Anyone here using the Samsung k8500?

Just wondering, how do you tell the thing to not upscale or mess with the picture in any way and just let the tv handle it?

The only picture option anywhere near that I can find is just resolution and obviously you'd leave it on auto if you switch between 1080/4k blu rays like I do.

I ask because with my tv, The TCL p605, it has FALD and when I let it do the upscaling while connected to my pc the FALD is a lot lot better vs when I have my a/v receiver do it.

I found this out because I was watching a movie through my computer on the tv and noticed the FALD didn't seem to be working right with a lot "bigger" halo's and things around objects that weren't being darkened by the FALD like it should be. I went into my a/v receiver and turned off all video processing and then the tv handled it and it was a LOT better when it came to the FALD working correctly and the blacks staying nice and dark.

The problem is I can't for the life of me find an option anywhere to tell the blu ray player "just send a signal to the receiver, don't upscale or mess with the picture."

Should be "Source Direct" or "Native" options in your BD player with the resolution output. On my KS8000 the TV also does a much better job upscaling than even my Oppo UHD player, so I have it set for Source Direct for disc playback. You should have that option on your BD/DVD player and your cable/sat DVR too, it might just be called something different depending on the manufacturer.

Nope, there's no "direct" source for video/picture, just resolutions and "auto."

I was bored and read the Blu-ray.com review recently, and they recommended just watching the regular Blu-ray instead of the 4K one. I think that's the first time I've ever seen that happen.

I don't trust the Blu-ray.com 4K reviews at all. They've never revealed what gear they're reviewing it on and they're almost always the outlier on negative 4K reviews.

E.T. looks stunning. Can't wait for Bridge on the River Kwai. Classic movies in 4K is amazing. There are so many I would instabuy.

I see...

Well, I looked at the reviews for it on AVSForum and High Def Digest, and they both said that the 4K version is noticeably better than the regular Blu-ray. Heh. So I guess if anyone wants to get that 4K DC Extended Universe collection, go for it.
First review of Wonder Woman 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and regular Blu-ray: http://www.avsforum.com/wonder-woman-ultra-hd-review/

Sounds like both are great.

Usually auto means it outputs in the resolution of the video being played. So it should output 1080p for a blu ray, and 2160p for a UHD disc. At least that is how I always read it.

I found it, apparently there is no direct and you have to instead select the resolution specifically for it not to upscale or downscale, so when you watch 4k you have to set it to 2160p and for 1080p blu rays you have to select 1080p.

On auto it'll output to the highest res (so 1080p is upscaled).

So auto might be "highest resolution the TV will take" or something then?
But glad you found the setting.

Damn, that's a good deal. I just watched Rise last night on 4K. It's okay looking. Nothing mind blowing. But, still a step up from normal Blu-ray, and a damn good movie.

I also didn't realize Reeves didn't direct this one until the credits roled. Crazy.

Is there a service out there that offers streaming 4k rentals?

I wanna check out The Mummy, but there's no way in hell I'm taking a chance with a blind buy.

Yeah I think Wyatt did a great job with Rise, but Reeves really took the series to a whole new level. Too bad the 4k isn't as great as it maybe could have been.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I just saw a UHD disc break the $5 barrier for the first time.
Salt was $4.99 at Fry's.

I would love to get one of these but will it play on all Blu-ray players? Never bought a Blu-ray from another country before.
4K is region free, and Western Asia (Hong Kong) is Region A for Blu-ray so both discs in that set will play fine on a US player.

I just watched 4K Blade Runner, and holy hell the warning/license legalese screens after the movie are pretty legendary. It just doesn't end.

Anyone here have a Sony 900e?

Been adjusting my settings while watching Okja/Peewee/Glow on netflix and found that the 'live color' setting pretty much needs to be on medium or high(I think I'll keep it at medium). On low or none the daytime scenes look like evening scenes. Well lit rooms look like closets etc. HDR brightness settings are already at max.

Weird for me to do since years of avsforum has thought me to turn off all extra processing options.

I have been spending the last week trying to calibrate the heck out of my TV. Never done this before, am just realizing now that my TVs have looked wrong forever.

Do we have a TV calibration thread? Trying to adjust to Warm 2 is killing me

Just a heads up, Best buy is having a $5 rewards on a few new 4k releases, decent for the 4k steelbooks if you get them (they tend to go up in value once they are release as bestbuy stop selling them usually).

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/promo/select-movies-evn43285

The Close Encounters/Starship Troopers keep going from available to "coming soon" but just check back and hopefully it'll show up.

Can't wait to see Starship Troopers in 4k, one of my favorite movies to rewatch next to Robocop/Fifth Element.

I have an 43X800D

live color pushes out SDR color boundaries into a WCG colorspace, essentially over saturating it.
In my testing, an equivalent result was achieved by bumping the color +3.

Hey, a question I've never asked (I've never actually seen a UHD disc in action) -

Do these discs maintain the longstanding tradition introduced by the DVD era of throwing an ungodly amount of pre-menu distractions (some skippable, some only fast-forwardable, some neither) before you can get to the part where you hit "play?"

I'd love a format that returns to the days of "FBI Warning" "Logo" "Watch the FUCKING MOVIE"

is this that format?

A lot of my UHD content hasn't been loaded up with trailers before getting to the main menu. I recall it being the same way in the early days of Blu-Ray until they became the mainstream format of choice.

I'm sure there are some out there that bulk up with trailers and other promos before the actual movie.

Ultimately the format isn't the issue it's the studios who put this shit on there.

This is not that format.

I've already run into more than one unskippable ad for something I already own.

Will they ever make 4K+3D discs?

Some recent 3D Blu Rays still look amazing, like Star Wars TFA. I would love to have the best of both worlds.

Lol nope

The only people who see fbi crawls and forced trailer junk are legitimate customers. Pirates trim that shit

Then the Best Buy Steelbooks are what you're looking for. The only ones I found having both.

Both as in a movie that's in 4K and has 3D, or just separate discs for both?

Is 4K+3D technically impossible? I'm wondering if it's like 3D videogames where the resolution is lower than 1080p in order to apply the 3D effect.

With the upcoming HDMI 2.1 version, it should have the bandwidth theoretically capable for such a thing. It's already been slated to do 8k at 120fps, so could be possible if the manufacturers wished to do so.

It seems my issue was that the 'custom' picture mode was just the wrong mode to use as a base. Just going to 'Cinema Home' made a dramatic difference in brightness with HDR content and I only needed to adjust a few settings.

The current UHD spec does not allow for 3D at all unfortunately

So apparently GotG 2 will now port to VUDU in 4K, as long as you redeem in on DMA.
It would originally just redeem the HDX version.

Disney Movies Anywhere. It’s disney’s backend that makes it so your Disney purchases get shared across iTunes, google play, Amazon, VUDU, their own app, and some others I’m sure I’m forgetting
Ah ok, cool. I seem to remember hearing some downsides about Disney's service? But if you can just redeem the 4K through Disney and then access it through Vudu then that sounds great.

I haven’t hit one yet, right now all my Disney movies are shared across my iTunes, VUDU, and Amazon accounts. I don’t think it shares 4K stuff yet though, since they blew off Apple with the whole regular pricing and free upgrades to 4K content on the iTunes store
