it's destiny. The new 2-player starter will have eKylo/ePhasma at 30 points. Kylo's ability is actually pretty damn good considering the game is so meta heavy and you can make a strong guess as to what they will have in their hands.. Hell... new Kylo is objectively better than old Kylo IMHO. three actual damage sides (instead of 2 and a highly conditional), and an ability that IMHO gives you more than a 50/50 chance at dealing two damage in most cases.

Watch them only put one die in for each
supposedly the design team said they are working to get away from that. Destiny (4 starters) and L5R (three cores) were definitely the tipping point. I think FFG has a wide enough presences on retail shelves at this point that they can knock it off with the core/starter set shenanigans.

Went to my first store championship. Got top 4, lost in be semifinals. Got a playmat, and for my first big event definitely can't complain.
One thing I am going to complain about is my extended local scenes attitude towards meta decks, specifically Poe Maz, which I played. People all day were complaining about how unfair and unfun it is, and there being so many people playing it. Only 6 out of 33 is not a lot by any means. Honestly it really put me off. In my 9 months playing Pokemon I never heard people bitch like this at a large event. You play meta decks, that's what you do to win, and if something is being overplayed you counter it. Poe Maz is good, but not unbeatable by any means.

Haha I dunno what to say about Poe/Maz -- it's just something about that deck that makes people irrational. I've been playing Poe/Maz pretty much since the set came out, way before there was a tinygrimes video etc. so I totally know what you're talking about, though here in the bay area it was always pretty lighthearted ribbing about Poe/Maz and not the kind of stuff you see on Facebook where people are having conniptions and going on embarrassing diatribes.
Funny thing is GenCon Finals were FN mirror, so pretty much anyone with FN can just stfu straight out, and other people yeah playing Poe/Maz is absolutely legitimate. Just like people are entitled to bring Tier Infinity trash on the 1/20 chance they land their combo. It's all legit unless something is legitimately auto-win broken which Poe/Maz is definitely not. It's not nearly boring to play or to counterplay if you have any idea what you're doing too -- it's just really tense and every point of damage counts, and yeah sometimes they will get the nuts but hey Vader can get 3/3 + No Mercy Turn 1 shit happens.
Alllllll that said -- I really enjoyed this meta but I'm also stoked for EAW to come out and some of the more powerful and now prevalent stuff to get knocked down a peg. Good to keep things fresh.

That something is complete bypassing of dice rolling on Poe ability coupled with Maz having 50% chance to focus Poe die and resolve it immediately.

Oh yeah sorry I know the actual mechanics of the deck, I just mean power-level wise there are other T1 decks and even T1.5 decks that can very much compete. I had to 2-0 Poe/Maz against a very good player to win my last SC with freaking Phasma so it's not anything to rage about before the game's even started imo, especially in an SC environment.

Luke/Rey is a high-variance deck and it does have what you need to consistently beat Poe/Maz, which is the ability to do 8+ damage (up to 11) Turn 1 for just two bucks and burn down Poe early Turn 2. It is very vulnerable to Defensive Position usually but yeah if Luke rolls bonkers the deck can beat literally anyone (even Rainbow ). Reason it's Tier 2/3 is because the other half of the time it won't draw Force Speed or Luke won't hit his rolls or My Ally Is the Force will come out at the wrong time, and it can't even beat Tier 2. It's a very inconsistent deck but sounds like you just got its good games unfortunately for you. Jay from Knights of Ren was trying to play it at our last two Store Champs and he ultimately bailed on the deck for the same reason I did a few months ago, which is the above.
This is totally subjective so fair play either way, but I think FN playing out eight different weapons in one turn, none of which can be controlled in many cases is more "rule bending" with much more frequency than Poe/Maz. I think the distinction is all academic anyway since if FFG is addressing one they will definitely address the other or it will be left too far ahead of the field most likely.

FN is far more broken than Poe / Maz is, but all three of those cards need to get fixed.

Going to a GNK on Saturday to pick up my starter boxes. Last tournament of SOR meta. I actually wanted to try something new like Vader/Guard but I haven't had any time to play the past few weeks so probably just bring my tournament Phasma. I would bring something T2/3 but FN is so popular here I imagine there'll be a lot of FN and I don't like just losing.

Ended up going 6-2 at Nationals. It got me 10th place, si I missed the cut, but was only .03 SOS out. Had any of my opponents won just one other game (I think thats the math) I would have been in top 8. Oh well, a shit load better than I expected to do. Two amazing games in there, my last three I believe. An emperor games that came down to him dealing 6+4 with emperor dice and I NEEDED to field medic immediately before to give Poe maz 11 health. That left maz alive to claim and him nothing to resolve. Hit him with double PU which was enough by 1.. only because he had Force Illusion but only one card left in his deck. Then an emokids that I lucked out on a Kylo double special resolve to pull PU from my hand twice on Poe, instead of the only other card in my hand........ U-Wing... That ended with Maz and Cunning rolling out first and resolving Mind Probe. He had Force Illusion but not 5 cards in his deck. Last game was just a slugfest. I rolled out Poe double focus that he didnt mitigate. So those became a rocket launcher and falcon into maz my second action. He got his own special and 3/1 which went 7 into my Maz. Next round I hit my Hit and Run which activated Poe and put out my PU. I also hit both my 3/1 sides and resolved those the next action. Meanwhile he Thermaled and rerolled and got special for Poe to 7. So I have 5 health and he has 4. We both have PU out but I have BF. The game was over in like 6 mins. But man with Poe Maz mirror matches all it takes is your opponent to just have slightly better card draw. That game ultimately came down to my single Hit and Run.

In this case they can almost be forgiven. It sucks for existing players but $30 for ~50 cards and 16 dice isnt awful. Most card games charge half of that alone for about as many cards. It also means two players can go in on two sets and have choices to make on a legal deck.. its really not a bad product. Just sucks for existing players wanting the handful of fairly good cards in there. But for new players its probably one of the better sets FFG has released.
There was a ballsy Dooku/Jabba mill player here this weekend. Spent the first half of the game never even rolling out Dooku. He was literally just an eventual meat shield where the guy claimed early-ish every round (Command Center). Went 5-3 which in this game right now has to be pretty damn feel good. I watched the end of two of his games where opponents were completely out of cards trying to figure out how to get their last remaining dice into Dooku to avoid the loss and couldnt (with damage showing no less!!!!)

Couple thoughts here:
For new players variety of cards and dice is way more important than making it a playset for competitive players. I think it's the right call. If it's 16 dice at that price point, and it had to be a playset, it'd be 8 character dice, and 8 uograde dice, and each deck would have two copies of two dice upgrades. Sounds way crappier out of the box.
Distribution wise dude Target has them, at least a couple cases worth per store so you shouldn't have to go far.
Also, Rend is an EAW card based on the spoilers, not a a starter card right? Maybe I am confused from discord last night, but pretty sure...

Legit can't believe how good they made his die in light of his ridiculous power. I actually don't like the power at all because talk about bogging the game down but I know competitive people like it. Sucks that you'll have no surprises for Thrawn because I love trap cards. I'll be all over the counterplay -- hope aggro is still good enough to hang even after it all gets nerfed.

on my 6th straight loss on TTS right now. fucking suuuucks. many have been very very close though, but 6 in a row is rough. definitely making some dumb as misplays that cost me a few games though. gotta get my shit together! heh
you "can" still sort of counter thrawn. Luke, Trust Your Instincts. Kenobi's Journal. Against Thrawn card draw may be more important than ever.
I do think they should have made it once per turn though. Stuff like Feint and Leadership makes him utterly abusive, on top of already knowing your hand every turn.
It is absolutely thematic.. but man... Thrawn is going to be a meta staple until he rotates out..
lol Rey.... her power is insane..... is definitely OP... but heroes are so bad that all her power does is makes them competitive.. not even broken lol.. and the decks that CAN be frustrating to play against (Han Rey, Luke Rey) are so swingy that is sucks to lose to them, but you have almost an even chance of running over them.
Ultimately she does need a nerf.. but man... heroes will then continue to be noncompetitive outside of a few archetypes. And if they nerf Maz... Maz Hera won't even be tier 2. It's like Rey and Maz are so OP... but they are literally the only things giving heroes Tier 2 decks... so what do you do?
edit - I'll say two more things.. out of 5 decks at NOVA, two were heroes.. and one had Maz, and one had Rey. Second, I REALLY think Lukas needs to step back and take a holistic look at heroes. I totally understand thematically where he is/was coming from. They are the good guys. The straight shooters. They win through brilliant use of underpowered odds and sheer guts. But there are two problems I see. First, most gamers don't want that. They want straight forward wambo combo card games. And because that's how FFG designed villains, it falls perfectly in line with what gamers want from a CCG. Second, it will ALWAYS make heroes swingy. With two points of entropy in the game (dice and card draw), by taking the tricks/combos away from heroes you leave them at more of the mercy of that entropy than villains. I don't know the answer... Maybe giving many of the same villain "tricks" but making the card text/names up as more "noble" is the answer?
yup i agree on heroes. even when you compare character-for-character they already suck, but when you combine them with the weak hero card pool it's not even close. I would have preferred they make Poe vehicles only but not touch the rest. i think point bump works too hopefully. i guess we have to see full card pool to see who's really OP but it's looking...interesting right now

definitely one of the better collectible games to come out in many years.. it's currently experiencing slight growing pains as they are expanding the card pool, but the third set just released today and is selling like crazy.

might be joining you after this. then just picking up a second legendary here and there as I feel like trying decks out. Especially if LG prices keep becoming more reasonable .AWK LG and early SOR prices were stupid.. Now it seems Ancient Lightsaber is the only nuts LG, and frankly it's a nuts card, so it's more understandable.
Picking up 3 boxes today.. may grab a 4th from CSI if I get around to it before they are OOS.
