TCL P607 P Series ( the new mid range/budget 4k/HDR recommendation)

Kroger has a deal right now where you can get a $100 Best Buy gift card for $85. Would it be better to get six of those and ultimately get the TV now for $510, or do you all think the TV would be cheaper during Black Friday?

Yeah. Sorry guys but I just can't abide Movie mode. I'm with you on warm color temp. but Normal is so much better. Mario + Rabbids looks so friggin' dull on Movie mode. For now I'm pretty satisfied with this setting from CNET:

Bright room settings:

TV Brightness: Brighter
Picture mode: Normal
Picture size: Direct

Advanced picture settings:

Picture mode: Normal
Local contrast: Off
Backlight: 60
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 100
Sharpness: 0
Color: 45
Tint: 0
Color Temperature: Warm
Game mode: Off

I thought Rocket League looked a bit dull on the RTings settings until I got used to them. TVs are typically calibrated by default to be really bright and vibrant so they'll catch the attention of shoppers, so changing them to more accurate settings can be a bit jarring at first. After adjusting myself I'm perfectly happy with the RTings settings.

I haven't tried the settings you posted. I'd rather not make myself go crazy switching back and forth to see which I like better/think is more accurate lol.

Okay so since everybody looked like lobster people I went back to the RTings settings for Cable and Streaming. For Video games I think I may still stick with Normal for picture mode. And sorry but anybody know how to turn off the Info box in the top left corner of the screen in the Roku Netflix app?

Press the * (settings) button on the roku remote before playing a title, the box will disappear.

Yeah, so he's my two cents on why Normal Picture mode at Normal Brightness with Warm color temp is the way to go: Pull out the Switch and look at the screen, it'll be identical to the tv image at these settings. At Movie there's a mismatch.

The Switch screen is too blue/cool. It's the one thing I dislike about it, it's jarring because I have all my displays calibrated (I have a colorimeter) but there's no way to correct the Switch so every time I fire it up it's instantly noticeable how off the temperature of it's screen is.

Even iPhones allow for slight adjustment using Night Shift slider to adjust the temperature to kinda correct their screens but sigh, gotta live with the cooler Switch screen...

Yea I use low power or normal with warm temps and the TV pops but has similar color space to movie but I soften the highlights a bit. Especially for games.

I'll post as soon as I can get to TV and also look at expert settings. I had to adjust colors in xpert to get closer to movie even on warm and drop contrast to reduce the bloom but keep some pop.

Ran movie mode for weeks before this switch

Pull the trigger !

Yeah, I'm heavily considering it!

If you're fine with waiting Why not both?

I would rather have the TV before the Xbox One X releases on November 7th, but I would wait a few weeks if I suspected there would be a good price drop on the TV on Black Friday. I'm just not sure how realistic it is for this TV to be cheaper than $510 online then, because I'm not going to any stores in person.

With the features the TV has it practically is already at a Black Friday price.

If you have one, you could buy it with a credit card that has price protection, which usually ranges from 2-3 months, and get reimbursed for the difference if it does drop on Black Friday.

Wait so what settings do you use?

Settings, I am in a pretty dark room but with ambient backlight and I like my games to pop a bit (more than movie mode) but not look blown out

I used movie mode and some game colors that I know are correct colors to adjust to get close and these may only be good for my TV

For games..

Dark
Low power
Local contrast :eek:ff or low *note, I don't have a clouding issue when off
Backlight 45
Brightness 50
Contrast 95
Sharpness 3
Color 47
Tint 0
Color temp: warm
Game mode: on

Expert

WB settings I don't touch

Color space:
Red -18 1 -2
Green 6 15 -8
Blue 0 8 -8
Cyan 0 -2 0
Magenta 000
Yellow 000

Note, this is with an Xbox output to TV.

I used a variation of this for cable TV and streaming SDR with lower backlight, high local contrast, and slightly different color space setting

Hi guys, I'm really hoping someone can help me figure out an audio problem I'm having with this TV and my Astro A50's. I'd like to be able to use the A50's for both the PS4 Pro and apps on the TV, but I can't get them to output sound from the TV. On the Astro forums, a rep posted this:

"On your PS4, you would just need to set the HDMI output as your primary output port and then change the audio format to Bitstream Dolby. That will allow the PS4 to output Dolby Digital audio to your TV through HDMI. On your TV, there should be an option under the sound settings where you can set the output to External Speaker / Optical and then change the digital sound out to Auto"

I'm connecting the A50 to the TV with an optical wire, and from the A50 to the PS4 Pro via USB. Does anyone else have A50's or similar headphones and are able to output sound from their PS4 and TV when they switch out from one to the other?

I'm looking to buy the 55" TCL P607 sometime in the future for my apartment, but I would need to get a new TV stand in order to do so. How wide does the stand need to be in order to accommodate for the TV's size (as I know its legs are on the wide end)?

Don't recall exactly, but their website has that measurement.

Off the top of my head I want to say it's 38.6" between the legs. I ran into the same problem when I bought the tv since my stand was like 36". I just bought some legs that mount on the VESA holes on the back instead of a whole new stand.

My measurements aren't exact since all I have to use right now is a 12" ruler, but I came up with approximately 39".

This worked for me and is basically what I set on my own, although I have the brightness on normal and may try dark. The Rtings settings using the Movie picture mode produced a picture that is just too dull, color-wise. Might be better for movies/TV but I use this TV for games 99% of the time.

Here is the Samsung Rtngs review
http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/mu6300

Had very low input lag and overall high marks for image quality, for the price, but I'm not sure it is full array backlight dimming or wide color gamut which tcl has

I've never looked at it before but maybe someone else will chime in that has

I have the tcl and love it though and think it bests the Samsung. I will keep reading see what I can find out

Edit
Video games 8.2
Hdr gaming 7.6

Is this better than he Samsung un50mu6300? Quick plz I'm aT Best Buy and they don't have the 607!

I'm probably too late but I'd say the TCL is better. Higher peak HDR brightness, wide color gamut, local dimming, etc.

Did you ask for the 607 or the 605? The 605 is best buys version of the 607.

Thank you both! Unfortunately they did not have the 605 in stock. I did not buy the Samsung either. I did find the Sony X800D for $600 at frys. I'm also considering the newer X900E at $900. Any thoughts on those? Thanks in advance!

I would still wait until the 605 is in Stock instead of getting the X800D. The X900E is a much better TV with great peak brightness, wide color gamut, and good input lag. The main concern I'd have with the TV is the use of Android as the OS. The link below is full of people who have the X900E, so you should be able to get a good idea from the posts there:

No. It's not.

If you want a bonafide better TV, the only real option is a Sony X900E, whichs costs over $600 more! EDIT: Just saw you say $900!!! Get that NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're not willing to spend that much then this TV is the better option than pretty much anything else.

It basically goes like this:

If you've got less than a $1000 or less to spend, get a P605/607. Save the $400.
If you've got $1500 or less get the X900E
If you've got $2000 or less get the X930E
Beyond that get an LG or Sony OLED.1

The above applies to 55" If you want a 65" you had better be prepared to spend at least an extra $500.

I was just looking at the 607 on Amazon, and I saw this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTGM5I9/?tag=neogaf0e-20

For $400, is it that much worse?

I've been waiting for the 607 to go down in price and saw this. Since the 607 is sold out on Amazon now I picked the 405 up. Looks like the only difference is HDR10 vs Dolby Vision and a wider Color Gamut on the 607. RTings has both at similiar or equal levels in regards to gaming. Both have the low input lag of 14ms. Overall I think its really worth it at that price!

The S series does not have any local dimming, it makes a huge difference.

The S-series is certainly not a bad series, but spend the extra $$ and get the P series.

Wait it out.

That's true too, but I play in a dark room and there are work arounds to the brightness issue. I think overall, for those of us too late to get the 607 while it was in stock or can't/won't drop $700+ on it at the retailers that currently do have it, the S isn't a bad substitute. Especially fi you're just using it for 4K HDR gaming.

Edit: Well I WAS content with my purchase but now you have me doubting myself lol I watched the local dimming video thing on both the tvs on RTings and I honestly saw no difference. Is it really worth the extra 300-4004

Local dimming needs to seen in action.

It's impossible to emphasize the difference in a video. A video just can't properly demonstrate how much better the blacks are. Especially since you are likely seeing it from a TV/PC without deep blacks!

For me, I will not buy a TV without it.

HOWEVER.

HOWEVER.

Local dimming has a much great impact on video content (4K UHD bluray) than gaming. IMO.

The only thing missing from this TV is true 120Hz.

I appreciate your replies. So I must ask, if I am purchasing this strictly for HDR gaming (and the occasional UHD movie but mainly gaming on the Xbox One X), do you think I'll be ok with the S?

It's up to you. Local dimming certainly benefits gaming, but I wouldn't say its the end of the world if you don't have it.

For me this TV is a stop gap until OLED becomes more affordable.

The lower and lower you get into low budget territory I begin to wonder why even bother upgrading your tv at that point?

Hdr without a decently bright tv or wide color gamut is basically not really HDR at that point. you might as well wait it out and save up for awhile so you can actually get something that can take decent advantage of your new console or content.

I bought this tv because oled tv's are still insanely expensive, in three years I will probably buy the oled equivalent of this tv.

You can't use local dimming with game mode on, however, right? I'm pretty much never going to use it then. Happy I got the P, but I'm sure the S is perfectly fine. Rtings still liked it.

EDIT: Never mind; local dimming does work with game mode.

you can. you just need to have the latest firmware installed. for whatever reason tcl has pulled the latest ones from the auto-updater but they are still available through their support site if you wanted to do a factory reset and install them.

Thanks, yeah, I need to check my firmware then. I updated it when I got the TV, but I'm pretty sure something is turned off with game mode on. Maybe it's another feature...

prior to the latest firmware updates, local dimming could not be used with game mode. so you're probably just not on one of the firmwares that allow it.

their updates have been weird. they released them through the autoupdater and then seemingly pulled them a day later. they've done this with the last two updates. so you see a lot of confused posters asking why they can't auto-update and thinking their tvs are busted. :\

While it's not 1k+ nits like many HDR fans would like it's comparable to a lot of other HDR tv's, there aren't a ton that get over 1k nits.

Even the A1E doesn't get over 700 nits brightness and the color gamut is comparable to the X930E, which is a $1,800 tv.
