipping once I've read the text, I love listening to the voice work.

Also, I'm currently playing Mask of Truth on the Vita and there's nothing wrong if you're used to the Vita version of Mask of Deception.

If anyone is sensitive to spoilers, skip the animated intro from Mask of Truth. I read that before when Atlus USA uploaded it on YouTube, but it's also in the game and it does contain spoilers for the very game.
