Nintendo First-Party Thread: The Teams, The Games, The Future

I think we'll have a direct extremely soon, so hopefully we'll have a better indication of the upcoming line-up.
I'm especially interested in Q1 2018. I don't think they'll reveal any Q2-Q3 games until the usual January direct, but they have to give dates for the first few games before. Will Yoshi or Kirby release first ? Yoshi seemed pretty far along as they played it during Treehouse and it already looked solid.

Nintendo is in a interesting spot right now, several studios working on unannouced games:
Retro, Sakurai, Next Level Games, From Software, Platinum.

And several franchises which we only heard whispers and rumours so far:
Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Smash, Pikmin.

I think next Direct will be focused on end of the year games and couple of trailers for already announced games. No big surprises.

The January Direct will be the bomb dropping one. An then 6months of speculation and hype for E3.

I would personally rather see Monster Games do a Diddy Kong Racing type game assuming they aren't working on another project.

Again, Monster is and has been fully tied up with making NASCAR games for PS4/X1. You're not getting any Nintendo stuff from them anytime soon.

Okay, so non-Retro things to speculate on.

-What comes out first from EPD 4: Mario Maker 2 or Pikmin 4?
-Will Smash for Switch be a GotY edition of Smash 4 or a new Smash 5?

... I don't know what else to speculate on D:

Hmm, well I guess we could think about whether or not the Mario Kart guys will make ARMS 2 or a new IP.

I think Pikmin next year and SMM in 2019.

I think Mario Maker and Pikmin could both get announced at (or by) E3. The timing is right for both.

At this point they won't just do a simple Smash 4 port, but I also don't think they're going to start from scratch. I could see something like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Everything included plus more (characters from Splatoon, ARMS etc.)

I still don't think Sakurai is working on Smash. I'd be surprised (and a bit disappointed) if he wasn't working on a new project ala Kid Icarus Uprising or Meteos.

I thought that it was confirmed he was working on some new project?
That said, I really think he feels like he can be just a supervisor for Smash from now on.

There does seem to be a lot pointing to Metroid Prime 4 being in Development longer than some think. I don't think they had plans to reveal MP4 but decided to late to avoid any backlash against Samus Returns being 3DS only.

I agree. I think Reggie talked about it at E3 that they had to announce it.

I think we'll get a Direct relatively soon. I won't be surprised if we have to wait a couple of weeks, but if they do it tomorrow, I won't be surprised either.

Soon would be nice. I just want a new presentation to watch in the style of the April Direct again.

I'm thinking "Super Mario Bros. 5" or whatever they call the next 2d Mario will release before Mario Maker 2 to give them a new style for people to create levels with. Maybe 2d Mario in 2019 and then Mario Maker 2 in 2020.

That probably makes sense.

New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are two of the 15 best selling games of all time (both at 30m sold).

NSMBU didn't have many ideas and kind of just was like NSMBW again though... Hopefully they have more inspiration this time around.

That would make sense. I know whatever they come up with the next 2D Mario is going to blow us away. Nintendo took it easy with the New series (artstyle and music), but that series is over.

Retro finished working on Tropical Freeze in ~August 2013 iirc. We're looking at a possible five years of development time. Hope that means it's massive in scope.

Actually I suppose it's possible they finished the game a while ago and Nintendo decided to shelve it until next year because they felt the lineup for 2016 was good enough already?

November.

Really? Didn't know Reggie mentioned that. It's just a logical decision since MP4 and the new Pokémon Switch were announced at the same time in the presentation and kinda seemed out of place compared to the other titles announced. Like they were thrown together at the last minute.

Monster Games and Retro began partnering up during the 3DS/Wii U era. It's been stated Retro is capable of taking on one project as well as assisting with another such as what they did with MK7 and DKCR3D. They could be working on one Switch project of their own as well as working with Monster Games on another title. Monster Games also has been mysteriously quiet after releasing Pilot Wings Resort and DKCR3D on 3DS. If Monster and Retro worked together on a title, I would love if they did F-Zero, Diddy Kong Racing or Donkey Kong Country Returns.

- Mario will be the first priority. Mario Maker 2 would be easy and quick to develop for. However, another poster pointed out a new 2D Mario. I agree that I could see a new 2D Mario releasing first then a year later including that engine in MM2. Granted Mario Maker is a major ip and I don't see them delaying that title past 2019. Even that is pushing it given how easy it is to develop for. Given statements Miyamoto made about Pikmin 4, I think it could be a 2nd half 2018-2019 title. What I could see:
2D Mario/Mario Maker 2- Q2 2018
Pikmin 4- Q3 2018
2D Mario/Mario Maker- Q3 2019
I think Mario Maker and Pikmin could both get announced at (or by) E3. The timing is right for both.

Agreed. I think we'll see the next project by the 2D Mario/Mario Maker team around the same time as Pikmin. Granted I think 2D Mario/Mario Maker could hit before E3. The team hasn't released anything since Mario Maker in 2015. Mario Maker 3DS was handle d by NAT.

Also I think it will be essentially a SSB 4.5. Engine updated and optimized for Switch, now that it no longer has to worry about 3DS restrictions. 5-10 new characters including Snake, Ice Climbers, Wolf, Bomberman, Marie(Callie alt), Inkling, Spring Man, and Chorus Kids. Some characters are updated and altered as well. Also includes new stages and items. All characters from 4 return but not necessarily all stages, items and modes. Majority of content returns but some superfluous content is cut in favor of new content. New modes including a short adventure mode.

Something like the above is the level of content, I'd expect from Sakurai. He would never do a simple port and he has a tendency to throw everything but the kitchen sink into his games in terms of content. We know he is working on Smash since Nintendo put out hiring ads for a new Smash project right after Smash DLC finished. I'd say 2+ years would be sufficient time to accomplish this. I also expect/hope this to be Sakurai' s directorial swan song for the series. I think he should move on to a supervisor position of the series and be able to work on different projects.

Regarding Smash i think they have been holding back on it to give the other fighting games that they are realising this year(arms, pokken) some time to breath.

I think Mario Maker could be happening pretty soon. After Splatoon it's probably the biggest, most memorable new IP the Wii U brought to the table. That and Animal Crossing I can see being next year's fall tentpoles. Definitely be announced by E3.

I can see 2D Mario coming the year after and maybe a patch/DLC for Mario Maker to work in elements from it to tie in. As far off as it seems right now, I think that, Pikmin 4, and 2D Zelda would be good 2019 titles... Mario sports and/or Mario Party too.

How do you make Mario Maker without 2 screens and no touch capabilities (when Switch is docked)?

Gyro pointing is one option for docked mode. On Wii U you could play the game entirely on Gamepad so only one screen/handheld mode wouldn't be a problem at all.

I think Mario Maker and Pikmin could both get announced at (or by) E3. The timing is right for both.

I'm hoping for something between MK8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2. Keep the core gameplay, characters, stages, etc. with some new additions mixed in. Revamp as much else as possible to keep it fresh.

They definitely announced Prime 4 to prevent another Federation Force fiasco from happening and basically sending yet another Metroid game to die because it wasn't the one people wanted.

I could be wrong but they said they've been trying to not announce new games if they're not ready to be shown or at least close from release. What a coincidence they backpedaled on that with Prime 4 right after announcing a remake for a console that's on its way out.

I'm sure Monster and Retro are working on a project together now. Retro has finished their last game in 2013, and Miyamoto said back then that they could probably handle two games at the same time. So with such a lengthy development period, one of the games (probably the racer with Monster Games) has to be finished by now. The other title has to be a big online FPS - as big multiplayer testing/QA takes a while. The game is probably going to be set in the Raven Blade universe as they still have all the concepts in their office.

With the racer being finished, Retro is now likely going to continue on Eternal Darkness 2 so that Monster can fully focus on the NASCAR games.

Am I doing this right?😈

force undocked mode for creator portion.
I think Nintendo likes the idea of multiple people watching and building a level together. I don't think they will force undocked mode, but it will still likely be the ideal way to make levels. I wouldn't be surprised if they packed a stylus with the game or something.

The Switch doesn't have a resistive touchscreen, so styli don't work. Try it on your phone. The Switch has a similar screen.

I am all-in for building levels together in Docked Mode. That seems like an idea worth trying out for Nintendo!

I don't get this. Yeah, creating levels is easier/more intuitive with a touchscreen, but people are acting like it's literally impossible to use a level editor with a regular controller. Hell, everything's already aligned to a big, chunky grid, so there's absolutely no reason whatsoever that people couldn't get by just fine with a d-pad.

So TGS is coming up, do Nintendo have any kind of history with the show? Is it likely they may get make some announcements?

Their history is that they reliably never ever do anything for TGS or are there. Ever. So don't expect anything. Zero.

Maybe a Direct around TGS time? I thought Reggie said they had more surprises lined up for this year

We say that every year and it just never happens. One year they had a 3DS Direct around that time. Otherwise it's only been game-specific Directs.

The wisest thing you can do is not trying to predict when Directs happen.

We're getting a Direct this month makes a lot of sense. It doesn't matter if TGS is here or not. Next week or the week after was going to be the optimal time for one.

I think we may not get another Direct for awhile; instead we'll have the Nintendo World Championships in place of a Direct. I'm convinced that the "multiplayer action fighting" 3DS Kirby game that's due out this holiday will be revealed and played during the finals, à la Metroid Prime: Blast Ball, and we may get more reveals like that as well.
MOTHER 3, anyone?

The Nindies showcase may as well have been a Direct.

Yeah, sort of. Even I'll casually call it a direct even though it's not technically one. I want a general Nintendo Direct so we can hear about big games and 2018 games. I seriously thought we would've got an Animal Crossing Direct for the app game and Switch game.

how long is it until TGS,btw?

It's like exactly two weeks. I'm so EXCITED to see Project Octopath Traveler. It's getting a nice 45 minutes presentation.

If it's not listed as a direct on the Japanese page, I don't count it. The Nindies presentation wasn't even uploaded to any of the other Nintendo YT accounts. It was strictly an NoA thing. I doubt it had any influence on the direct schedule.

I mean, I think Nintendo should want to detail their Q1 and Q2 lineup before 2018 so I'm guessing they have a Direct soon just to say what Yoshi's release date is at least.

restating just as a refresher.

The direct schedule that doesn't exist. :)

Eh, you know what I mean. I'm just saying the Nindies event wouldn't affect whether a direct would happen soon.

restating just as a refresher.

I'm pretty much done trying to predict them at this point lol. There was a time that a general direct would consistently happen every 2-3 months if you included the E3 digital events. 2014 was a weird year because we almost got nothing after that E3, then things started to back to "normal" in 2015 but that stopped after E3 as well and it's been like that ever since.

I mean, Nintendo probably would have delayed Xenoblade 2 to 2018 if they had nothing for early 2018 right?

But it's getting close to 2018 and they still only have Kirby confirmed for Spring 2018.

I think they'll stick to the January "blow the lid off the coming year" tradition going forth. Kimishima's Nintendo's MO so far has been playing their cards really close to their chest.
